Book excerpt: With competition playing a critical role in market-based strategic planning and implementation, identifying and understanding competiton and competitive dynamics has become critical. In this vein, the strategic groups perspective has emerged as a powerful means to understand such competitive phenomena. Empirical approaches to model competitive dynamics within the strategic groups framework, however, have been piece meal as researchers typically resort to distinct sequential analysis by time period. To overcome the limitations of these simplistic approaches, we develop a hidden Markov model to study strategic group (competitive) dynamics. In this approach, we explicitly account for competitive dynamics over time by modeling strategic group memberships as latent states that follow a first-order Markov process. Thus, we explictly model the notion that firms adopt their strategy for the next time period based on their current strategy and respective outcomes. We illustrate the model with longitudinal data from COMPUSTAT on 63 public banks from the tri-state region of NY-OH-PA. The results show the proposed model to be superior to a number of viable alternative approaches that have been suggested in the literature. We find the existence of three strategic groups: the leveraged group has low current assets compared to current liabilities, high debt to equity, and high total borrowing to assets. The lending group consists of the largest banks that focus on lending with high ratios of gross loans to securities and gross loans to deposits. The balanced group has the largest number of banks where the values of the financial and product ratios are intermediate compared to the leveraged and lending groups. The asymmetries in the switching probabilites are also evident as there seems to be a higher probability of switching into the balanced group than switching out of this group. The switching probabilites are symmetric between the the leveraged and lending groups.

For start-up firms entering a market, it provides a model for exploiting competitive uncertainty and blind spots; for growth firms who have established some market advantages, it provides an action plan for exploiting relative resources; for mature firms, it explains how to exploit market position; finally, for firms that have no decisive resource advantage, it provides an action plan based on firm co-operative reactions.

Book excerpt: This book offers a practical, fact-based approach to explain how enterprises deliver performance over time. Rigorous methods explain how to quantify the growth, decline and interdependence within the organisation's resources and capabilities as well as the continuous interactions with competitors and other external factors. These methods create clear and practical pictures of the strategic architecture driving earnings and other performance outcomes, not just for commercial firms, but for non-profit cases too. Management is then well-equipped to answer three crucial questions in their strategy development : why has the business performed as it has to date? where is performance headed in the future if we carry on as now? and how can we alter this future for the better? The book provides the basis for an entire course on the time-based perspective on competitive strategy, connecting strongly to established static frameworks. Alternatively it offers a vital missing component for existing courses in strategy and general management, as well as a key reference text for professionals in corporate development, consulting and business analysis.

Book excerpt: This thesis investigates the competitive dynamics in the global insurance industry from 1999 to 2008. After reviewing the current state of the academic debate on interfirm rivalry, it derives a research agenda spanning different levels of analysis and phenomena of interest. Specifically, the thesis explores (1) how and why firms continuously adjust their strategic profiles in the presence of an industry's strategic group structure, (2) whether market shocks (namely 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina) temporarily change the decision-logic underlying competitive choices, and (3) whether stock markets respond differently to competitive moves that follow a clearly stated strategic rationale.

Book excerpt: Management Dynamics in Strategic Alliances is a volume in the book series Research in Strategic Alliances that will focus on providing a robust and comprehensive forum for new scholarship in the field of strategic alliances. In particular, the books in the series will cover new views of interdisciplinary theoretical frameworks and models, significant practical problems of alliance organization and management, and emerging areas of inquiry. The series will also include comprehensive empirical studies of selected segments of business, economic, industrial, government, and non-profit activities with wide prevalence of strategic alliances. Through the ongoing release of focused topical titles, this book series will seek to disseminate theoretical insights and practical management information that will enable interested professionals to gain a rigorous and comprehensive understanding of the field of strategic alliances. Management Dynamics in Strategic Alliances contains contributions by leading scholars in the field of strategic alliance research. The 12 chapters in this volume cover a number of significant topics relating to the management of strategic alliances. The chapters discuss both the broader issues, such as governance structure choice, dynamics of alliance conditions, co-evolutionary dynamics, learning dynamics, and the management of internal tensions, and the more focused problems of controls in interfirm settings, dilemmas of cooperation, value creation in alliance portfolios, and alliance management experiences in the construction and automobile industries. The chapters include empirical as well as conceptual treatments of the selected topics, and collectively present a wide-ranging review of the management dynamics in strategic alliances.

Book excerpt: In this book Kim provides the reader with a reliable method to develop "joined up" strategies and plans for common business situations - a powerful addition to current tools and frameworks. The initial focus is on the core "strategic architecture" of the business, which explains how performance arises from its system of real elements (customers, staff, products, capacity, cash). Later chapters extend the method to deal with the quality and development of customers and other resources, competition, policy decisions, intangible factors and organizational capabilities. The strategy dynamics method deploys the rigorous, scientific method of system dynamics - essentially the application of engineering control theory principles to social systems. The method leads to the creation of working, quantified models of any enterprise, or any part thereof, of any scale, in any sector-or of any issue that such an enterprise may face. Kim uses clear, every-day language, and develops examples demonstrating how to create working, quantified models we need to develop and manage strategy. The book is supported by the Sysdea strategy planning software. Many of Kim's example models are available online for the reader to explore. Sysdea - www.sysdea.com. We use cluster analysis to subdivide Insurance Groups into Strategic Groups. Furthermore, we analyse whether Strategic Group affiliation can affect the performance of the Insurance Groups' property-liability subsidiaries. In addition, we examine the consequences of the financial crisis of 2008 on the competitive situation in the German insurance sector and examine whether changes in Strategic Group affiliation can be considered as a consequence of the financial crisis. Using a dataset of 829 firm year observations for the years 2004 to 2012, our results indicate the existence of three Strategic Groups in the German insurance sector. In addition, we find that performance differences on subsidiary-level can be attributed to Strategic Group affiliation. Furthermore, we do not find evidence that the financial crisis induced changes in Strategic Group affiliation.

Book excerpt: Recent theoretical developments in the domain of strategic groups, specifically those related to cognitive groups and strategic group identity, seem to suggest that strategic group membership is likely to be relatively stable over time and that firms in a strategic group co-evolve. Yet appropriate data analytic approaches that use information about firms over time to identify stable strategic groups and their evolutionary paths have been lacking. To overcome such limitations, this research proposes a new clusterwise bilinear multidimensional scaling model that can simultaneously identify (1) the number of strategic groups, (2) the dimensions on which the strategic groups are based, and (3) the evolution of the strategy of these groups over time. Our discussion encompasses various alternative model specifications, together with model selection heuristics based on statistical information criteria. An illustration of the proposed methodology using data pertaining to strategic variables for a sample of public banks in the tristate area of New York, Ohio, and Pennsylvania across three time periods (1995, 1999, and 2003) identifies two underlying dimensions with five strategic groups that display very different evolutionary paths over time. Post hoc analysis shows pronounced differences in firm performance across the five derived strategic groups. This article concludes with a discussion of the implications of the findings, as well as potential future research directions. John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
