Book excerpt: Work was confined to studies of cubic crystal ductility. Such material is highly ductile at room temperature when tested in single crystal form. Surface effects are extremely important and good ductility can be obtained only with specimens having carefully prepared chemically polished surfaces. It was found that MgO single crystals are ductile at room temperature and values of elongation in excess of 10% were obtained regularly. Alloying of ionic solids increased their strength. Recent work concerned grain boundary effects on the ductility of ionic solids; experiments indicated the smaller the grain size, the higher the strength, and the greater the probability of significant deformation before fracture. High purity is essential. Extrusion was chosen as a means of fabricating fine-grained LiF and slightly ductile specimens were obtained.

Book excerpt: The prospects for developing strong oxidation-resistant alloys for use at temperatures above approximately 1800 F are not very good. It is highly desirable, therefore, to investigate the potential usefulness of the refractory ceramic compounds for use as structural components. The main drawback with this class of materials is, of course, the tendency to fracture in a brittle manner. Brittleness, however, is not an inherent limitation. As early as 1924, Joffe (1)2 showed that the normally brittle alkali halides could be made to behave in a ductile manner merely by immersing crystals of these salts in warm water while they were being loaded. Joffe explained his results as follows.

Book excerpt: This book discusses the mechanical properties of ceramics and aims to provide both a solid background for undergraduate students, as well as serving as a text to bring practicing engineers up to date with the latest developments in this topic so they can use and apply these to their actual engineering work. Generally, ceramics are made by moistening a mixture of clays, casting it into desired shapes and then firing it to a high temperature, a process known as 'vitrification'. The relatively late development of metallurgy was contingent on the availability of ceramics and the know-how to mold them into the appropriate forms. Because of the characteristics of ceramics, they offer great advantages over metals in specific applications in which hardness, wear resistance and chemical stability at high temperatures are essential. Clearly, modern ceramics manufacturing has come a long way from the early clay-processing fabrication method, and the last two decades have seen the development of sophisticated techniques to produce a large variety of ceramic material. The chapters of this volume are ordered to help students with their laboratory experiments and guide their observations in parallel with lectures based on the current text. Thus, the first chapter is devoted to mechanical testing. A chapter of ductile and superplastic ceramic is added to emphasize their role in modern ceramics (chapter 2). These are followed by the theoretical basis of the subject. Various aspects of the mechanical properties are discussed in the following chapters, among them, strengthening mechanisms, time dependent and cyclic deformation of ceramics. Many practical illustrations are provided representing various observations encountered in actual ceramic-structures of particularly technical significance. A comprehensive list of references at the end of each chapter is included in this textbook to provide a broad basis for further studying the subject. The work also contains a unique chapter on a topic not discussed in other textbooks on ceramics concerning nanosized ceramics. This work will also be useful as a reference for materials scientists, not only to those who specialize in ceramics.

Book excerpt: The feasibility of shaping polycrystalline aggregates of cubic ionic solids by metal forming methods, such as extrusion, was investigated. Efforts were directed toward the production of high purity, high density, fine grain-size extrusion of LiF and metallographic and electron microscope studies of the material produced. Extrusions made from powdered compact charges showed porosity, particularly at the surface. Extrusions made from high purity cast blanks produced rods showing no porosity. Although the production of polycrystalline ionic solids with ductility at room temperature was not achieved, the objective of this study does not appear unattainable. Material purity is a contributory, but not necessarily controlling factor, governing the room temperature ductility of solids.

Book excerpt: This proceedings volume, "Plastic Deformation of Ceramics," constitutes the papers of an international symposium held at Snowbird, Utah from August 7-12, 1994. It was attended by nearly 100 scientists and engineers from more than a dozen countries representing academia, national laboratories, and industry. Two previous conferences on this topic were held at The Pennsylvania State University in 1974 and 1983. Therefore, the last major international conference focusing on the deformation of ceramic materials was held more than a decade ago. Since the early 1980s, ceramic materials have progressed through an evolutionary period of development and advancement. They are now under consideration for applications in engineering structures. The contents of the previous conferences indicate that considerable effort was directed towards a basic understanding of deformation processes in covalently bonded or simple oxide ceramics. However, now, more than a decade later, the focus has completely shifted. In particular, the drive for more efficient heat engines has resulted in the development of silicon-based ceramics and composite ceramics. The discovery of high-temperature cupric oxide-based superconductors has created a plethora of interesting perovskite-Iike structured ceramics. Additionally, nanophase ceramics, ceramic thin films, and various forms of toughened ceramics have potential applications and, hence, their deformation has been investigated. Finally, new and exciting areas of research have attracted interest since 1983, including fatigue, nanoindentation techniques, and superplasticity.

Book excerpt: The effects of non-uniform stress distributions on fracture strength were studied on four mate rials that exhibit brittle behavior; Wesgo AL995, Mykroy 750 and 1100 (ceramics) and Plexiglas (acrylic plastic). Analysis of the results of both notch tensile and bend tests on these materials indicate that fracture in ceramic materials can be explained by a maximum fracture stress concept provided that the inherent inhomogeneity of these materials is considered in the analysis. Weibull's statistical theory of fracture appears to be ap plicable to the analysis of inhomogeneity. The be havior of Plexiglas is similar to that previously observed for high strength metals. Studies of plastic flow in metallic flat notch tensile speci mens indicate that the distribution of the princi pal longitudinal strain across the notch section is related to the distribution of the longitudinal elastic stress raised to the power b, where b is primarily a function of the strain hardening ex ponent of the material. Also, Neuber's conclusion that K sub t represents the geometric mean of the true stress and true strain concentration factors in pure shear seems generally applicable to the plane stress tension case.
