Book excerpt: Colombia is the world's leading producer and distributor of cocaine and a major source of heroin consumed in the U.S. This report reviews the status of drug control efforts in Colombia and the impact of the 1996 and 1997 U.S. decisions to decertify Colombia as a drug-fighting ally. Specifically, examines (1) the nature of the drug-trafficking threat from Colombia; (2) the political, economic, and operational implications of the decertification decisions; and (3) U.S. efforts to plan and manage counternarcotics activities in Colombia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. has been providing assistance to Colombia since the early 1970s to help the Colombian Nat. Police and other law enforcement agencies, the military, and civilian agencies in their efforts to reduce illegal drug production and trafficking activities. Despite this assistance, Colombia remains the world's leading producer of cocaine and has become a major source of the heroin being used in the U.S. This report determines: how the drug threat has changed in recent years; what problems, if any, the U.S. has had in providing its assistance to Colombia; and what challenges the U.S. and Colombia face in reducing the illegal drug activities. Charts, tables and map. Also includes a 17-page GAO report, "Drug Control: Financial and Management Challenges Continue to Complicate Efforts to Reduce Illicit Drug Activities in Colombia," Statement of Jess T. Ford, Dir., International Affairs and Trade, Testimony Before the Caucus on International Narcotics Control, U.S. Senate (June 3, 2003)

Book Synopsis Cocaine Trafficking in Latin America by : Sayaka Fukumi
Download or read book Cocaine Trafficking in Latin America written by Sayaka Fukumi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-23 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The post-Cold War world has seen the emergence of new kinds of security threats. Whilst traditionally security threats were perceived of in terms of military threats against a state, non-traditional security threats are those that pose a threat to various internal competencies of the state and its identity both home and abroad. The European Union and the United States have identified Latin American cocaine trafficking as a security threat, but their policy responses to it have differed. This book examines the ways in which the EU and the US have conceptualized this threat. Furthermore, it explores the impact of cocaine trafficking on four state functions - economic, political, public order and diplomatic - in order to explain why it has become 'securitized'. Appealing to a variety of university courses, this book is especially relevant to security studies and European and US policy analysis, as well as criminology and sociology.
