For these the author has little use, and has used them but little in his many wanderings. The author's theory has been that the wanderer, before his start, should absorb in his memory all the information possible of the countries he is about to visit, keep his mind open for local impressions, see with his own eyes and make his own judgments. All the following chapters were written on the spot, as the author moved from place to place, and while the local color was most vivid. His most abiding interest was in the human element: the ancient races of the Oriental home-land: and in the sharp contrasts in the social life of the East and West. He hopes that some of this interest may be transmuted into the minds of those who are kind enough to read the volume. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Japanese Letters: Eastern Impressions of Western Men and Manners, as Contained in the Correspondence of Tokiwara and Yashiri As a mere translator and editor of others' work, I might have permitted myself, without incurring the charge of fatuity or vanity, to say a few words in its praise, to touch on its points of utility, interest, humour or other excellence. I have not done soz for reasons which the intelligent reader will not find it difficult to guess, and with which the unintelligent reader need not be troubled. Matters which are merely of domestic interest to the writers of these letters, or which relate to their?reface. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Surgeon's Log: Being Impressions of the Far East IT is almost eighteen months since the impressions here recorded first were offered to the public; and re-reading them now, after the interval, I am conscious that for me the first glad joy of it is over, I can never again recapture the shimmering golden glamour of it all. Indeed, looking back through the grey mist of England, I find myself tempted, with the wisdom or folly of later remembrance, to revise, rewrite, tone down some of the pictures that now seem too polychromatic in the retrospect. But I have refrained, feeling that thereby any value they may possess as truth would be mirror dimmed by the breathings of the later mood - their individuality would thus be lost. Nevertheless, I have yielded to temptation to this extent: so' many have written asking What became of them afterwards? That I have added a postscript to the original narrative telling what they thought of it all, and how they liked being put into a book. Nothing had pleased me more than the numerous letters I have received from doctors - young men writing eagerly to know if I could find them such a ship in which they might have such experiences, older men enquiring furtively, apologetically, if their grey hairs could possibly be overlooked so that they too might find themselves amid similar surroundings. Apparently romance dies hard, and so to all I have replied that, given the proper subjective attitude of mind, their pleasure under similar circumstances would be as great - for it is in ourselves, not in the events that occur to us that happiness is to be found. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mirror of the East The color-prints with which we are now concerned constitute a special development or offshoot of painting proper. They are, strictly speaking, not paintings at all. But wood-engravings in color, or impressions taken on paper from a series of charged blocks of wood. The method of procedure was simple but exact ing. First the artist drew his picture on a sheet of thin paper, which was then pasted on a slab of cherry-wood and all but the out lines cut away by the knife of the engraver. From this key-block, a few copies of the outline were printed: and with the aid of these as guides, a series of wood-blocks was engraved, each one of the blocks bearing in relief only such parts of the whole picture as were to be given the same single color. Then, by carefully apply ing the various tints to the various blocks, and pressing these suc cessively in exact register on a sheet of paper, all the colors were brought together in their proper relative positions, and the color print resulted. The success of the process and the beauty of the final product depended upon three elements - the composition of the original design, the accuracy of the woodcutting, and the hand ling of the colors on the blocks. If crude colors were used. The print would be spoiled: and we often find that impressions taken from the identical blocks may differ enormously in beauty. One can get for a few cents poor copies of certain prints whose value in fine impressions might mount into hundreds of dollars. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From the Far East: Being Impressions of a Tour Around the World, by Way of England, India, China, and Japan During 1885-86 The letters in this volume were written in the course of a tour around the world, in 1885-6, and appeared in journals of the time. They are presented now in book form, in the hope that they may interest friends and fellow travellers. The only claim made for them is, that they give a plain narrative of the journey, and some details concerning the places of note which I visited. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religion of the East: With Impressions of Foreign Travel When it was determined, most unexpectedly to myself, that I should leave my pe0p1e and my home on a visit to the East, in company with my now deceased daughter, and my beloved friend Dr. Anderson, it was my earnest desire and prayer, that I might make the interval of my absence as profitable to myself and others as possible. With this view, I resolved to keep my mind open tojust impressions from all that I might see and hear in the lands I expected to visit. I wished to view the objects and scenes which might engage my attention, not merely with the eye of curiosity, or of one traveling for pleasure, but as a christian minister, that so I might turn the impressions I should receive, to the spiritual advantage of my beloved people, and the furtherance of the great objects of my ministry, I was greatly interested in my journey, - 1t could not be oth erwise - the aspect of the countries I visited, the people, lan guage, religion, manners and customs, were all so strange and so new. What was thus interesting to myself, I naturally con cluded would also be interesting to my friends at home, though presented only in brief statement and outline. In this view, I have occasionally, since my return, delivered discourses, chie y in the form of Sabbath evening lectures, designed to give my people some instructive idea of the scenes I passed through during the time I was absent from them. The discourses in this volume are a part of what I have attempted in this way. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From China and Some Eastern Sketches The aim of "Letters from China" is to convey an impression of life in the Far East as it appeared to an individual for whom the serious side of any subject has never possessed so powerful an attraction as has its humorous aspect. I offer this explanation in the hope that it may be regarded, by indulgent readers, as a plea in extenuation of the book's many faults. The stories are mainly incidents within the actual experience of the writer, who has attempted to portray them in their own Oriental colouring rather than by means of precisive literary expression. This suffering, which to my foreign eyes appeared perhaps more intense, is also giving anxiety to my dear friends the Turks themselves, and they would like to alleviate it. The remedy for this evil I do not claim to have discovered, since the greatest thinkers of the East are still diligently working to find it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Unchanging East I almost always judge a strange ship by its smoking-room; but this compartment on the Creole Prince bore a striking resemblance in size and accoutrements to a rather big, rather long, third class compartment on the south-eastern Railway. This was a disappointment to a man brought up on sumptuous Atlantic liners. There was a door at each end, and two seats along each side, with a pair of round metal tables in between them. I nearly deserted the ship when I saw this inadequate fumi gating chamber; but first impressions are never safe guides to follow, and before many days were past I came to look upon that smoking-room with an affection that did not seem possible at the beginning of the voyage. Get up! We're in sight of Pinang." It was about half-past six, and I rushed on deck as I was. This was what I had come 8000 miles to see, and every moment lost seemed wasted. It was twentyone days since we had touched solid ground, and my feet ached to be ashore again. The first impression was of a wonderful green: the land seemed smothered in vegetation. It rose precipitous from the water's edge, crag upon crag of naked rock jutting out grey amongst the green, with here and there the white outlines of verandahed bungalows, perched perilously on the heights, which, half hidden in the verdure, rose higher and higher, and culminated finally in one great peak 2700 feet above the sea. Passing Muka Head, a promontory on the extreme north-west end of the island, we swung round a red buoy for Georgetown, running between the island and the mainland. The deep blue of the Indian Ocean had ceased, and the water was a milky-white. The mainland, known as Province Wellesley, once part of the kingdom of Kedah, was a green belt of palm-trees, fringing a yellow strand, stretching back to the blue hills behind. All around us lay crazy-looking fishing praus, with batwing palm-leaf sails, brown and yellow, patched to the limit of patchiness, manned...

However, at the request of its author, whose acquaintance I had the good fortune to make when travelling in Roumania fourteen years ago, I willingly write a few sentences of Preface to this English translation. The French original (for Mr. Jonescu writes French with singular facility, clearness, and grace) has already found many readers, and this version deserves to win for it a still larger circle here and in America.
