Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elizabeth L. Hinson-Hasty pursues places where care for people with serious mental illness and their families is unraveled in the United States. She picks up threads of empowerment from the Christian tradition to address the distinctive circumstances of individuals and families affected by mental illness, and draws upon her own experiences as the sibling of someone with serious mental illness (SMI). As a scholar of theology and Christian ethics, the author challenges the traditional theological explanations of disability and madness and the public policies that try to fit people with SMI into boxes and checklists made for those with minds and bodies society values as ideal. Dutiful Love explores the distinctive relationship between self-sacrificial love and caregiving when that duty to care extends over the course of an entire lifetime because of social limitations placed upon people with mental illness. Hinson-Hasty investigates how the Christian theological tradition shapes our Western understanding of normal and abnormal minds and bodies. This approach to mental and physical impairment associates healing with curing but neglects the empowerment thread that is part of the gospel narrative. The author encourages caregivers (whether professionals, friends, or families) to think about the concept of self-giving as an alternative to self-sacrifice. In the context of families impacted by mental illness or degenerative disease, healing is more synonymous with presence. Intentional presence involves self-giving, listening, contemplation, prophetic truth-telling, and walking with another so that isolation, stigma, and shame no longer define the social realities of people with mental illness, their siblings, or their larger families. The book includes discussion questions, making it an ideal resource for individual reflection, church study groups, and college, seminary, and university classrooms.

Growing up in a devout Muslim household, it felt impossible for Mohsin to be gay. Unable to be open with his family, and with difficult conditions at school, he felt his opportunities closing around him. Despite the odds, Mohsin's perseverance led him to become the first person from his school to attend Oxford University, where new experiences and encounters helped him to discover who he truly wanted to be. Mohsin was confronted with the biggest decision he would ever make: to live the life that was expected of him or to live as his authentic self. Book excerpt: As the pandemic was raging in 2021 and wreaking emotional havoc on many people, the author was inspired to start writing a practical self-help book on emotional intelligence. He posted a picture of himself on Facebook with a wall of beautiful flowers behind him. The caption was a quote from singer John Denver, “sunshine on my shoulders keeps me happy.” It received nearly 400 likes/loves. There is a deep yearning for happiness. He then invited his Facebook friends to help him draft the book. This book is the product of three months of intense and exciting co-creation among twenty people. They helped by commenting, drafting paragraphs or chapters, editing, contributing their photographs, contributing their stories and experiences, planning social media marketing, and helping with the book launching on 14 February 2022. They felt a Guiding Hand and a Purpose behind them. The co-creators of this handbook hope that you, dear readers, will feel it too.

What are the fruits of this spiritual life, and what are the hindrances and helps for cultivating it? In this classic treatise of Reformed spirituality, Campegius Vitringa provides answers to these questions as he teaches what it means to be made alive in Christ. Translated into English for the first time, The Spiritual Life is accompanied by a helpful biographical sketch of the author and revives the riches of Reformed piety for a new generation of readers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is one of the saddest pictures in all the Bible. Jesus Christ is outside of the professing church pleading for entrance. The strict interpretation of this passage is, "Behold, I have taken my stand at the door, and am knocking." This is an activity going on today. He continues knocking, for sorted out Christendom is in numerous quarters energized with a same soul that characterized the husbandmen in the story of Luke 20:9-18. By and by we see where men have assumed control or taken over what rightly belongs to God. A equally heart-searching message is here also for the individual Christian. This tender but delicate request isn't expressed in the voice of the Judge of Revelation 20, yet originates from our High Priest's heart of love for His blood-bought people. Jesus needs to impart the best of paradise's endowments to His own. The steadiness of this love is confirmed or evidenced by the fact, as we have noted previously, that He continues knocking. Is it accurate to say that we are among the individuals who have received salvation from Him but then have defied and rebelled surrendering our everything to Him? Instead of His finding an open heart, would he say he is stood up to with a closed door? Having readily acknowledged discharge (release) from wrongdoing's (sin's) guilt and embraced the assurance of paradise, would we say we are yet rejecting or refusing Him access to various areas of our regular day to day lives? He wants to share with us glories far above anything we could ask or think; but the latch is on our side of the door; He won't force His benefits on any of us. He promises to come in and sup with us. Of this Ottman has expressed: "A dinner is a night supper, it is the last taken before the morning breaks and the day first lights. It is since a long time ago the apostle stated, "The night is far spent, the day is at hand'; to sup with Christ before morning breaks is a foretaste of the coming glory...of heaven." The time is growing short, and by keeping Him on the outside we are presently missing the best He has for us. Let us make a full and happy surrender to Him. We will find as John expressed in his first epistle: "Truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ."
