Download or read book A U.S. Foreign Policy for Asia written by Ramon Hawley Myers and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Raises serious questions about the effectiveness of current U.S. foreign policy in Asia. During the past three years, U.S. policies of giving top priority to Western Europe, relying on China to counterbalance the Soviet Union in Asia, rearming Japan and transferring modern weapons and economic aid to such states as Pakistan have not effectively dealt with threats of conflict. The foreign policy proposed focuses on the economic and political value of those key noncommunist nations encircling eastern and southern Asia and also India. The contributors agree that America needs a foreign policy that can counter Soviet expansionism and make recommendations toward this goal.

The nine papers were presented at a March 1991 conference in Monterey, California, and rewritten in 1992 to account for subsequent events. Paper edition (unseen), $17.50. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Updated papers and discussion summary of a RAND conference held in January 1979 to assess the major political, economic, and military trends likely to shape Asian regional security in the 1980s. Twelve chapters explore the impact of the Sino-Soviet rivalry on the region and the implication of indigenous developments associated with the dramatic economic growth and social transformation of East Asia. Specific issues include extension of the Sino-Soviet conflict to Indo-China; the Soviet military buildup in Asia; America's military presence and role in maintaining a force balance; Japan's new defense mood and future policy directions; the coming "crossover" in power relationships between North and South Korea; continuing rapid economic growth and its political consequences; the regional impact of China's economic modernization program; problems of arms transfers and nuclear proliferation; and the security implications of Asia's growing technological and industrial sophistication. An overview analysis suggests ten choices for a U.S. allied security strategy for the region which will determine the pattern of Asian security relationships in the coming decade. 305 pp. (JD)."--Rand abstracts.

This book was released on 1983 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This Note assesses the likely influence of the evolving strategic environment in East Asia on U.S.-Korean security relations in the remainder of the 1980s. To assess this influence, the Note briefly examines recent trends in several main factors: (1) the great power military balance, the Soviet military buildup in the Far East, and Soviet policies toward the Korean peninsula; (2) the vagaries of the Sino-Soviet split and U.S.-USSR-PRC triangular relations; (3) the character of the Japanese-American relationship and the nature of the role of Japan; and (4) the evolving political, economic, and military situations in both North and South Korea. The Note also examines the probable role of the United States in the region. On the basis of this examination, the Note fashions a number of propositions concerning the likely future evolution of the strategic environment in East Asia, assesses their implications for U.S.-Korean security relations, and suggests several policy issues for future consideration."--Rand Abstracts.

Book Synopsis Japan's China Policy by : Linus Hagström
Download or read book Japan's China Policy written by Linus Hagström and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-03-09 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Japan's China Policy understands Japan's foreign policy in terms of power - one of the most central concepts of political analysis. It contributes a fresh understanding to the subject by developing relational power as an analytical framework and by applying it to significant issues in Japan's China policy: the negotiations for a bilateral investment protection treaty and the disputed Pinnacle (Senkaku/Diaoyu) Islands. Hagström demonstrates that Japan exerted power over China in such divergent empirical settings for the most part by using civilian instruments positively, defensively and through non-action. Given that Japan's foreign policy is often portrayed rather enigmatically in terms of power, the unique contribution of Japan's China Policy is to demonstrate how to analyze power aspects of Japan's foreign policy in a more coherent fashion. This revealing approach to Japan's foreign policy will be of huge interest to anyone studying Japanese politics, foreign policy or international relations.
