Book Synopsis New Seeds and Poor People by : Michael Lipton
Download or read book New Seeds and Poor People written by Michael Lipton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-11-29 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1989, this book deals with the impact of cereal production upon the Third World, specifically ‘Modern Varieties’ (MVs). Using evidence from plant breeding, economics and nutrition science, the authors seek to pinpoint what has been achieved, what has gone wrong and what needs to be done in future. Although the technical innovations of MVs mean more employment, cheaper food and less risk for small farmers, the reduction in crop diversity increases the risk of danger from pests and though MVs enlarge cereal stocks, many are too poor to afford them. The book concludes that technical breakthroughs alone won’t solve deep-rooted social problems and that only new policies and research priorities will increase the choices, assets and power of the rural poor.
Book Synopsis Science, Agriculture and the Politics of Policy by : Ian Scoones
Download or read book Science, Agriculture and the Politics of Policy written by Ian Scoones and published by Orient Blackswan. This book was released on 2006 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science, Agriculture and the Politics of Policy examines the intersections of globalisation, technology and politics through a detailed, empirically-based examination of agricultural biotechnology in India. The focus is on Bangalore and Karnataka, a part of India which has seen a massive growth in biotech enterprises, experimentation with GM cotton and a contested policy debate about the role biotechnology should play in economic development. The book asks what does this new suite of technologies mean - for society, for politics and for the way agriculture, food and rural livelihoods are thought about? Can biotech deliver a second Green Revolution, and so transform agriculture and rescue the countryside and its people from crisis and poverty? Or is it more complex than this? Through a detailed case study, the aim of the book is to discuss, question and refine these broader debates, locating an understanding of biotechnology firmly within an understanding of society and politics.

Download or read book Savage Money written by Chris A. Gregory and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The deeper philosophical meaning of "value" is examined in this thought-provoking study of the household values that are associated with agricultural land, rural marketing, village money lending, and the use of diverse forms of "money" in Central India. Gregory (anthropology, Australian National U.) uses a comparative approach based on extensive field work in Central India to analyze the values that spring from reciprocally recognized relations of affinity, consanguinity and contiguity, and to contemplate how these relate to western notions of money and value--the "savage money" of free market capitalism. This is a second printing of a 1997 book. c. Book News Inc.
