This book was released on 1993 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through classification of compact abelian group actions on semifinite injective factors, Jones and Takesaki introduced a notion of an action of a measured groupoid on a von Neumann algebra, which was proven to be an important tool for such an analysis. In this paper, elaborating their definition, the author introduces a new concept of a measured groupoid action that may fit more perfectly in the groupoid setting. The author also considers a notion of a coaction of a measured groupoid by showing the existence of a canonical "coproduct" on every groupoid von Neumann algebra.
Book Synopsis An Invitation to Quantum Groups and Duality by : Thomas Timmermann
Download or read book An Invitation to Quantum Groups and Duality written by Thomas Timmermann and published by European Mathematical Society. This book was released on 2008 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an introduction to the theory of quantum groups with emphasis on their duality and on the setting of operator algebras. Part I of the text presents the basic theory of Hopf algebras, Van Daele's duality theory of algebraic quantum groups, and Woronowicz's compact quantum groups, staying in a purely algebraic setting. Part II focuses on quantum groups in the setting of operator algebras. Woronowicz's compact quantum groups are treated in the setting of $C^*$-algebras, and the fundamental multiplicative unitaries of Baaj and Skandalis are studied in detail. An outline of Kustermans' and Vaes' comprehensive theory of locally compact quantum groups completes this part. Part III leads to selected topics, such as coactions, Baaj-Skandalis-duality, and approaches to quantum groupoids in the setting of operator algebras. The book is addressed to graduate students and non-experts from other fields. Only basic knowledge of (multi-) linear algebra is required for the first part, while the second and third part assume some familiarity with Hilbert spaces, $C^*$-algebras, and von Neumann algebras.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why This Book: The theory of von Neumann algebras has been growing in leaps and bounds in the last 20 years. It has always had strong connections with ergodic theory and mathematical physics. It is now beginning to make contact with other areas such as differential geometry and K-Theory. There seems to be a strong case for putting together a book which (a) introduces a reader to some of the basic theory needed to appreciate the recent advances, without getting bogged down by too much technical detail; (b) makes minimal assumptions on the reader's background; and (c) is small enough in size to not test the stamina and patience of the reader. This book tries to meet these requirements. In any case, it is just what its title proclaims it to be -- an invitation to the exciting world of von Neumann algebras. It is hoped that after perusing this book, the reader might be tempted to fill in the numerous (and technically, capacious) gaps in this exposition, and to delve further into the depths of the theory. For the expert, it suffices to mention here that after some preliminaries, the book commences with the Murray - von Neumann classification of factors, proceeds through the basic modular theory to the III). classification of Connes, and concludes with a discussion of crossed-products, Krieger's ratio set, examples of factors, and Takesaki's duality theorem.
Book Synopsis Crossed Products of $C^*$-Algebras by : Dana P. Williams
Download or read book Crossed Products of $C^*$-Algebras written by Dana P. Williams and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2007 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory of crossed products is extremely rich and intriguing. There are applications not only to operator algebras, but to subjects as varied as noncommutative geometry and mathematical physics. This book provides a detailed introduction to this vast subject suitable for graduate students and others whose research has contact with crossed product $C*$-algebras. in addition to providing the basic definitions and results, the main focus of this book is the fine ideal structure of crossed products as revealed by the study of induced representations via the Green-Mackey-Rieffel machine. in particular, there is an in-depth analysis of the imprimitivity theorems on which Rieffel's theory of induced representations and Morita equivalence of $C*$-algebras are based. There is also a detailed treatment of the generalized Effros-Hahn conjecture and its proof due to Gootman, Rosenberg, and Sauvageot. This book is meant to be self-contained and accessible to any graduate student coming out of a first course on operator algebras. There are appendices that deal with ancillary subjects, which while not central to the subject, are nevertheless crucial for a complete understanding of the material. Some of the appendices will be of independent interest. to view another book by this author, please visit Morita Equivalence and Continuous-Trace $C*$-Algebras.

Book Synopsis Selfadjoint and Nonselfadjoint Operator Algebras and Operator Theory by : Robert S. Doran
Download or read book Selfadjoint and Nonselfadjoint Operator Algebras and Operator Theory written by Robert S. Doran and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1991 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains papers presented at the NSF/CBMS Regional Conference on Coordinates in Operator Algebras, held at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth in May 1990. During the conference, in addition to a series of ten lectures by Paul S Muhly (which will be published in a CBMS Regional Conference Series volume), there were twenty-eight lectures delivered by conference participants on a broad range of topics of current interest in operator algebras and operator theory. This volume contains slightly expanded versions of most of those lectures. Participants were encouraged to bring open problems to the conference, and, as a result, there are over one hundred problems and questions scattered throughout this volume. Readers will appreciate this book for the overview it provides of current topics and methods of operator algebras and operator theory.
Book Synopsis Von Neumann Algebras by : J. Dixmier
Download or read book Von Neumann Algebras written by J. Dixmier and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2011-08-18 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, we study, under the name of von Neumann algebras, those algebras generally known as “rings of operators“ or “W*-algebras.“ The new terminology, suggested by J. Dieudonng, is fully justified from the historical point of view. Certain of the results are valid for more general algebras. We have, however systematically avoided this kind of generalization, except when it would facilitate the study of von Neumann algebras themselves. Parts I and I1 comprise those results which at present appear to’be the most useful for applications, although we do not embark on the study of those applications. Part 111, which is more technical, is primarily intended for specialists; it is virtually independent of Part 11.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mathematics for infinite dimensional objects is becoming more and more important today both in theory and application. Rings of operators, renamed von Neumann algebras by J. Dixmier, were first introduced by J. von Neumann fifty years ago, 1929, in [254] with his grand aim of giving a sound founda tion to mathematical sciences of infinite nature. J. von Neumann and his collaborator F. J. Murray laid down the foundation for this new field of mathematics, operator algebras, in a series of papers, [240], [241], [242], [257] and [259], during the period of the 1930s and early in the 1940s. In the introduction to this series of investigations, they stated Their solution 1 {to the problems of understanding rings of operators) seems to be essential for the further advance of abstract operator theory in Hilbert space under several aspects. First, the formal calculus with operator-rings leads to them. Second, our attempts to generalize the theory of unitary group-representations essentially beyond their classical frame have always been blocked by the unsolved questions connected with these problems. Third, various aspects of the quantum mechanical formalism suggest strongly the elucidation of this subject. Fourth, the knowledge obtained in these investigations gives an approach to a class of abstract algebras without a finite basis, which seems to differ essentially from all types hitherto investigated. Since then there has appeared a large volume of literature, and a great deal of progress has been achieved by many mathematicians.
Book Synopsis Crossed Products of von Neumann Algebras by Equivalence Relations and Their Subalgebras by : Igor Fulman
Download or read book Crossed Products of von Neumann Algebras by Equivalence Relations and Their Subalgebras written by Igor Fulman and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1997 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, the author introduces and studies the construction of the crossed product of a von Neumann algebra. This construction is the generalization of the construction of the crossed product of an abelian von Neumann algebra by an equivalence relation introduced by J. Feldman and C. C. Moore. Many properties of this construction are proved in the general case. In addition, the generalizations of the Spectral Theorem on Bimodules and of the theorem on dilations are proved.
