Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1952 a shopkeeper named Lily Volpert was murdered in the docks district of Cardiff, known as Tiger Bay. A Somali former merchant seaman, Mahmood Hussein Mattan, was charged with the murder, convicted and hanged. But 46 years later he became the first person in British history to have a murder conviction overturned after being executed. "Hanged for the Word If" is the first book in English about this historic case. Drawing on all the available documentary evidence, including the surviving records held by the police, it tells the story of the crime, the investigation, the trial and the execution. It traces the later history of some of the people involved, and relates how another murder and an attempted murder raised doubts about Mattan's guilt. It describes the campaign to reopen the case in the 1990s and the appeal that overturned his conviction. And finally it tries to answer the question of who really killed Lily Volpert in 1952.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on everyday experiences of sexuality in the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal, this book considers personal narratives and other queer artefacts to shed light on linguistic and performative strategies of resistance, referred to as queer word- and world-making. Questions of non-normative expressions of gender and sexuality in South Africa refer to the politics of words, and to their contested meanings and valuations reflected in the way that they roll off tongues. If sexualities are not merely acts, feelings, or identities, but embodiments of desires which invoke and influence social contexts, assumptions about sexuality as a realm of situated knowledge cannot be trusted at face-value. Taylor Riley considers the meanings coded in words used to depict same-sexualities and the productive silences which surround them, and how those meanings are embraced, altered, and resisted through labors of everyday existence. The volume sheds new light on and personalizes the highly contested meanings which surround queer life and LGBTI rights in South Africa. It will be of interest to scholars and upper-level students of anthropology, queer studies and African studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1838 and 1888 the recently formed Zulu kingdom in southeastern Africa was directly challenged by the incursion of Boer pioneers aggressively seeking new lands on which to set up their independent republics, by English-speaking traders and hunters establishing their neighboring colony, and by imperial Britain intervening in Zulu affairs to safeguard Britain's position as the paramount power in southern Africa. As a result, the Zulu fought to resist Boer invasion in 1838 and British invasion in 1879. The internal strains these wars caused to the fabric of Zulu society resulted in civil wars in 1840, 1856, and 1882-1884, and Zululand itself was repeatedly partitioned between the Boers and British. In 1888, the old order in Zululand attempted a final, unsuccessful uprising against recently imposed British rule. This tangled web of invasions, civil wars, and rebellion is complex. The Historical Dictionary of the Zulu Wars unravels and elucidates Zulu history during the 50 years between the initial settler threat to the kingdom and its final dismemberment and absorption into the colonial order. A chronology, an introductory essay, a bibliography, maps, photos, and over 900 cross-referenced dictionary entries that cover the military, politics, society, economics, culture, and key players during the Zulu Wars make this an important reference for everyone from high school students to academics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Walking the Plank: To a Dhimmi Nation” reveals how America has been systematically submitting to Islam for decades as American businessmen and politicians endorse Islamic causes in exchange for oil, money, and power. Mary Christina Love describes Islam as a Russian Doll, with each victory leading to a larger victory. She shows how Islam is exerting increasing influence on America through immigration, oil economics, cultural exchange, education, political correctness, financial contributions, and the threat of terror; with 9/11 instrumental in enabling Islamic expansion in the United States by destroying evidence of who the world’s real imperialists are, and affording Muslims an affront to feel aggrieved and demand special protection status. Cohorts in what could result in the largest coup d ́état ever, Globalists and Islamists are allies that use a potpourri of tactics to eliminate Capitalism and Democracy to create a one-world government. The global warming theory, the recent financial crisis, the bailout, cap and trade, and the health care plan will establish a framework that if successful, will ultimately drive America into generations of dhimmitude. Mary Christina Love describes dhimmitude, a pacifist reaction to aggression, as submission to Islamic demands resulting from cowardice, vulnerability, bribery and extortion. A dhimmi is a non-Muslim entity that accepts the conditions of Islamic law and remains safe by surrendering to Islamic terms. She provides current, and historical examples such as the Barbary Wars, to show how America is submitting to Islam through concession and appeasement under coercion and constant fear of reprisal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: But through all these pandemonium, one thing has kept bugging my mind. Why 9-11? Why did Bin Laden and his terror brigade chose that particular September morning to unleash their terror on America and the contemporary world. I mean, only a little hyphenation separates it from the largely fateful and awe-inspiring emergency code 911 that often signals a dire situation in America. One can speculate that the terrorists settled on that fateful date for the mundane reason that the monumental tragedies they would wrought on the so-called western civilization would serve as an unforgettable warning to the Americans and the world at large of more tragic terrors ahead and hence of many more reasons for the citizens of the world to dial 911. As you can see, this is mere speculation for it is not a gift given to any sane human being to decipher what goes on in the mind of a suicidal terrorist. But whatever way you view it, 9-11 has ceased to be just a calendar day. It has become an end and a beginning of a new era, a watershed to a new life of modified freedom and abbreviated openness that has dawned on America - land of the free and home of the brave. Hence one often reads and overhears, even as I write this book, a pre-9-11 and a post-9-11 America or world. And I have every reason to suspect that for many centuries to come this earth-shattering event of September 11, 2001 will be chronicled with the ancient formulary of groundbreaking events.
