Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early History of Blackwood's Magazine To understand what Blackwood's magazine did for the Magazine literature of Scotland, it is necessary to glance at the Magazines of 18th Century Scotland. Scotland had been fairly well supplied with periodicals of every de scription in the leth Century. The Edinburgh Courant, founded in 1705, continued until 1886; The Caledonian Mercury 1720; The Mercury 1674-1757. These magazines were of little importance and the first really noteworthy periodical was the Scots' Magazine established in 1739, and taken over by Constable in 1800. This magazine was a monthly publication and its contents consisted chiefly of book reviews. It continued until Constable's failure in 1826. The weekly Magazine or edinburgh.amusement (1768-1784) had a very wide circulation, due probably to the varied character of its contents. Neither of the last mentioned magazines held a critical attitude toward litera ture. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Blackwood's Magazine, Vol. 193: January-June 1913 There was general merriment at this, for Mr Carmyle was patriarchal, both in appearance and habits. But it did nothing to soothe the nerves of The Freak himself, who happened at the moment to be standing shyly upon one leg outside the door, endeavouring to summon up sufficient courage to walk in. He was a small sandy-haired boy with shrewd blue eyes and a most disarming smile, and he belonged to a not uncommon and distinctly unlucky class. There are boys who are shy and who look shy. Such are usually left to themselves, and gradually attain to confidence. There are boys who are bumpti ous and behave bumptiously. Such are usually put through a brief disciplinary course by their friends, and ultimately achieve respectability. And there are boys who are shy, but who, through sheer self consciousness and a desire to conceal their shyness, behave bumptiously. The way of such is hard. Public school discip linary methods do not discrim inate between the sheep and the goats. Variations from the normal, whether voluntary or involuntary, are all corrected by the same methods. Un conventionality of every kind is rebuked by stern moralists who have been through the mill themselves, and are con vinced that it would be ungenerous to deprive the succeeding generation of the benefits which have produced such brilliant results in their own case. At its rear end was the boiler; in front, supported by long arms, which overhung the end Of the bridge by some distance, was the gaunt framework and guide, almost hugging the pile which the monkey above was maltreating. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Blackwood's Magazine, Vol. 191: January-June, 1912 Mrs Berwick felt that the tone had meaning in it, and said quickly, I know, I'd help you if I could, but everything's so difficult. Her voice was a fighting one, though it was soft and human. The battle of life had told on both sisters. On Mrs Rigg outwardly: it accounted for her makeshift clothes, her scanty, badly done hair, the lines on her face, her thin throat and nervous hands; obviously she was poor, and tried hard not to be envious of her more presentable sister. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Blackwood's Magazine, Vol. 212: July-December, 1922 The first of these, the Deme rara, has given its name to the yellow -crysta1 sugar which at present is British Guiana' s chief title to fame; and, indeed, the colony is more often than not spoken of simply by the name of this one river, at the mouth of which lies Georgetown with its inhabitants, a medley of many immigrant races. The Demerara, as it slips lazily into the Atlantic, affords a beautiful river harbour to Georgetown; its broad smooth stream, lead ing away inland almost due south, is navigable by ocean going ships for sixty miles. White sails of sloops, schooners, and fishing-boats shine against the blue-grey glimmer of the opaque water or the vivid green of the low fiat banks, a scene of peace which no Caribbean hurricane ever threatens. But there is a wicked fairy who neutralises all British Guiana's heaven sent gifts. Currents sweeping along the coast wash seas of mud into the Demerara with each tide, and have laid a bar to seaward, which denies all steamers of deep draught access to what should be one of the best and safest harbours of South America. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Blackwood's Magazine, Vol. 194: July-December, 1913 No light was in the glen except from the house he quitted, where some windows, looked back on from a little distance when he reached the garden foot, appeared as yellow squares stuck high up on the arch of night. One of them he knew to be the window of Drimdorran's closet, none of them was Margaret's. He felt that the best thing he could do would be to walk into the town and wait for an explana tion of the truancy until the morrow's morning, but at three-and-twenty years of age it is always something else than the best in policy that commands our acts, and feneas, with one hand feel ing at his chin and the other at times thrust out before him till he had come to his second eyes, passed through the fringe of shrubbery about the garden limits, and out across the fields to the river-side. By the time he reached it he had got a little of the howlet's vision, and the dovecote and its scraggy thicket were to be perceived as bodies massive, blacker than the night. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Blackwood's Magazine, Vol. 203: January-June 1918 Climbing the low forest-clad bluff, which commanded the northern approach thereto, the Brigade at last set eyes on the river concerning which it had speculated so much during the latter phases of the campaign. Save for its unexpected width, it presented no unusual fea tures: a swift yellow ood, close on half a mile across, confined by sandy shores, where the heart -breaking thorn-bush of the interior at length ceased, and broken at intervals by reed covered islands. Beyond the far bank stretched a wide expanse of elephant-grass, and thence to the horizon a waste of dry. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine, Vol. 88: July-December, 1860 IT is long before we arrive at the secret causes of events, the hidden motives of the actors in them. The events themselves are patent to all their form, their shape, their result, we all can from the first appreciate. Brilliant and accurate descriptions of them we can gather from cotemporary records, but these relate to the outward seeming alone. It is long years afterwards, when the generation who witnessed them have sunk into the tomb, and the men who acted in them have journeyed hence, that we first obtain a glim se behind the curtain, and acquire a nowledge of the real objects pursued, and the true springs of action. Thus it is that on man points connected both with the dip omatic history and.the military events of the first French Empire, we are only now beginning to have revealed to us the secret causes, and to see in their just char acter the men who carried them on. The sanitary arrange ments were beyond words. Next morning we set to work cleaning up, but it was weeks before the place was habitable. Every body suspected every person met, whom he or she did not happen to know personally. Schoolboys were egged on to assist in the work of denunei ation. Many ludicrous scenes occurred when two ardent patriots proceeded to arrest one another simultaneously. There is a fine opportunity for a play wright to utilise them. But sad tragedies were not less frequent. A manufacturer's only daughter was shot dead by lads who had taken upon themselves the duty of stop ping all motor-cars on a high road, without official sanc tion to do anything of the kind. How many Russian farm labourers or travellers were seriously injured by mobs or fusiladed by the military after most perfunctory court martials nobody will ever know. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Blackwood's Magazine, Vol. 192: July-December, 1912 History has shown that in taking this step Edwardes was not alienating the respect of the Pathans. A few years after these words were spoken the Indian Mutiny broke out. The Punjab saved India. Peshawar was the key to the Punjab. Edwardes at Pesha war held n.w. India for the Empire, and the Pathans were true to him. So Christian Missions were established on the Frontier. Gradually it has come to be recognised that healing of the body is the surest way to win the trust of the Pathan, and a chain of medical mis sions has been established all along the Afghan frontier. Bannu was one of the last so to be established, and it was to Pennell that the task was confided. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
