Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early German Hymnology of Pennsylvania German, in the "Deutsche Pionier," a series of articles on "German-American Bibliography" which throw much light on this obscure subject; but these articles are now out of print and very difficult to obtain. Some information may, of course, be gleaned from the Prefaces of German hymn-books and the writings of foreign hymnologists, but the subject still demands original investigation. At present we can hardly hope to do more than to give an account of the various German hymn-books which were printed in this country during the last century. These were, in many instances, hardly more than reprints of books which the early settlers had brought with them from the fatherland, with occasional original hymns inserted here and there without any indication of authorship. Under these circumstances our subject can hardly be exhaustively treated, but we can, at any rate, indicate the direction of future studies. The numerous articles which have recently been written concerning the hymnology of the English churches of America would seem to suggest that something should be done, however imperfectly, in behalf of the Germans. In common speech, the Germans of Pennsylvania are said to be ecclesiastically divided into two great classes: "Church - People" (Kirchen-Leute) and "Sect-People" (Sekten-Leute). This distinction, though in some respects objectionable, is older than the settlement of the State. It was brought over from the fatherland, where there could be no question with regard to its meaning. The "Church-People" were, of course, those who maintained their allegiance to the established churches: Lutheran and Reformed. The Roman Catholics might also, from this point of view, have been termed "church-people," but in America they were so few in numbers and so thoroughly isolated, that they were generally known only by their proper name. The term "Sect-People" was not employed, in earlier times, by way of reproach. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from German-American Hymnology, 1683-1800: A Dissertation Submitted to the Philosophical Faculty of Johns Hopkins University for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy That the German element in Pennsylvania history has not been brought out in its due proportion is too apparent to need any proof. Of this, perhaps, we ought not to complain. Whether it is a fault arising from tardiness, or a virtue springing from a retired modesty, or something of both, it is nevertheless true, that the Germans are devotedly willing to bear the timber and build the scaffolding, so that others may erect their temples of honor, and then as patiently submit to being cast aside because needed no more. But whether they are to have credit for the good, or blame for the evil, which from them has been infused into our Pennsylvania nationality, the fact that German life is the moulding power in the life of our State will be seen in its spirit for ages to come. The phrase 'german Pennsyl vania' is traditionally abroad, and will last as long as the phrase Yankee New England. This proverb, like the fabled wandering Jew, will travel the earth as a testimony, whatever historians may write in books. Book excerpt: Once a vibrant part of religious life for many Pennsylvania Germans in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Fraktur manuscripts today are primarily studied for their decorative qualities. The Word in the Wilderness takes a different view, probing these documents for what they tell us about the lived religious experiences of the Protestant communities that made and used them and opening avenues for reinterpretation of this well-known, if little understood, set of cultural artifacts. The resplendent illuminated religious manuscripts commonly known as Fraktur have captivated collectors and scholars for generations. Yet fundamental questions about their cultural origins, purpose, and historical significance remain. Alexander Lawrence Ames addresses these by placing Fraktur manuscripts within a “Pietist paradigm,” grounded in an understanding of how their makers viewed “the Word,” or scripture. His analysis combines a sweeping overview of Protestant Christian religious movements in Europe and early America with close analysis of key Pennsylvania devotional manuscripts, revealing novel insights into the religious utility of calligraphy, manuscript illumination, and devotional reading as Protestant spiritual enterprises. Situating the manuscripts in the context of transatlantic religious history, early American spirituality, material culture studies, and the history of book and manuscript production, Ames challenges long-held approaches to Pennsylvania German studies and urges scholars to engage with these texts and with their makers and users on their own terms. Featuring dozens of illustrations, this lively, engaging book will appeal to Fraktur scholars and enthusiasts, historians of early America, and anyone interested in the material culture and spiritual practices of the German-speaking residents of Pennsylvania.

Book excerpt: Through innovative interdisciplinary methodologies and fresh avenues of inquiry, the nine essays collected in A Peculiar Mixture endeavor to transform how we understand the bewildering multiplicity and complexity that characterized the experience of German-speaking people in the middle colonies. They explore how the various cultural expressions of German speakers helped them bridge regional, religious, and denominational divides and eventually find a way to partake in America’s emerging national identity. Instead of thinking about early American culture and literature as evolving continuously as a singular entity, the contributions to this volume conceive of it as an ever-shifting and tangled “web of contact zones.” They present a society with a plurality of different native and colonial cultures interacting not only with one another but also with cultures and traditions from outside the colonies, in a “peculiar mixture” of Old World practices and New World influences. Aside from the editors, the contributors are Rosalind J. Beiler, Patrick M. Erben, Cynthia G. Falk, Marie Basile McDaniel, Philip Otterness, Liam Riordan, Matthias Schönhofer, and Marianne S. Wokeck.

Book excerpt: This cultural exploration offers an unparalleled presentation of Pennsylvania’s ritual healing traditions known as powwowing or Braucherei in Pennsylvania Dutch, through original primary source materials, including manuscripts, ritual objects, and books—most of which have never before been available to English-speaking readers. Although methods and procedures have varied considerably over three centuries of ritual practice within the Pennsylvania Dutch cultural region, the outcomes and experiences surrounding this tradition have woven a rich tapestry of cultural narratives that highlight the integration of ritual into all aspects of life, as well as provide insight into the challenges, conflicts, growth, and development of a distinct Pennsylvania Dutch folk culture. Volume IV of the Annual Publication Series of the Pennsylvania German Cultural Heritage Center at Kutztown University of Pennsylvania.
