We have been damning men and nations and have not been doing much thinking. I should say there has not been half enough real thinking done. We have overlooked the fundamentals and lost sight of the very things we needed most to know, the things that would have been of the greatest comfort when the days were the darkest, the things that would have been the greatest stimulus to our courage and that would have lead to intelligent action. Carlyle said, A thinking man is the worst enemy the prince of darkness can have, and just now we need thinking men, if ever. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Democracy, Vol. 1 of 2: In America Inpresenting the translation of this work to the public, preceded by an Introduction in which the author calls the attention of the reader to the present social state of France, I may perhaps be allowed to say a few words on the inferences which are to be drawn from the democratic in stitutions of America relative to our own political condition. We live at a time when so many of the maxims of government are worn out, that in casting our eyes upon the aphorisms of the great statesmen of Europe, we are astonished to find that the authority they attempted to defend is vanished, and the principles by which they de fended it are no more. The book of The Prince' is closed for ever as a State manual. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. People have studied the outside of the body of democracy; they have hardly begun to know what makes its life, or upon what its good health depends. Democracy is on trial in the world, on a more colossal scale than ever before. Its friends per haps never faced more difficult problems. Neither have they ever had so much reason to hope for success. The book sets out with a profound faith in the validity of the democratic principle and its object is to trace the path along which the logic of this principle appears to lead. No claim is made to expert knowledge of economics or political science but the writer has endeavoured to acquaint himself with the recent literature of the subjeet and to understand the main currents of prevailing opinion and feeling. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Irresistible Movement of Democracy The object of this book is to tell the story of democracy from its first beginnings in the modern world until its culmination in our time. The idea was first suggested to me by trying to under stand what was meant by the famous phrase used during the world war, - to make the world safe for democracy. It sug gested the questions, What was democracy? What were the advantages of a form of government for which the world was striving? If democracy was attained, would it be a gain for humanity? Democracy has always been difficult of definition and much misunderstanding of its true nature has arisen because men have used the term in different senses. Democracy may mean either a spirit of society, a state of society, or a form of government. I have taken democracy in the usual meaning as accepted by Bryce, Lecky and Maine, as a form of popular government. In this general sense it has been used by modern writers, and its modern advent dates from the time when nations and men began to seek a form of government based upon the popular will as expressed in universal suffrage. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Democracy and Social Change In this rapidly changing world the American people, like those of the other democracies, do not yet know which way they are going. They are beginning dimly to realize that the period of stability for capitalist civilization is ended, that they are now caught in the swiftly moving currents produced by the breakup of an historic period. If they are to make headway it is high time for them to get their bearings and chart their course. Otherwise they will get the war they do not want and more of the unemployment they need not have; and these things, as the experience of Europe shows, will destroy the democracy they wish to preserve. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Democracy: A Study of Government Destruction, and this very confession of solicitude involved in such concessions affords some invigora tion for the forces of reaction. When the idolaters of democracy begin to falter or to retreat it is time for the philosophers to take courage. That the status of political conditions is what it is here rep resented to be can best be shown by comparing the work of Mr. Lecky with that of De Tocqueville, and both with the political circumstances in which they arose. Putting the statement in a slightly different form, the most important feature Of modern political history has been the struggle Of democracy against monarchy.
