The width of the State at its southern extremity is about forty miles, while the line of the northern end of the State, running from Connecticut River to Lake Champlain, is ninety miles long. The length of the State running the course of Connec ticut River, the western bank of which is the east ern boundary of the State, is about 215 miles. The northern line Of the State runs on a parallel Of 45 degrees north latitude, and was surveyed in 1772; the south line was surveyed in 1741. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Natural and Civil History of Vermont, Vol. 1 of 2 Three centuries have passed away since America was first discovered by Colume bus. From that time until now, the all'airs of America have engaged the attention of historians and philosophers. The natural productions of this continent, have been one object of general inquiry. Among the Spanish writers, there are some good essays on the natural history of the southern parts of America. In Canada, some of the physicians and Jesuits were attentive to the natural productions of that part of the continent and have left some valuable pieces on the natural history of New France. This kind of knowledge was not much attended to, by the first settlers of the British colonies and we' have but few of their ancient writings, in which it was contem plated at all. Obliged to depend upon transient and partial accounts, the best writer upon natural history, M. De Button, has fallen into many mis takes respecting the natural productions of A merica, which, more accurate observations would have corrected. The subject instead of being fully explored, is yet a treasure but little ex; amined. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early History of Vermont, Vol. 4 The unique place that Vermont held in the country in its early days, the difference in sentiment of her people and their clashing political interests caused them to be exceedingly watchful while several parties claimed her territory. When New Hampshire withdrew her claim to the Grants and protection of the people dwelling there, the Green Mountain Boys, the inhabitants of the Grants, declared themselves independent of all other earthly power or jurisdiction. This declaration seemed to whet the appetites of all the surrounding powers. New York redoubled her energy to subdue the people of the Grants; Massachusetts would absorb her; New Hampshire would resume her jurisdiction that she had so timidly surrendered to New York or would divide Vermont between her and New York, while the British attempted, by her army and persuasion, to retain her jurisdiction over this land. Vermont seemed to have no friends on either side, and relied on the strength and courage of her people to maintain the independent stand she had taken. To add to what would seem an overwhelming odds against Vermont, her own people were divided. For a time Tories were numerous and did what they could to prevent the people of Vermont maintaining their independence. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Eastern Vermont, From Its Earliest Settlement to the Close of the Eighteenth Century, Vol. 2: With a Biographical Chapter and Appendixes M8. Information against Yorkers. George Clinton Papers, in N. Y. State Lib. Vol. Ix. Doc. 2791. York to submit to the jurisdiction of the new state before the lst of June following. Alluding to the precario'usness of the situation of the Yorkers, he continued: Hitherto, sir, we have at the risque of our ears, and of receiving the infamous punishment of Whipping, sup ported the jurisdiction oi' the state in this county. But as we begin to believe that Congress-with whom the matter now solely rests - will not do anything effectual for our relief, we do not think it our duty any longer to put our all at stake. We would wish, sir - we are earnestly desirous, to live under the government of New York, but cannot longer risque so much for a government which is either unable or unwilling to protect us; and must candidly assure your Excellency, that unless Congress shall have settled this controversy by the let of June next, the subjects of New York in this county must, for their own safety, connect themselves with some power able to afford them secu rity. While thus stating the grievances to which the adherents of New York in Cumberland county had been subjected, Mr. Minott, in behalt' of his associates, assured the Governor that these unfortunate results had not been occasioned by any neglect on his part. We beg leave, wrote he, to express the wannest sentiments of gratitude to your Excellency, for your Conduct through the whole of our most distressed situation. We are truly sensible, sir, that you have done all in your power to relieve us, and that if Congress had the same tenderness for the calamities of their constituents which you have repeatedly shown to those underyour care, we should before this have been in a capacity of doing something to assist the continent in car rying on the war. Such were the accounts transmitted to Governor Clinton from Cumberland county. They were intended both for his instruction and the edification of the congressional delegation from New York. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Vermont, From Its First Settlement to the Present Time: With a Geographical Account of the Country, and a View of Its Original Inhabitants, for the Use of Schools Tan importance of early obtaining a correct knowledge of the History of our own country, and more especially of the events which have distinguished, and the fortunes which have attended the State to which we belong, is universally felt and acknowledged. It has long been a matter of regret, that the means Of se quiring this knowledge, with regard to Vermont, have been very imperfect. The fact, that no work of this kind adapt ed to the use of schools has been previously laid before the publick, will be a sufficient apology for the present publi cation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vermont in the Civil War, Vol. 2: A History of the Part Taken by the Vermont Soldiers and Sailors in the War for the Union, 1861-5 When volume I of this history was issued, the work of preparation of volume II was well advanced toward comple tion. But the effect of the publication of the first volume was to delay the publication of the second; for it awakened many of the Vermont veterans, seemingly for the first time, to the fact that a careful history of the Vermont troops was in preparation. As a consequence, documents, diaries, war letters and reminiscences, for which I had long been asking in vain, poured in upon me. Conflicting accounts of many important matters were received. Questions which I had considered settled were reopened and had to be inves tigated and decided anew. So much important additional material was thus received, that the manuscript for this volume had to be wholly rearranged and most of it rewritten. While this occasioned an amount of delay which can have been regretted by no one as much as by myself, it has cer tainly added enough to the interest and value, as well as to the size of the work, to compensate the subscribers for their waiting. When all was done, the bulk of the completed work proved to so largely exceed the limits of size upon which the contracts with the publishers and subscribers were based, that a third revision and extensive condensation of the work became imperative; and after all I have been obliged to omit some matters, including extracts from official reports and orders and a list of native Vermonters who served in other than Vermont organizations, which I had planned to include in an appendix to this volume. If there should seem to be a demand for these, they may possibly be published at some future day in a supplementary volume. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Baptists in Vermont, Vol. 2 "Other men labored and ye are entered into their labors." The importance of preserving material for a history of Vermont Baptists was recognized by a few persons at an early date. In the minutes of The Shaftsbury Association of 1794, is this note: "N. B. It is the request of some of the members of this Association, that the several Associations with whom we correspond would print their annual minutes in sizable octavo. By this we judge a valuable end might be answered; by being all of one size they might easily be reduced to a volume, without any expense; being ranged in order from year to year, and bound together, they will naturally be preserved. The various circular letters they contain will be richly worthy of perusal and preservation; they will contain a body of divinity, in a familiar style of letter writing. This method followed a few years will produce at once a more extensive history, and accurate register of the Baptists in America, than any other. It will at least contain particular and extensive information, for rising generations, without any expense but merely the care of preserving. To this end an octavo size will be best." Unfortunately this suggestion as to uniformity of size was not heeded, but the prediction concerning the value of the minutes as sources of history was correct, and much credit is due those who preserved the minutes and to others who have collected the files now available for reference in our Historical Societies. For many years, however, a vast amount of history was in the archives of the people's memory, and much has been lost, for lack of a timely historian. In 1841, the State Convention took definite steps to secure a history of Vermont Baptists. Brethren A. Churchill, D. Haskall and M. Field were appointed a committee for this purpose. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Vermont With Descriptions, Physical and Topographical The Rev. Hosea Beckley, for many years a distinguished clergyman of this state, was the author of the following work, which he had nearly prepared for the press, some two years since, and had obtained a large list of subscribers for the book, when he was suddenly arrested by death - leaving no other patrimony to his bereaved family but this work in manuscript, upon which he had bestowed years of labor, and which is now published for the benefit of his widow. The work is given entire as it was left by Mr. Beckley, the publisher not deeming himself authorized to alter the manuscript from the condition in which it was left by the author. The only thing done, except copying for the press, has been in one or two instances, to bring the narrative down to the close of the last year; and to arrange the chapters in the order, in which the subjects treated of in them seemed to require, as they were left by Mr. Beckley, owing probably to his sudden demise, without being numbered, or placed in their proper order.
