Book excerpt: In 1985, surveys designed specifically to address the issues most relevant to dual Army career couples were administered to 149 officers and 405 enlisted personnel in dual Army career marriages. Using a series of multiple regression analyses, relationships between career intentions and a number of work, dual Army career, and family-related factors were assessed separately for men and women. Results indicated that for both men and women, family concerns (e.g., pregnancy, children, assignments) accounted for variance in career intentions over and above the effects of work-related variables (e.g., pay and benefits, Army satisfaction) traditionally associated with retention. However, even in regressions including time in service, enlisted/officer status, and work-related variables as well as the family concern items, only about one-third of the variance in career intentions was explained. The results suggest that additional factors not captured in the models tested here are salient in the career-decision process of dual Army career couples. (sdw).

Book excerpt: This report provides a comparison of the work/family attitudes of dual military member Air Force couples with those of Air Force couples with a civilian spouse. Results of analyses of responses to the U.S. Air Force Spouse Survey and the Organizational Assessment Package show dual military member couples to be less satisfied with on-base services, more frustrated with their jobs and work environment, and less apt to be influenced in a career decision by job benefits or patriotism. When viewed in light of demographic differences between the comparison groups, dual military member couples were characterized as more motivated to achieve, more confident of their abilities, and more frustrated with not achieving their potential in their jobs. Includes a review of literature on the work/family interface, and recommendations for Air Force leaders.

Book excerpt: "The purpose of this study is to analyze the work careers and family life course of dual-military couples and their decision making processes using a life course perspective. Using a grounded theory methodology, the author interviewed and analyzed the transcripts of 23 dual-military officer couples in the U.S. Navy. One of the significant current challenges for the Army is the marriage of one military service member to another military service member - officially known as a dual military couple. The number of dual-military families has been increasing since the military provided the opportunity. The current long war has exerted significant pressure on military families, especially on dual-military families. This SRP examines dual-military couples' personal and family struggles as a result of the challenges they face in fighting the long war. It also examines the Married Army Couples Program since 9/11, its impact on readiness, the challenges of dual-military couple assignments, and the Army's OPTEMPO impact on dual-military marriages. Army professionals at all levels have sacrificed much to perform their wartime duties.

Growing public concern for the federal deficit, the perception of a much diminished Soviet threat and ballooning demands for domestic social programs have exerted tremendous pressures on Congress to reduce the Department of Defense budget. One of the key challenges facing the Army's senior leadership today is how to reduce the force structure and maintain an acceptable level of readiness. This study examines the impact of dual Army couples on readiness. Presented in this study is a review of previous studies and applicable literature on dual Army couples are examined. Professional development issues for dual Army couples are explored in depth with particular emphasis on officer professional development. This study concludes that there is no measurable direct impact on unit readiness. However, an indirect impact on readiness results from conflicting professional development needs of dual Army couples and their twin commitments to the Army and their marriage.
