The paper concludes with a set of recommendations for states interested in valuing students earning college credit while in high school in state accountability systems and provides concrete steps for ensuring that those policies serve all students.

Book excerpt: This quantitative study examined the impact of Advanced Placement (AP) and Dual Enrollment (DE) on early college academic performance by analyzing and comparing first year and sophomore year persistence rates and grade point averages (GPAs) of four student cohorts who began their education at a large urban research I university in fall 2007. These cohorts of fall 2007 first year and first time college admits comprise students who earned college credits in high school by participation in Credit Based Transition Programs (CBTPs), specifically AP and DE, and students who did not earn college credits during high school. This study has contributed to literature examining the relationship between earning college credits in high school and early college academic performance. CBTPs were created for the benefit of high school students and the K-16 educational system. These programs were specifically created and implemented to introduce students to the rigors of college and ease the academic and social transition from high school to college. Student AP and DE participation increases yearly (The Fifth Annual, 2009; Kleiner & Lewis, 2005) and the first year of college is pivotal in terms of student retention (Astin, 1984; Bailey & Karp, 2003; Bailey, Hughes, & Karp, 2002; Cohen & Brawer, 1996; Coomes & Debard, 2004; Klekotka, 2005; Kuh, 2005; Light, 2001; Pascarella & Terenzini, 2005; Plucker, Chien, & Zaman, 2006; Tinto, 1987). These are the two primary impetuses for studying this phenomenon. This study utilized multiple chi-square, Pearson correlation, multiple regression, oneway ANOVA, and ANCOVA statistical analyses. These analyses provided ample data for answering the research questions. The sample comprised four cohorts of first year, first time college, students entering a large urban research institution in fall 2007. 1) students entering with only Advanced Placement (AP) credits ("AP" cohort), 2) students entering with only Dual Enrollment (DE) credits ("DE" cohort), 3) students entering with both AP and DE credits ("AP and DE" cohort), and 4) students entering with no college credits ("Non AP and/or DE" cohort. Statistical analyses presented results showing no statistically significant difference in early college academic performance amongst the cohorts in the study.

First, college students should consider taking DSST and CLEP exams. These examinations are multiple choice and can be completed in less than a couple hours per exam. The DSST and CLEP exams cover a host of subject areas and there are no ramifications against your GPA if you were to not pass any of these examinations. The DSST and CLEP exams costs roughly $85 to take per exam which is less than 1/10th of the tuition cost of taking a college course. These examinations can allow you to attain 3 college credits per exam passed. You can also keep retaking these DSST and CLEP exams until you pass them. "There are 33 CLEP exams and 37 DSST exams available for students" (Sienkiewicz, 2019). By passing these exams, students can earn college credits without taking the various college course. These CLEP and DSST exams cover a broad range of subject areas, such as business, science, history, technology, economics, literature, mathematics, and humanities. This means that students who pass a copious amount of CLEP and DSST examinations can earn a exorbitant amount of college credits in a very short period of time and even finish a 4 year college program in half the time or less, 1-2 years instead of almost half a decade. "The idea behind CLEP and DSST exams is that students who already have extensive knowledge in a subject do not have to waste time re-learning material. So, choosing a subject or subjects that you are already familiar with will allow you to simply review the material and therefore prove to a college that you are already proficient in it and taking the class is not necessary" (Sienkiewicz, 2019). Second, prospective college students can make headway towards earning their college degree early by taking community college courses amid their teenage years and advanced placement (AP) courses as high school students. "AP tests are scored on a scale from 1-5. If your college offers AP credit, a score of a 4 or higher could allow you to earn 3 college credits per AP test passed without paying college tuition. Some students are able to skip the entire first year of college this way, thus cutting the entire cost of their college education by one quarter" (Franek, n.d.). In addition to take advance placement courses in high school, prospective college students also have the option to enroll in community college courses to earn additional college credits. High school students taking community college courses will not only be able to earn their degrees sooner than their peers, but will also have a much better sense of what a community college course entails since they will have amassed first-hand experience taking college courses before even enrolling in an undergraduate degree program. Third, students can take online college courses, on-ground college courses at night, weekend college courses, and can even complete college courses amid the summer semesters so that they can finish a couple years ahead of their peers by to maximizing their course load. They can also seek permission from the dean of their university in order to enroll in more college courses than is typically permitted as the maximum credit hour load. This can allow students to graduate from college years earlier than their peers. Graduate school programs also flexible course formats by allowing graduate students to enroll in online courses, weekend courses, or even night courses.
