Book Synopsis Dualisability by : Jane G. Pitkethly
Download or read book Dualisability written by Jane G. Pitkethly and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-03-30 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natural duality theory is one of the major growth areas within general algebra. This text provides a short path to the forefront of research in duality theory. It presents a coherent approach to new results in the area, as well as exposing open problems. Unary algebras play a special role throughout the text. Individual unary algebras are relatively simple and easy to work with. But as a class they have a rich and complex entanglement with dualisability. This combination of local simplicity and global complexity ensures that, for the study of natural duality theory, unary algebras are an excellent source of examples and counterexamples. A number of results appear here for the first time. In particular, the text ends with an appendix that provides a new and definitive approach to the concept of the rank of a finite algebra and its relationship with strong dualisability.
Book Synopsis Dynamic Cognitive Processes by : Nobuo Ohta
Download or read book Dynamic Cognitive Processes written by Nobuo Ohta and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-04-04 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conference from which this book derives took place in Tsukuba, Japan in March 2004. The fifth in a continuing series of conferences, this one was organized to examine dynamic processes in "lower order" cognition from perception to attention to memory, considering both the behavioral and the neural levels. We were fortunate to attract a terrific group of con tributors representing five countries, which resulted in an exciting confer ence and, as the reader will quickly discover, an excellent set of chapters. In Chapter 1, we will provide a sketchy "road map" to these chapters, elu cidating some of the themes that emerged at the conference. The conference itself was wonderful. We very much enjoyed the vari ety of viewpoints and issues that we all had the opportunity to grapple with. There were lively and spirited exchanges, and many chances to talk to each other about exciting new research, precisely what a good confer ence should promote. We hope that the readers of this book will have the same experience—moving from careful experimental designs in the cogni tive laboratory to neural mechanisms measured by new technologies, from the laboratory to the emergency room, from perceptual learning to changes in memory over decades, all the while squarely focusing on how best to explain cognition, not simply to measure it. Ultimately, the goal of science is, of course, explanation. We also hope that the reader will come away absolutely convinced that cognition is a thoroughly dynamic, interactive system.

Book Synopsis Dualisability and Semigroups by : Bradley Knox
Download or read book Dualisability and Semigroups written by Bradley Knox and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At present, the problem of characterising naturally dualisable algebras in general appears as intractable as ever. The complexity of the Dualisability Problem 7F 14 "Which finite algebras are dualisable?" - can be gauged by a general trend that sees a new technique being developed to address the question for each new scope in which it is asked. There also seems to be no pattern to the results that have been obtained so far in the literature. When investigating certain classes of presumably "simple" algebras, dualisable and non-dualisable algebras can be tangled together in a confounding way. In other classes, complete and intriguing characterisations have been discovered. Recently, it has been shown that the property of dualisability is unstable under common algebraic constructions. The product of dualisable algebras need not be dualisable. Some non-dualisable algebras have even been found to be embeddable in dualisable algebras.

Book excerpt: We look at non-dualisable {0, 1}-valued finite unary algebras with 0 where meet is defined on the algebra and join is partially defined. More specifically, we look at Join Upper Bounded Algebras with unique rows, as well as two types of Join Upper Bounded Algebras with non-unique rows: non-one-double-algebras and one-doubled-algebras. We then determine what tangled functions need to be included for an extension of the algebra to be dualisable. It turns out that just including the tangled functions for non-one-doubled-algebras and one-doubled-algebras is not enough to guarantee dualisability. We then define the additional functions needed for dualisability of the extension. --Leaf i.
