Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the main problems in control theory is the stabilization problem consisting of finding a feedback control law ensuring stability; when the linear approximation is considered, the nat ural problem is stabilization of a linear system by linear state feedback or by using a linear dynamic controller. This prob lem was intensively studied during the last decades and many important results have been obtained. The present monograph is based mainly on results obtained by the authors. It focuses on stabilization of systems with slow and fast motions, on stabilization procedures that use only poor information about the system (high-gain stabilization and adaptive stabilization), and also on discrete time implementa tion of the stabilizing procedures. These topics are important in many applications of stabilization theory. We hope that this monograph may illustrate the way in which mathematical theories do influence advanced technol ogy. This book is not intended to be a text book nor a guide for control-designers. In engineering practice, control-design is a very complex task in which stability is only one of the re quirements and many aspects and facets of the problem have to be taken into consideration. Even if we restrict ourselves to stabilization, the book does not provide just recipes, but it fo cuses more on the ideas lying behind the recipes. In short, this is not a book on control, but on some mathematics of control.

Book excerpt: Unifying two decades of research, this book is the first to establish a comprehensive foundation for a systematic analysis and design of linear systems with general state and input constraints. For such systems, which can be used as models for most nonlinear systems, the issues of stability, controller design, additonal constraints, and satisfactory performance are addressed. The book is an excellent reference for practicing engineers, graduate students, and researchers in control systems theory and design. It may also serve as an advanced graduate text for a course or a seminar in nonlinear control systems theory and design in applied mathematics or engineering departments. Minimal prerequisites include a first graduate course in state-space methods as well as a first course in control systems design.

It presents new and unified visions of the numerous problems that Laurent Praly has worked on in his prolific career: adaptive control, output feedback and observers, stability and stabilization. His main contributions are the central topic of this book. The book collects contributions written by prominent international experts in the control community, addressing a rich variety of topics: emerging ideas, advanced applications, and theoretical concepts. Organized in three sections, the first section covers the field of adaptive control, where Laurent Praly started his career. The second section focuses on stabilization and output feedback, which is also the topic of the second half of his career. Lastly, the third section presents the emerging research that will form Laurent Praly’s scientific legacy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents several novel constructive methodologies for global stabilization and H-infinity control in switched dynamic systems by using the systems’ structure information. The main features of these new approaches are twofold: i) Novel Lyapunov functions are constructed and new switching strategies are designed to guarantee global finite-time stabilization of the closed-loop switched dynamic systems, while ii) without posing any internal stability requirements on subsystems, the standard H-infinity control problem of the switched dynamic systems is solved by means of dwell-time switching techniques. Systematically presenting constructive methods for analyzing and synthesizing switched systems, the content is of great significance to theoretical research and practical applications involving switched systems alike. The book provides a unified framework for stability analysis, stabilization and H-infinity control of switched systems, making it a valuable resource for researchers and graduate students who want to learn about the state of the art in the analysis and synthesis of switched systems, as well as recent advances in switched linear systems. In addition, it offers a wealth of cutting-edge constructive methods and algorithm designs for researchers who work with switched dynamic systems and graduate students of control theory and control engineering.

Book excerpt: The authors here provide a detailed treatment of the design of robust adaptive controllers for nonlinear systems with uncertainties. They employ a new tool based on the ideas of system immersion and manifold invariance. New algorithms are delivered for the construction of robust asymptotically-stabilizing and adaptive control laws for nonlinear systems. The methods proposed lead to modular schemes that are easier to tune than their counterparts obtained from Lyapunov redesign.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Automatic feedback control systems play crucial roles in many fields, including manufacturing industries, communications, naval and space systems. At its simplest, a control system represents a feedback loop in which the difference between the ideal (input) and actual (output) signals is used to modify the behaviour of the system. Control systems are in our homes, computers, cars and toys. Basic control principles can also be found in areas such as medicine, biology and economics, where feedback mechanisms are ever present. Linear and Nonlinear Multivariable Feedback Control presents a highly original, unified control theory of both linear and nonlinear multivariable (also known as multi-input multi-output (MIMO)) feedback systems as a straightforward extension of classical control theory. It shows how the classical engineering methods look in the multidimensional case and how practising engineers or researchers can apply them to the analysis and design of linear and nonlinear MIMO systems. This comprehensive book: uses a fresh approach, bridging the gap between classical and modern, linear and nonlinear multivariable control theories; includes vital nonlinear topics such as limit cycle prediction and forced oscillations analysis on the basis of the describing function method and absolute stability analysis by means of the primary classical frequency-domain criteria (e.g. Popov, circle or parabolic criteria); reinforces the main themes with practical worked examples solved by a special MATLAB-based graphical user interface, as well as with problems, questions and exercises on an accompanying website. The approaches presented in Linear and Nonlinear Multivariable Feedback Control form an invaluable resource for graduate and undergraduate students studying multivariable feedback control as well as those studying classical or modern control theories. The book also provides a useful reference for researchers, experts and practitioners working in industry

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This graduate-level text focuses on the stability of adaptive systems, and offers a thorough understanding of the global stability properties essential to designing adaptive systems. Its self-contained, unified presentation of well-known results establishes the close connections between seemingly independent developments in the field. Prerequisites include a knowledge of linear algebra and differential equations, as well as a familiarity with basic concepts in linear systems theory. The first chapter sets the tone for the entire book, introducing basic concepts and tracing the evolution of the field from the 1960s through the 1980s. The first seven chapters are accessible to beginners, and the final four chapters are geared toward more advanced, research-oriented students. Problems ranging in complexity from relatively easy to quite difficult appear throughout the text. Topics include results in stability theory that emphasize incidents directly relevant to the study of adaptive systems; the stability properties of adaptive observers and controllers; the important concept of persistent excitation; the use of error models in systems analysis; areas of intense research activity; and five detailed case studies of systems in which adaptive control has proved successful
