Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increasingly important in the field of communications, the study of time and band limiting is crucial for the modeling and analysis of multiband signals. This concise but comprehensive monograph is the first to be devoted specifically to this subdiscipline, providing a thorough investigation of its theory and applications. Through cutting-edge numerical methods, it develops the tools for applications not only to communications engineering, but also to optical engineering, geosciences, planetary sciences, and biomedicine. With broad coverage and a careful balance between rigor and readability, Duration and Bandwidth Limiting is a particularly original and valuable resource both for mathematicians interested in the field and for professional engineers with an interest in theory. While its main target audience is practicing scientists, the book may also serve as useful supplemental reading material for mathematically-based graduate courses in communications and signal processing.

Book excerpt: This innovative book and CD-ROM learning system offers students and teachers a hands-on, interactive tool that makes the concepts and tools of modern, computer-based signal processing immediately understandable. Built around interactive software (DASYLab) and supported by 240 illustrations, Karrenberg??'s self-tutorial emphasizes the underlying principles of signals and systems while avoiding mathematical models and equations. This approach makes the material more accessible to readers who may lack mathematical and programming sophistication yet need to use or instruct others in the skills. The CD contains all programs, videos, manuals, and the complete text. The S-version of DASYLab for Windows provides an interactive development environment for the graphic programming of signal processing systems, and, more generally, microelectronics systems. Through active links, block diagrams, a pc sound card, and a microphone, users perform signal processing of real signals, attaining a visceral knowledge of the concepts and methods. More than 200 pre-programmed systems and transparencies are included. Interactive Multimedia Introduction to Signal Processing has been awarded a prestigious digita2002 award. Digita awards are one of the most important multimedia prizes in Germany's educational market. They are awarded annually to the best educational software in various categories.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Functions of bounded variation represent an important class of functions. Studying their Fourier transforms is a valuable means of revealing their analytic properties. Moreover, it brings to light new interrelations between these functions and the real Hardy space and, correspondingly, between the Fourier transform and the Hilbert transform. This book is divided into two major parts, the first of which addresses several aspects of the behavior of the Fourier transform of a function of bounded variation in dimension one. In turn, the second part examines the Fourier transforms of multivariate functions with bounded Hardy variation. The results obtained are subsequently applicable to problems in approximation theory, summability of the Fourier series and integrability of trigonometric series.

Book excerpt: This book presents novel algorithms for designing Discrete-Time Sliding Mode Controllers (DSMCs) for Networked Control Systems (NCSs) with both types of fractional delays namely deterministic delay and random delay along with different packet loss conditions such as single packet loss and multiple packet loss that occur within the sampling period. Firstly, the switching type and non-switching type algorithms developed for the deterministic type fractional delay where the delay is compensated using Thiran’s approximation technique. A modified discrete-time sliding surface is proposed to derive the discrete-time sliding mode control algorithms. The algorithm is further extended for the random fractional delay with single packet loss and multiple packet loss situations. The random fractional delay is modelled using Poisson’s distribution function and packet loss is modelled by means of Bernoulli’s function. The condition for closed loop stability in all above situations are derived using the Lyapunov function. Lastly, the efficacy of the proposed DSMC algorithms are demonstrated by extensive simulations and also experimentally validated on a servo system.

Book excerpt: Laser Light Scattering: Basic Principles and Practice, Second Edition deals with the technical aspects of laser light scattering, including the basic principles and practice. Topics covered include light scattering theory, optical mixing spectrometry, photon correlation spectroscopy, and interferometry. Experimental methods and methods of data analysis are also described. This book is comprised of eight chapters and begins with a discussion on the interrelationship between laser light scattering and other types of scattering techniques that use X-rays and neutrons, with particular reference to momentum and energy transfers as well as time-averaged and time-dependent scattered intensity. The spectrum of scattered light and a single-particle approach to time-averaged scattered intensity are considered. The following chapters focus on photoelectric detection of the scattered electric field; optical mixing spectrometers; basic equations for photon correlation spectroscopy; and the principles of Fabry-Perot interferometry. The pertinent features of the experimental aspects of laser light scattering are also outlined, together with the Laplace inversion problem. The final chapter examines polymer molecular-weight distributions in relation to particle sizing. This monograph will be of interest to physicists.

Book excerpt: Service and network providers must be able to satisfy the demands for new services, improve the quality of service, reduce the cost of network service operations and maintenance, control performance and adapt to user demands. These challenges are so important for the future of our communication environment that it is essential to investigate different approaches for controlling and optimizing network resources. Network Control and Engineering for QoS, Security and Mobility II addresses the problem of network control and engineering with a focus on control of quality of service, management of security, and supervision of mobility. New trends in these different fields are also investigated. This volume contains the proceedings of the Second International Conference on NETwork CONtrol and Engineering (NETCON) for Quality of Service, Security and Mobility, which convened in Oman in October 2003. The conference was sponsored by the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) and organized by IFIP's Working Groups 6.2 on Network and Internetwork Architecture, 6.6 on Network Management, and 6.7 on Smart Networks.

Book excerpt: In 1984 Desmond O’Connor and David Phillips published their comprehensive book „Time-correlated Single Photon Counting“. At that time time-correlated s- gle photon counting, or TCSPC, was used primarily to record fluorescence decay functions of dye solutions in cuvettes. From the beginning, TCSPC was an am- ingly sensitive and accurate technique with excellent time-resolution. However, acquisition times were relatively slow due to the low repetition rate of the light sources and the limited speed of the electronics of the 70s and early 80s. Moreover, TCSPC was intrinsically one-dimensional, i.e. limited to the recording of the wa- form of a periodic light signal. Even with these limitations, it was a wonderful te- nique. More than 20 years have elapsed, and electronics and laser techniques have made impressive progress. The number of transistors on a single chip has approximately doubled every 18 months, resulting in a more than 1,000-fold increase in compl- ity and speed. The repetition rate and power of pulsed light sources have increased by about the same factor.
