Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of Early Illinois and Her Noted Men: Read Before the Chicago Historical Society, March 16, 1880 While cultivating these narrow strips of land the men would be in close proximity to each other, ready at a moment's notice to assemble for mutual protection or assistance. This arrangement gave the French people, likewise, an opportunity to gratify their strong social tastes and feelings. On the other hand, there is nothing gregarious or social in the disposition of the American pioneer. He takes his family out into the wilds, and squats down wherever he finds water, timber, and game abundant. He builds a cabin, breaks up a few acres of ground, which he puts in corn, keeping in mind all the time that he is as far away from neighbors as is consistent with safety from Indians. He claims the whole country as belonging to him and his class. He has not the slightest conception of the rights of the aboriginal inhabitants. He regards it as his mission to drive them off, or what is preferable, to exterminate them. The minds of these men seem to have been so peculiarly constructed or perverted as to render it impossible for them to comprehend the fact that Indians have rights. They are Me manifest destiny - men par excellence. The time in which they are not occupied in the corn-patch is spent in the deepest forest solitudes, their only companions their dog and gun. Day in and day out, he creeps stealthily through the woods watching for game be it a buck or an Indian, the instant he perceives it his 'unerring ri e lays it dead at his feet. The savages in his front, and the wave of population coming after, equally annoy him. It is said that if your genuine pioneer hears his neighbor's chickens crow, he is off into the more profound depths of the wilderness, and gives up his cabin and his clearing, and goes off muttering his curses against the Indians and the Yankees. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Bench and Bar of Illinois Some years ago when in social conversation with two gentlemen of the Bar, I was relating some professional incidents which had occurred many years before, when one of them suggested that it would be interesting to the profession of the present day if I would note down, events which had occurred in the early times and lay them before the public; I promised to do so, and the result was a series of articles published in the Chicago Legal News. Upon their publication I received many letters from gentlemen of the Bar in various parts of the State, expressing the hope that the articles might be republished in book form. I finally revised these articles and prepared them for the press, with several new papers which have not been previously published, and placed them in the hands of the printer, thinking that many incidents and some peculiarities of former times might be thus perpetuated, which may in still later times be considered worth remembering. I do this the more readily as I am probably the only man now living who can speak from personal observations and recollections of events of fifty years and more ago. In the Appendix I have given an address delivered before the State Bar Association on the 24th of January last, and another given before the Chicago Bar Association February 11, 1893, in which will be found some statements germane to the subject, not previously given. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of Early Illinois and Her Noted Men: Read Before the Chicago Historical Society, March 16th, 1880 The French maintained amicable relations with the Indians, while no Indians were permitted to live in the neighborhood of these Americans. The Frenchman had more humanity, greater sense of justice, and stronger social feeling, than the American; but he was not so self-reliant. He had either lost his individu ality, or never had any, whilst that of the American became over weening; and to the lack of this quality may be attributed the comparative incapacity of the French for successful colonization. While, on the other hand, the Americans thrive and grow beyond anything the world has ever known. They swallow up and assim ilate everything that comes within the sphere of their in uence. Anybody but the Indian and the Chinese may come in, but he must Americanize; that is, things must go on American fash ion. Our laws, our language, and our institutions must prevail. We will not tolerate any class within our sphere who is not 0 us in all these respects. Those who try to adopt our customs, learn our language, and profess to reverence our Constitution and form of Government, and become naturalized, we receive with open arms; but woe betide the luckless Wight who wears a pig-tail' and blouse, and professes to take no interest in our Government, and arranges to have his bones transferred to the land of his birth for burial. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early-Chicago Reminiscences We left Buffalo, August 26, for a goo-mile journey by land for Chicago, and traveled a couple of hundred miles along the shore of Lake Erie through Pennsylvania and Ohio. Instead of finding it a wilderness as we expected, we found a beautiful farming coun try, well settled by thriving farmers, good farm-houses, and fruit in abundance, and until we reached Cleveland, then a town of about 3000 inhabitants, first-rate macadamized roads. We hoped to find plenty of game, but were not quite so foolish as a young Englishman who was visiting at my house a few years since, who asked the morning after his arrival if he could walk out a few miles and get a shot at a buffalo, but did expect we might shoot a deer now and then; but, with the exception of two or three that crossed the road a few miles from Cleveland, and once again in Michigan, we saw none, and with small game it was about the same. We had two or three hours good duck-shooting on the Sandusky River, and once in a while shot a stray pigeon along our route, but that was all until we arrived at White Pigeon, when we ame across a flock of prairie-chickens and bagged a few of them, and once again at Door Prairie, about ten miles from Michi gan City, where we shot a couple, but with these few exceptions we saw no game in our two months' traveling. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of the Early Bench and Bar of Illinois It is perfectly natural, at least it has always been, from the dawn of creation, and will doubtless be (as Governor Reynolds used to say, "till eternity in the afternoon") the case that people will reverence the past and desire to be fully posted as to the men and the events of by-gone periods; and this is particularly the case in reference to what are called the "transition periods" in the history of a people. Illinois has, within the last forty years, been passing through that period. Forty years ago she had not to exceed 140,000 inhabitants, and not a mile of railroad; now she has a population of at least 3,000,000, and more miles of railroad than any other State in the Union. She produces more of the means of subsistence than any territory of equal extent in America. In 1838, she was in debt more than $18,000,000. She has paid, to the uttermost farthing, that debt, principal and interest, with the exception of a small sum - not yet due - but which she could this day discharge without occasioning the slightest embarrassment. She is in receipt from the Illinois Central railroad of an annual stipend, varying between half and three-quarters of a million of dollars - enough almost to run the State government. She has cut no mean or inconsiderable figure in the political history of the country. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
