Book Synopsis Britain, Detente and Changing East-West Relations by : Brian White
Download or read book Britain, Detente and Changing East-West Relations written by Brian White and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-06-01 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is little systematic analysis available of Britain's contribution to East-West relations since 1945, and in particular of Britain's contribution to East-West detente. In general, British attempts to act as mediator between East and West have been regarded as ineffectual, and a rather desperate attempt to prove that Britain could still wield influence on the world stage. In this new contribution to the study of the evolution of post-war international relations, Brian White argues that Britain's contribution to detente cannot so easily be dismissed. Through narrative and analysis, he examines the persistent theme of Britain's attempts to steer East-West relations in a co-operative direction. In doing so, he has provided both an important revaluation of Britain's role in the post-war world and an invaluable case study in foreign policy formation and execution.

Book Synopsis Technology Transfer and East-West Relations by : Mark Schaffer
Download or read book Technology Transfer and East-West Relations written by Mark Schaffer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-09 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1985, in the deteriorating climate of East-West relations technology transfer became vitally important. The Eastern bloc desperately needed Western technology to assist in the development of the socialist economies, but a proposed US ban on the export of Western technology to the Siberian pipeline project led to increasing tension within the Western alliance abot the nature and scale of high technology that could be safely exported to the East. This book reviews the state of technology transfer to the East in the 1980s and considers the place of Western technology in the Eastern economies. It also discusses the strategic goals of Western technology embargoes. Many of the issues discussed remain pertinent today.
Book Synopsis The Polish Crisis and Relations with Eastern Europe, 1979-1982 by : Isabelle Tombs
Download or read book The Polish Crisis and Relations with Eastern Europe, 1979-1982 written by Isabelle Tombs and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-03-16 with total page 527 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a collection of diplomatic documents describing Britain’s relations with Eastern Europe from 1979 to 1982, with special focus on the crisis in Poland. After coming to power in 1979, the Conservative Government of Margaret Thatcher reaffirmed a policy of ‘differentiation’ between the Soviet Union and the rest of Eastern Europe, and between individual countries; concurrently it encouraged states to exercise a limited amount of independence. This policy was soon put to the test when in 1980 Solidarność, the Solidarity trade union led by Lech Wałęsa, challenged the power of the Party state in Poland. Political demands, social unrest and economic crisis culminated in the imposition of martial law in December 1981, finally suspended in December 1982. The volume maps the UK response, in consultation with Western partners, to the unfolding crisis in Poland, the threat of Soviet intervention and the impact on other Communist states in Europe. The volume also provides a flavour of bilateral UK relations with Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, the German Democratic Republic, Hungary, Romania and Yugoslavia; highlighting themes such as human rights and trade. This volume will be of great interest to students of British Politics, Eastern European Politics, Cold War History, Diplomacy Studies and International Relations in general.

Book Synopsis Reconciliation Road by : Benedikt Schoenborn
Download or read book Reconciliation Road written by Benedikt Schoenborn and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2020-09-11 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among postwar political leaders, West German Chancellor Willy Brandt played one of the most significant roles in reconciling Germans with other Europeans and in creating the international framework that enabled peaceful reunification in 1990. Based on extensive archival research, this book provides a comprehensive analysis of Brandt’s Ostpolitik from its inception until the end of the Cold War through the lens of reconciliation. Here, Benedikt Schoenborn gives us a Brandt who passionately insisted on a gradual reduction of Cold War hostility and a lasting European peace, while remaining strategically and intellectually adaptable in a way that exemplified the ‘imaginativeness of history’.
Book Synopsis Arms Control and East-West Relations by : Philip Towle
Download or read book Arms Control and East-West Relations written by Philip Towle and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-01-26 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1983, examines the role that arms control has to play, alongside defence and deterrence, in stabilising East-West relations and reducing tensions during the Cold War. Arms control agreements were designed in the attempt to achieve parity between the nuclear forces of the superpowers, without making war more likely. A danger of confrontation between the USSR and the USA came from their involvement in Third World conflicts, and this arena is also discussed. The diplomatic approaches of the Soviet Union, the Third World and the West, and their aims in arms control, are also analysed.
