Book excerpt: The contribution of a cement-stabilized base course to the strength of the rigid pavement structure is poorly understood. The objective of this research was to obtain data on the response of the ng'id pavement slab-joint-foundation system by conducting laboratory-scale experiments on jointed rigid pavement models and to develop a comprehensive three-dimensional (3D) finite element model of the rigid pavement slabjoint4oundation system that can be implemented in the advanced pavement design concepts currently under development by the Federal Aviation Administration. Evidence from experiments conducted on six laboratory-scale jointed rigid pavement models suggests that the joint efficiency depends upon the presence and condition of a stabilized base. The presence of cracking in the base and the degree of bonding between the slabs and the stabilized base course influence the structural capacity and load transfer capability of the rigid pavement structure. The finite element model developed in this research indicates that a comprehensive 3D finite element modeling technique provides a rational approach to modeling the structural response of the jointed rigid airport pavement system. Modeling features which are required include explicit 3D modeling of the slab continua, load transfer capability at the joint (modeled springs between the slabs), explicit 3D modeling of the base course continua, aggregate interlock capability across the cracks in the base course (again, modeled by springs across the crack), and contact interaction between the slabs and base course. The contact interaction model feature must allow gaps to open between the slab and base. Furthermore, where the slabs and base are in contact, transfer of shear stresses across the interface via friction should be modeled.

Book excerpt: A three-dimensional (3-D) finite element model for concrete pavements, called 3DPAVE, was developed in this study in order to analyze accurately the many complex and interacting factors which influence the support provided to a concrete pavement. Pavement support and finite element models for pavements were first briefly reviewed. Based on the review, the ABAQUS general-purpose finite element software was used to develop a powerful and versatile 3-D model to overcome many of the inherent limitations of 2-D finite element models. A careful analysis of ABAQUS' many element types, features and options was conducted to select the components which would produce a robust and efficient model. The 3DPAVE consistently outperformed the 2-D model in accuracy over wide ranges of inputs for a variety of problems during its development. 3DPAVE was validated by comparison with measured deflection, stress, and strain data for traffic loading and temperature variation from AASHO Road Test, the Arlington Road Test, and the Portland Cement Association's slab experiments. In every comparison with measured field data, 3DPAVE's calculated responses were found to be in very good agreement with the measured responses. Applications of 3DPAVE were made to explore many complicated effects and interactions in concrete pavements, including foundation support; base thickness, stiffness, and interface bond/friction; slab curling and warping due to temperature and moisture gradients; dowel and aggregate interlock load transfer action at joints; and improved support with a widened lane, widened base, or tied concrete shoulder.

Book excerpt: Current design procedures for concrete pavements do not account for several factors that can influence their service life. In this work, these factors are investigated and the findings are integrated into a procedure for better predicting longterm performance of concrete pavements. To achieve this, sophisticated finite element techniques are employed and parametric studies are performed. The findings are then integrated into a nonlinear procedure for damage accumulation. In the development of the comprehensive 3D Finite Element (FE) model several issues are studied including the geometry of the model, mesh refinement, element selection, interaction between pavement components, and loading simulation. The developed model is then used in a number of parametric studies to investigate the effect of soil conditions, subbase and slab thickness, and slab length and stiffness on the developed stresses. Among other findings, it is established that for a given slab length, increasing the slab thickness beyond a certain limit is not justifiable. The developed FE model is also used to investigate the behavior of skewed concrete pavement slabs under several loading conditions. In particular, the crack patterns obtained from the FE analyses are compared to those observed in an actual skewed concrete pavement. It is found that the developed FE model is able to successfully predict the cause and orientation of the failure of this pavement section. An investigation of various existing fatigue equations is also carried out and a software tool is developed to perform both linear and nonlinear damage accumulation calculations. A case study of an pavement section on Interstate 70, which has failed prematurely, is created using the previously developed finite element techniques. The resulting stresses from the finite element analyses under various loading conditions are then used in the damage analysis of the pavement section. It is predicted that, irrespective of how the damage is accumulated, the pavement should have failed at an early age. Nonlinear damage accumulation predicted that the failure would occur at an earlier age than linear damage accumulation, which is consistent with the observed behavior of the pavement section.

Book excerpt: Multi-layer analyses are commonly used to analyze falling weight deflactometer (FWD) measurements and back calculate pavement layer moduli. This type of analysis assumes static loading conditions and linear elastic material properties. The FWD loading cycle cannot be considered in any sense as a static load. It is a dynamic load with a duration in the range of 30 to 40 msec. Also, paving materials and subgrades are not linear elastic materials and their response to static loads is different than that to dynamic loads, such as FWD loading. The difference between the multi-layer analysis assumptions and actual loading and material conditions is significant.
