Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Experiences of Life in South Australia: And an Extended Colonial History The following work has already been published in parts in the columns of the South Australian Chronicle, and has been read with very great interest by persons of all classes. The chapters are now rearranged, so that those relating to each special subject or class of subjects appear in their more natural order. The author's aim has been to relate striking incidents coming generally under his own observation in the early days of the province; to describe the struggles of the pioneer settlers, the misfortunes and disasters against which they contended, and the scenes in which they were actors. He has endeavoured to picture South Australia as it was in 1836, and for the next six or seven years, and to do justice to the achievements and character of some men whose merits have not perhaps been at all times sufficiently appreciated. Many of the adventures Mr. Bull describes have a great element of romance about them, and his bush yarns and the chapters on the encounters of the police and settlers with the blacks and bushrangers cannot fail to be exciting and attractive reading. Respecting the views he holds upon some public questions, and concerning the policy of our rulers in the days long gone by, there may be differences of opinion, but there can be no doubt as to the value of this work as an accurate record of events. Its style is not ambitious, but the writer tells his story in an easy, agreeable way. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Dr William Wyatt emigrated to the new colony of South Australia in 1837. He became a notable pioneer and briefly held government positions including coroner and protector of Aborigines, but his major interests and influence were in the fields of cultural development, medicine and education. KEEPING A TRUST tells the story of the life of William Wyatt, and how when he approached the end of his days without an heir, he arranged to place his assets into a trust and instructed that it be used for South Australians experiencing poverty. The Wyatt Benevolent Institution was formed and since then has grown to become one of Australias leading philanthropic institutions.

Book excerpt: This book explores the nature and extent of violence on South Australia's frontiers in light of the foundational promise to provide Aboriginal people with the protection of the law, and the resonances of that in social memory. What do we find when we compare the history of the frontier with the patterns of how it is remembered and forgotten?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this lively, provocative collection, some of Australia's leading historians - and a Miles Franklin shortlisted historical novelist - challenge established myths, narratives and 'beautiful lies' about South Australia's past. Some are unmasked as false stories that mask brutal realities, like colonial violence - while others are revealed as simplistic versions of more complex truths. 'Each generation writes history that speaks to its own interests and concerns,' write historians Paul Ashton and Anna Clark. In Foundational Fictions in South Australian History, which grew out of a series of public lectures at the University of Adelaide, an impressive range of contributors suggest different ways in which familiar narratives of South Australia can be interpreted. These essays tap into wider debates, too, about the nature and purpose of history - and the 'history wars' first flamed by John Howard. Stuart Macintyre highlights South Australia's central role in several national events. Humphrey McQueen questions the origins and influence of the money behind South Australia's so-called progressive founding. Lucy Treloar suggests historians can learn from novelists when it comes to understanding the past. Steven Anderson argues that Don Dunstan's achievement in abolishing capital punishment owed much to a historical movement. And Carolyn Collins highlights the role of anti-conscription group Save Our Sons (SOS) in not just ending the Vietnam War, but broadening the appeal of the anti-war movement.
