Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is expected that with the exploration of outer space, a requirement for high data rate earth-to-space communication channels will arise. A program to investigate the feasibility of using the millimeter-wave region of the spectrum for this application is presented. The theory of atmospheric attenuation resulting from losses due to absorption, scattering and refraction processes is reviewed and used to estimate propagation losses produced by atmospheric gases, clouds and precipitation. Curves of total atmospheric attenuation and noise level as a function of meteorological parameters and antenna elevation angle are also presented. A series of experiments designed to obtain as much information as possible on the limitations imposed by the atmosphere on millimeter-wave propagation is considered. Although experiments using natural celestial bodies such as the sun, moon, planets and galaxies as radio sources are emphasized, those which would utilize aircraft, rockets and satellites are also mentioned. Finally, the characteristics of a recently installed precision 29-ft antenna designed to operate at 35 Gc (wavelength = 8.6 mm) with a traveling-wave maser as a preamplifier for the radiometer are outlined along with the specific experiments for which this antenna system will be used. Important advantages accruing from this use are larger bandwidths and narrower antenna beamwidths, which would reduce interference and ameliorate the frequency management problem while also improving covertness and resistance to jamming. However, millimeter waves are particularly susceptible to attenuation by rainfall. A new approach for designing around the rainfall problem is described and its benefits discussed. Outages caused by rainfall can be avoided by a variety of automatic switching schemes, by using techniques for increasing jam resistance, or by switching to a satellite in a different direction. The concept proposes switching only high-precedence traffic and only for the duration of the outage at the ground terminal. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Infrared and Millimeter Waves, Volume 9: Millimeter Components and Techniques, Part I compiles the work of several authors while focusing on certain aspects of infrared and millimeter waves, such as sources of radiation, instrumentation, and millimeter systems. This volume deals with millimeter components and techniques. Chapter 1 covers millimeter wave communications, and then the succeeding chapter discusses a comparative study of millimeter waves and transmission lines. This book then tackles dielectric waveguide electrooptic devices, as well as millimeter-wave propagation and remote sensing of the atmosphere, which are covered in Chapter 4. The fifth chapter presents the technology of large radio telescopes for millimeter and submillimeter. The next chapter explains a gyrotron study program, and the last chapter discusses multimode analysis of quasi-optical gyrotrons and gyroklystrons. This book will be of great use for researchers or professionals whose work involves infrared and millimeter waves.

Book excerpt: This completely revised and expanded edition of an Artech House classic Polarization in Electromagnetic Systems presents the principles of polarization as applied to electromagnetic systems. This edition emphasizes the concepts needed for functional aspects of systems calculations and device evaluation. Readers find up-to-date coverage of applications in wireless communications. The fundamentals of polarization are explained, including the principles of wave polarization along with their mathematical representations. This book explores polarized, partially polarized waves, and unpolarized waves. The second part of the book addresses applications of polarization to practical systems. Antenna polarization is covered in detail, including omnidirectional, directional, and broadband antennas with emphasis on antennas for generating linear and circular polarization for each antenna type. This book provides detailed coverage of wave interaction with an antenna and dual-polarized systems. Additional topics covered in this edition include propagation through depolarizing media, polarization in wireless communication systems, including polarization diversity and polarization measurements. This hands-on resource provides a clear exposition on the understanding of polarization principles and evaluation of the performance of electromagnetic systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The potential threat posed by Leonid meteroids to orbiting spacecraft over the next several years calls for new dynamic mitigation strategies to assist the satellite community in reducing the danger to its vehicles. This book offers deliberate dynamic mitigation strategies to complement the traditional shielding strategies, providing mission operators additional ways to decrease the danger. Five different attitude control and orbit maneuvering options are examined in detail. The information is presented in algorithmic form to allow technically competent, but meteoroid inexperienced, operators to easily understand the phenomena, assess the danger, and implement procedures. Although general in scope, the book emphasizes the Leonid meteor events of the 1998-2002 timeframe.
