Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These two volumes, entitled "Purine Metabolism in Man IV" con tain the papers presented at the Fourth International Symposium on Human Purine and Pyrimidine Metabolism", held in Maastricht (The Netherlands), June 1982. The proceedings of the three previous meet ings in Tel Aviv (Israel, 1973), Baden (Austria, 1976) and Madrid (Spain, 1979) were also published by Plenum Press. In the past few years interest in purine and pyrimidine metabo lism under normal and pathological conditions has been growing rapid ly. Apart from the more or less classical topics such as hyperuricae mia, clinical gout and urolithiasis, an increasing number of papers relating to other fields have been presented at successive meetings. Knowledge derived from the study of purine metabolism in relation to lymphocyte function, for instance, has opened up new possibilities for immunomodulation and leukaemia chemotherapy, with eventual conse quences for other types of cancer. At previous meetings there have been pointers implicating purine metabolism in relation to normal cardiac and skeletal muscle function. During the present meeting mych new data on both issues have been re ported which indicate clear differences in the pathways of ATP metabo lism. The widening of the field of interest is also illustrated by the recent work on infectious disease: exploitation of the differences in purine metabolic pathways in certain parasites compared with those in human cells has resulted in new rationales for therapy being devel oped.

Book excerpt: DNA replication in eukaryotes is an important field, particular ly because of its direct impact on the study of cancer. The under standing of molecular mechanisms of replication and their regulation should allow a better comprehension of the alterations that lead to the proliferation of tumor cells and to error-prone repair in cells exposed to radiation or chemical carcinogens. During the last several years, many enzymes and proteins which participate in replication of DNA in eukaryotic cells have been identified, isolated and characterized. New concepts in chromatin structure have refocused attention on the study of replication of DNA complexed with his tones and non-histone chromosomal proteins. However, progress has been noticeably slower than for prokaryotes, essentially because of the difficulty in genetic analysis of eukaryo tic DNA replication. In June 1980, a workshop was organized in Cargese, Corsica (France) to facilitate exchanges of information between workers spe cializing in prokaryotes and those specializing in eukaryotes, and to allow discussion of new experimental approaches. With this in mind, special interest has been taken in the origin and termination of chromosome cycles and how they are controlled.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current Topics in Cellular Regulation, Volume 5 presents the fundamental mechanisms involved in the regulation of diverse cellular activities, including cellular differentiation, intermediary metabolism, and the transfer of genetic information. This book provides information pertinent to the various aspects of cellular regulation. Organized into eight chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the role of phosphofructokinase in the regulation of glycolysis. This text then outlines the structural aspects of phosphofructokinase, its main kinetic properties, and the various mechanisms that have been proposed for its regulation. Other chapters consider the four-stage approach to analysis of control mechanisms. This book discusses as well the regulation of cellular function through the mechanism of protein phosphorylation. The final chapter deals with the pathway for histidine biosynthesis in Salmonella typhimurium, which consists of a series of reactions, each catalyzed by a specific enzyme. This book is a valuable resource for biologists and biochemists.

The molecular machines to be discussed include ATP synthase, myosin, kinesin, DNA helicases, DNA topoisomerases, chaperones and bacterial rotory motors. The discussion of these various molecular motors is rarely undertaken in one volume and will serve as a great resource for scientists studying structure and function of multiprotein complexes as well as those working on energy coupling mechanisms. The areas of research presented in this volume do not normally overlap, and yet they share common mechanisms. This volume examines a number of different molecular motors that utilize ATP. Their application in analytical, synthetic and biotechnology processes as well as in food industry, and for medicinal treatments is added. Data sheets are arranged in their EC-Number sequence. The new edition reflects considerable progress in enzymology: the total material has more than doubled, and the complete 2nd edition consists of 39 volumes plus Synonym Index. Starting in 2009, all newly classified enzymes are treated in Supplement Volumes.

Book excerpt: The Fifth International Symposium on Human Purine and Pyrimidine Metabolism was held in San Diego, California (U. S. A. ) in July and August of 1985. Previous meetings in this series were held in Tel Aviv (Israel), Baden (Austria), Madrid (Spain) and Maastricht (The Netherlands). The proceedings of each of these meetings were published by Plenum. The next meeting will be in Japan. This Symposium differed from those that went before in that it per mitted us to honor Dr. J. E. Seegmiller, Professor of Medicine at the University of California San Diego, for his many contributions to our understanding of purine metabolism in man. This publication is dedicated as a Festschrift to Jay. Dr. Richard W. E. Watts delivered the keynote address outlining in scholarly fashion the history of Dr. Seegmiller's accomplishments in research on purine metabolism and the great number of currently active scientists in this field who have worked with him. This address is published as the first contribution to Volume I. Dr. Dewitt Stetten, Jr. , was scheduled to be the speaker at our banquet. Unfortunate ly, he could not be with us. Dr. Seegmiller has written an appreciation of Dr. Stetten and his contributions to our field, and this has been pub lished following Dr. Watts' paper. The growth of knowledge in purine and pyrimidine metabolism continues to be exponential. The variety of subjects included in these volumes is impressive.

Although the major emphasis of the book is on eukaryotic enzymes, a separate chapter dealing with prokaryotic DNA repair enzymes has been included to discuss the major advances in this field in recent years. There are two separate chapters on RNA polymerases to provide a comprehensive coverage of the enzymes from lower eukaryotes, plants and higher eukaryotes.
