Download or read book Duke Slater written by Neal Rozendaal and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2012-07-25 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fred "Duke" Slater was the greatest African American football player of the first half of the 20th century. Born into poverty, he developed into a two-time All-American tackle at the University of Iowa from 1918 to 1921. When the College Football Hall of Fame opened decades later, Duke was the only African American elected in the inaugural class. He then became the first black lineman in National Football League history in 1922, embarking on a remarkable ten-year career in the NFL. Incredibly, Slater was the only African American in the entire NFL for most of the late 1920s, yet he was widely recognized as one of the League's best linemen. But his pioneering influence extended beyond the gridiron. After retirement, he broke ground in the legal field as just the second black judge in Chicago history. On the field or on the bench, the inspirational life of Judge Duke Slater is a true American success story.

Book excerpt: In 2019 the NFL celebrated its 100th season. During that historic year the league selected an All-Time Team of 100 former star players. Among them were seven from before football's free substitution rule (1920-1945), two-way players who were skilled at both offense and defense. They were: Sammy Baugh (Quarterback), Dutch Clark (Running Back), Dan Fortmann (Guard), Mel Hein (Center), Cal Hubbard (Tackle), Don Hutson (Wide Receiver) and Bill Hewitt (Defensive End). There were more than just seven great players from those years, when men in leather helmets played multiple positions on dirt fields for modest salaries. This book ranks the NFL's top two-way players, with detailed biographies and analysis by their contemporaries.

Download or read book Bears vs. Cardinals written by Joe Ziemba and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2022-08-31 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In their early years, the Chicago Bears and the Chicago Cardinals-- the two oldest teams in the National Football League --travelled the country with only rare mention in the newspapers. Both teams later saw their official records destroyed by fire. Most of what is now known about those initial seasons is based on often inaccurate statements made many years later. Reconstructing their missing history, this book draws on newly available resources to document the battles and brawls on and off the field, the cunning backroom deals, the financial woes and the 40-year rivalry that endured while both teams were in Chicago. Figures like Al Capone, Red Grange, Jim Thorpe and Bronko Nagurski make appearances in the lore of two old adversaries whose uneasy alliance helped ensure the survival of the fledgling NFL.

Download or read book Glory written by Ralph Brooks and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2021 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book, Glory: The Struggle for Yards are stories gathered together to illustrate the unique cultures, history and values that unite people of all races together. It is so much more than a book of facts and individual’s personal accomplishments. Glory share stories that include powerful messages that can inspire, teach, and influence others to achieve their goals in life. These stories bring facts to life and have the ability to connect the past with the present. We start with diversity and inclusion by respecting, understanding and appreciating each other’s humanities and beliefs and most of all reading to know for your own gratification and personal experiences. These stories promote a positive attitude through football legends hardships, fears and never losing desire for taking care of their families and leaving a legacy for the future generation to understand their challenges, difficulties, misfortune and adversities. We have to remember before writing books; ancestors told stories by cave painting on the wall, as they would blow the paint through hollow bones very similar to today’s airbrushing. Campfires was also a form of storytelling performed around an open fire at night and mostly in the wilderness. We see it in today modern campfires stories with Girls Scouts and Boy Scouts of America and even with good old family reunion barbecue in the front or backyard. Glory is a book of legendary football stories that helps us understand our differences in culture with other peoples so that we can connect and communicate in love and make new friends through story telling.
Download or read book Gridiron Gauntlet written by Andy Piascik and published by Taylor Trade Publications. This book was released on 2011-09-16 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On Bloody Sunday, January 30, 1972, British paratroopers killed thirteen innocent men in Derry. It was one of the most controversial events in the history of the Northern Ireland conflict and also one of the most mediated. The horror was recorded in newspapers and photographs, on TV news and current affairs, and in film and TV drama. In a cross media analysis that spans a period of almost forty years up to the publication of the Saville Report in 2010, "The British Media and Bloody Sunday" identifies two countervailing impulses in media coverage of Bloody Sunday and its legacy: an urge in the press to rescue the image and reputation of the British Army versus a troubled conscience in TV current affairs and drama about what was done in Britain's name. In so doing, it suggests a much more complex set of representations than a straightforward propaganda analysis might allow for, one that says less about the conflict in Ireland than it does about Britain, with its loss of empire and its crisis of national identity.
