Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this era of globalization, International Law plays a significant role in facing rapid development of various legal issues. Cultural preservation has emerged as an important legal issue that should be considered by States. This book consists of academic papers presented and discussed during the 9th International Conference of the Centre of International Law Studies (9th CILS Conference) held in Malang, Indonesia, 2-3 October 2018. The title of the book represents the major theme of the conference: "Culture and International Law." It is argued that along with globalization, cultural preservation is slowly ignored by States. Various papers presented in the book cover five topics: cultural heritage; cultural rights; culture and economic activity; culture and armed conflict; and a general topic. The authors of the papers are outstanding academics from various countries, Lithuania, United States of America, Australia, Thailand and Indonesia. The conference was organized by Universitas Indonesia in collaboration with Brawijaya University. This book aims to give a useful contribution to the existing literature on International Law, specifically focussing on cultural issues from the perspective of cultural heritage and rights, economic as well as armed conflict.

Book excerpt: We are used to thinking of human rights as a matter for state governments to deal with. Much less investigated is the question of what cities do with them, even though urban communities and municipalities have been discussing human rights for quite some time. In this volume, Grigolo borrows the concept of ‘the human rights city’ to invite us to think about a new urban utopia: a place where human rights strive to guide urban life. By turning the question of the meaning and use of human rights in cities into the object of critical investigation, this book tracks the genesis, institutionalisation and implementation of human rights in cities, focussing on New York, San Francisco and Barcelona. Touching also upon matters such as women’s rights, LGBT rights and migrant rights, The Human Rights City emphasises how human rights can serve urban justice but also a neoliberal practice of the city. This book is a useful resource for scholars and students interested in fields such as Sociology of Human Rights, Sociology of Law, International Law, Urban Sociology, Political Sociology and Social Policies.

Book excerpt: This is the Seventh volume of the "Hague Yearbook of International Law," which succeeds the "Yearbook of the Association of Attenders and Alumni" "of the Hague Academy of International Law," The title "Hague Yearbook of International Law" reflects the close ties which have always existed between the AAA and the City of The Hague with its international law institutions and indicates the editors' intention to devote attention to developments taking place in those international law institutions, viz. the International Court of Justice, the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia, the Permanent Court of Arbitration, the Iran-United States Claims Tribunal and the Hague Conference on Private International Law. The "Hague Yearbook" contains in-depth articles on these developments and summaries of (aspects of) decisions rendered by the International Court of Justice, the Permanent Court of Arbitration and the Iran-United States Claims Tribunal. This volume also contains the papers of the Regional AAA Congress, held in Siena, Italy, in May 1994.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together current research by leading international scholars on the often contentious nature of language policies and their practical outcomes in North America, Australia and Europe. It presents a range of perspectives from which to engage with a variety of pressing issues raised by multilingualism, multiculturalism, immigration, exclusion, and identity. A recurrent theme is that of tension and conflict: between uniformity and diversity, between official policies and real day-to-day life experiences, but also between policies in schools and the corporate world and their implementation. Several chapters present research about language policy issues that has previously not been fully or easily available to an English-language audience. Many of the chapters also provide up-to-date analyses of language policy issues in particular regions or countries, focusing on recent developments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
