The present volume contains the text of lectures and abstracts of posters presented during the meeting. This conference is part of a series of scientific multidisciplinary meetings in which chemistry is involved at various levels. Amongst the most recent ones let us mention Aachen 1979, Bielefeld 1979, New York 1979, Elmau 1981. In addition, this meeting is a direct extension of the first one that took place in Bordeaux in 1978 on the topic "Far from equilibrium: instabilities and structures," at the conclusions of which we could write (cf. Far fram Equilibrium, Springer Series in Synergetics, Vol. 3): "The three key words, far fram equilibriUm, instabilities and structuPes, best illustrate the new concepts which emerge from the description of the dynamics of various systems relevant to many different research areas. " The present proceedings show how much these remarks have remained true, even though substantial progress has been achieved during the three last years. To get a ,deeper experimental knowledge of open reacting systems, to model and simulate reaction-diffusion systems, to develop the mathematical theory of dynamical sys tems, these are the main direction~ in current investigations.

It will be divided into three volumes and will contain the contributions to an international seminar organized by the editors. The first one, is concerned with the fundamental problems which occur when studying a gas phase reaction or a reaction for which the solvent effect is not taken into account. The two first papers show how the collision theory can be used to predict the behaviour of interacting small molecules. For large molecules the complete calculations are not possible. We can only estimate the reaction path by calculating important areas of the potential surfaces. Four papers are concerned with this important pro cess. Furthermore, in one of these, the electronic reorganization which occurs along the reaction path is carefully analyzed. ~~o papers are devoted to the discussion of general rules as aromaticity rules, symmetry rules. The last two papers are concerned with the electrostatic molecular poten tial method which is the modern way of using static indices to establish relations between structure and chemical reactivity. Volume II will be devoted to a detailed analysis of the role of the solvent and volume III will present important applications as reaction mechanisms, photochemistry, catalysis, biochemical reactions and drug design. The book and associated papers translated here revolve around his concomitant philosophical and historical interests in chemistry-topics largely uncovered by Duhem's writings hitherto available in English. He understood contemporary concerns of chemists to be a development of the ancient dispute over the nature of mixture. Having developed his historical account from distinctions drawn from the atomists and Aristotelians of antiquity, he places his own views of chemical combination squarely within the Aristotelian tradition. Apart from illuminating Duhem's own work, it is of interest to see how the ancient dispute can be related to modern science by someone competent to make such comparisons. The book is lucid and logically stringent without assuming any particular mathematical prerequisites, and provides a masterly statement of an important line of nineteenth century thought which is of interest in its own right as well as providing insight into Duhem's broader philosophical views.
