Book excerpt: "For several decades to come, surface mining will continue to play a major role as the main source of much of the world's mineral wealth. Billions of tons of metallic ores, fertilizers, and associated waste products are mined from surface deposits each year around the world. This handbook was organized to provide the reader engaged in the search, design, and operation of such surface mines, with current, useful information of practical application. The articles were gleaned and edited from recent issues of Engineering and Mining Journal."--Foreword.

Book excerpt: Mineral Processing: Beneficiation Operations and Process Optimization through Modeling is written for both individuals working in industry as well as students. Processing techniques for the recovery or extraction of a particular mineral are largely dictated by the physical, chemical, and mineral characteristics of that particular mineral. The design of the process flow sheet and the configuration of the circuit can vary from situation to situation, as well, and this book guides readers in formulating those flow sheets for various minerals in order to assist in selecting the right equipment for the process. The book serves as a guide to mineral processing plant engineers for flow sheet development of various minerals, including coal and steel plant waste. It additionally includes alternative flow sheets and process routes for plant design. Outlines numerical modeling techniques employed for understanding processes Discusses optimization of processing techniques Covers various concepts and issues related to recovery or extraction of a particular mineral from its ore Provides guidance for greenfield projects with insight into choosing the correct circuit configuration for treating ores, given the grade and availability

Book excerpt: Mineral Processing Design and Operations: An Introduction, Second Edition, helps further understanding of the various methods commonly used in mineral beneficiation and concentration processes. Application of theory to practice is explained at each stage, helping operators understand associated implications in each unit process. Covers the theory and formulae for unit capacities and power requirements to help the designer develop the necessary equipment and flow-sheets to economically attain maximum yield and grade. This second edition describes theories and practices of design and operation of apparatus and equipment, including an additional chapter on magnetic, electrostatic, and conductivity modes of mineral separation. Basics of process controls for efficient and economic modes of separation are introduced. Outlines the theory and practice in the design of flow sheets and operation of an integrated mineral processing plant Introduces the basic magnetism, electrostatic, conductivity, and dielectrophoresis properties of minerals and related separation techniques Describes automation in mineral processing plants allowing maximum yields and consistent high concentrate grades Outlines problems and offers solutions in the form of various examples

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to the increasingly complex mineralogy, and lower grade of many current ore reserves, technology has, over the past decade, had to evolve rapidly to treat these materials economically in an industry which has undergone severe periods of recession. However, most of the technical innovations, such as the increasing use of solvent-extraction, ion-exchange etc., have been in the field of chemical ore processing, and, apart from the use of computers and ever larger unit process machines, there have been few major evolutionary changes in the field of physical mineral processing, where conventional crushing and grinding methods, essentially unchanged in half a century, are followed by the 'old-faithfuls'- flotation, gravity, magnetic and electrostatic methods of separation. Many of these techniques have major limitations in the treatment of 'new' ores such as complex sulphides, and the main purpose of the NATO Advanced study Institute (ASI) "Mineral Processing at a Crossroads" was to review the future of mineral processing. One of the great failings of physical methods is their inability to treat ultra-fine particles, and much research effort is required in this area. Flotation is still the most widely used and researched method for separating minerals, and is the only method which can be used to produce separate concentrates from complex sulphide ores. However, its performance on these 'modern' ores is poor, and it is in this area particularly that chemical methods will increasingly be integrated into plant circuits.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Run-of-mine ore processing is a method of added value in which undesirable gangue-bearing minerals are discarded to obtain the desired minerals. Mineral processing has tangible benefits including savings in freight and handling, and the recovery of metal values from the slag as well as intangible benefits such as mineral conservation, environment protection by filling the mine using gangue-bearing minerals, and energy saving. This book provides rudimental, theoretical and operational knowledge of mineral processing along with coal characterisation and processing of ores of metallic and industrial minerals. It also explains definitions and techniques, along with basic formulas and practical examples. This book is designed for professionals in geology, mining, mineral, metallurgical and chemical engineering. The eccentric feature of this book is the introduction of simple numerical calculations for evaluation of the processes which in turn help understand the concepts with enhanced clarity and handle day-to-day operations of mineral processing plants. Therefore, it can be used both as a simple reference guide and a concise course in mineral processing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. R. Peter King covers the field of quantitative modeling of mineral processing equipment and the use of these models to simulate the actual behavior of ore dressing and coal washing as they are configured to work in industrial practice. The material is presented in a pedagogical style that is particularly suitable for readers who wish to learn the wide variety of modeling methods that have evolved in this field. The models vary widely from one unit type to another. As a result each model is described in some detail. Wherever possible model structure is related to the underlying physical processes that govern the behaviour of particulate material in the processing equipment. Predictive models are emphasised throughout so that, when combined, they can be used to simulate the operation of complex mineral processing flowsheets. The development of successful simulation techniques is a major objective of the work that is covered in the text. - Covers all aspects of modeling and simulation - Provides all necessary tools to put the theory into practice
