Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Filmatized in 2013 and the official recipient of three Oscars, Solomon Northup's powerful slave narrative 'Twelve Years a Slave' depicts Nortup's life as he is sold into slavery after having spent 32 years of his life living as a free man in New York. Working as a travelling musician, Northup goes to Washington D.C, where he is kidnapped, sent to New Orleans, and sold to a planter to suffer the relentless and brutal life of a slave. After a dozen years, Northup escapes to return to his family and pulls no punches, as he describes his fate and that of so many other black people at the time. It is a harrowing but vitally important book, even today. For further reading on this subject, try 'Uncle Tom's Cabin' by Harriet Beecher Stowe. Solomon Northup (c.1807-c.1875) was an American abolitionist and writer, best remembered for his powerful race memoir 'Twelve Years a Slave'. At the age of 32, when he was a married farmer, father-of-three, violinist and free-born man, he was kidnapped in Washington D.C and shipped to New Orleans, sold to a planter and enslaved for a dozen years. When he gained his freedom, he wrote his famous memoir and spent some years lecturing across the US,on behalf of the abolitionist movement. 'Twelve Years a Slave' was published a year after 'Uncle Tom's Cabin' by Harriet Beecher Stowe and built on the anti-slavery momentum it had developed. Northup's final years are something of a mystery, though it is thought that he struggled to cope with family life after being freed.

Book Synopsis Humour Translation in the Age of Multimedia by : Margherita Dore
Download or read book Humour Translation in the Age of Multimedia written by Margherita Dore and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-11-02 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume seeks to investigate how humour translation has developed since the beginning of the 21st century, focusing in particular on new ways of communication. The authors, drawn from a range of countries, cultures and academic traditions, address and debate how today’s globalised communication, media and new technologies are influencing and shaping the translation of humour. Examining both how humour translation exploits new means of communication and how the processes of humour translation may be challenged and enhanced by technologies, the chapters cover theoretical foundations and implications, and methodological practices and challenges. They include a description of current research or practice, and comments on possible future developments. The contributions interconnect around the issue of humour creation and translation in the 21st century, which can truly be labelled as the age of multimedia. Accessible and engaging, this is essential reading for advanced students and researchers in Translation Studies and Humour Studies.

Download or read book Aliens in Wonderland written by Alpha and published by . This book was released on 2010-02 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An informative in-depth look at the lives of several extraterrestrials (E.T.'s), Extraterrestrial Biological Entities (E.B.E.'s ), and aliens, what their lives are like on their planets in their galaxies, what their spaceships are like, and how they are connected to us here on Earth. In addition, the book delves into how they are important to our religion and military strength. This novel also looks at some historical revelations, future predictions, and current happenings including an interesting collection of anecdotes regarding an ex-CIA agent who gets his wishes granted. It's the author's intention to, at the very least, bridge the gaps that exist between the religions of our generation. One gap is between our present long standing accepted knowledge of our concept of God, and our comprehensible real God. As well, a gap exists between how we are told we should interpret and demonstrate the meaning of God and how we show our faith and prove our belief in the living Creator. These are some things that the author thinks everyone needs to know about God, Satan, and UFOs. This book has been a long time in the making, twenty years, but somehow it still manages to remain ahead of its time, in most cases.

Book Synopsis Yann Tiersen - Kerber by : Yann Tiersen
Download or read book Yann Tiersen - Kerber written by Yann Tiersen and published by Hal Leonard Corporation. This book was released on 2021-07-01 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Piano Solo Songbook). "I think there is a similarity between the infinite big and the infinite smallness of everything," says Yann Tiersen. "It's the same experiment looking through a microscope as it is a telescope." Named after a chapel in a small village on the island of Ushant, Kerber marks a new chapter in critically-acclaimed composer Yann Tiersen's career. A chapter still true to Tiersen's nuanced and subtle approach but one that sets out with his most overtly electronic material to date. Beautifully textured, highly immersive and thoughtfully constructed, Tiersen creates an electronic world, providing an environment in which the piano source exists. A sense of place has often been a central theme in Tiersen's work and here that is no different. Each track is tied to a place mapping out the immediate landscape that surrounds Tiersen's home, linking back to his thoughts on the possibilities of the infinite smallness. This official, exclusive folio is beautifully printed on high-quality, uncoated paper with striking graphic artwork. All seven pieces are presented for solo piano and follow an exclusive introduction to the project.
Book Synopsis Popular Music and the New Auteur by : Arved Ashby
Download or read book Popular Music and the New Auteur written by Arved Ashby and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2013-10-30 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: MTV utterly changed the movies. Since music television arrived some 30 years ago, music videos have introduced filmmakers to a new creative vocabulary: speeds of events changed, and performance and mood came to dominate over traditional narrative storytelling. Popular Music and the New Auteur charts the impact of music videos on seven visionary directors: Martin Scorsese, Sofia Coppola, David Lynch, Wong Kar-Wai, the Coen brothers, Quentin Tarantino, and Wes Anderson. These filmmakers demonstrate a fresh kind of cinematic musicality by writing against pop songs rather than against script, and allowing popular music a determining role in narrative, imagery, and style. Featuring important new theoretical work by some of the most provocative writers in the area today, Popular Music and the New Auteur will be required reading for all who study film music and sound. It will be particularly relevant for readers in popular music studies, and its intervention in the ongoing debate on auteurism will make it necessary reading in film studies.
