Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Product strategy is the key driver of business strategy and corporate success. This book brings out several important aspects of product strategy, drawing upon examples from the Indian automobile industry, which is verily the bellwether of the Indian economy. The automobile industry is not only a strategic industry economically but also an instructive industry intellectually. The industry is the cradle of modern management and is a synthesis of various functional strategies. The growth of the automobile industry or, for that matter, any consumer-facing industry lies in its ability to maintain a continuous pipeline of new and innovative products, substantive in functionality and stylistic in appearance. The automobile industry provides the perfect backdrop for discussing products as the core of the corporate business strategy. The global automobile industry, including the Indian automobile industry, is at an inflection point with portends of an unprecedented transformation. The drivers of this transformation are already seen in terms of connected vehicles, autonomous mobility, electric vehicles and digital technologies. The book, through its eighty chapters, demonstrates the synergistic interplay between technology and business, strategy and execution, innovation and inventiveness, enterprise and regulation, indigenization and globalization, structure and process, resourcing and spend, and leadership and management. This interplay would determine India’s ability to become a major player in this transformation. This book will be of interest to industry professionals, policy makers, the academic community and the general public.

Book excerpt: In the modern competitive world, finance serves as the cornerstone for all operational activities within a business. The success of a country's economic development largely hinges on the corporate sector's performance. Financial analysis involves the identification of a firm's financial strengths and weaknesses, with its nature varying according to its intended purpose. Trade creditors seek to assess the firm's ability to meet short-term obligations, whereas loan creditors are concerned with the firm's long-term solvency and survival. Management stakeholders, on the other hand, focus on the firm's profitability, which depends on its capacity to generate cash for interest payments, principal repayment, and the interplay between debt and equity in its capital structure. The Indian Automobile sector holds a formidable position in the global market. India, a renowned outsourcing hub for the automobile and auto component industry, previously received limited attention before liberalization. In 1991, a new era began with the de-licensing of the industrial sector and the subsequent opening up to 100 percent foreign direct investment (FDI) in the sector. The Indian Government's priorities underwent a significant transformation after liberalizing the country's economy, as it introduced various incentives and tax exemptions, resulting in substantial job creation. The industry seamlessly transitioned, gaining recognition from the World Trade Organization due to its extensive forward and backward linkages with the broader economy. Today, India's automobile industry offers a diverse range of products, including commercial vehicles, motorcycles, passenger cars, scooters, three-wheelers, and tractors. The increased purchasing power of the middle class, coupled with the robust economic growth of the past decade, has attracted leading foreign automobile manufacturers to our market. This has not only elevated per capita income but has also given rise to income inequality.

Book excerpt: Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2005 in the subject Business economics - Economic and Social History, grade: 1,3, Hamburg University of Technology (DepartmentofTechnologyandInnovationManagement), 19 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: The Indian economy continues to achieve stellar growth. The accepted opinion is that the process of economic liberalization that started in the late 1980's in India has come to fruition, and, combined with a strong resource base (mainly the strong knowledge base of trained engineers combined with innovation brought in by multinational companies), continues to drive the growth in recent years. The present work provides a brief background of the process of liberalization, both its successes and challenges. The work goes on to describe the effect of economic liberalization on the Indian automotive industry. The transformation of the automotive industry in the post-liberalization years is nothing short of dramatic. This transformation is discussed using different parameters, and some critical issues that face the industry in India are conjectured. The work may be taken as an introductory- to middle-level reading on the Indian automotive industry, and can form the basis of a detailed critical examination of important issues facing the industry today.

Book excerpt: Project Report from the year 2009 in the subject Business economics - Economic Policy, grade: 1.3, Hamburg University of Technology (Technology & Innovation Management), course: Project-work for the Master's in International Production Management program, language: English, abstract: The automotive industry in India has come a long way from its nascent state at the time of India's independence in 1947 to its present day dynamic form. As compared to the production of mere 4,000 vehicles in 1950, the production of the industry crossed the historic landmark of 10 million vehicles in 2006. Today, the industry produces a wide range of automobiles and auto-components catering to both the domestic as well as foreign markets. The development of the industry has been shaped by the demand on the one hand and the government interventions on the other; the influence of the latter being considerable. The evolution of India's automotive industry is identified to have occurred in four phases. In the first (1947-1965) and second phase (1966-1979), the important policies identified were related to protection, indigenisation and regulation of the industry. On the one hand, these policies helped India to build an indigenous automotive industry, while on the other it led to unsatisfactory industry performance. In the third phase (1980-1990), the single most important policy identified was the one with regard to relaxation in the means of technology acquisition. The foreign competition inducted into the industry transformed its dynamics. Lastly, in the fourth phase (1991 onwards) the liberalisation with regard to foreign investment had a significant influence on the Indian automotive industry as we see it today. This work traces the evolution of the automotive industry from its inception to present day and identifies the important policies made by the Indian government. The work also studies the influence of important policies on the development of the industry. Keywords: Governm

Book excerpt: This open access book analyses intellectual property codification and innovation governance in the development of six key industries in India and China. These industries are reflective of the innovation and economic development of the two economies, or of vital importance to them: the IT Industry; the film industry; the pharmaceutical industry; plant varieties and food security; the automobile industry; and peer production and the sharing economy. The analysis extends beyond the domain of IP law, and includes economics and policy analysis. The overarching concern that cuts through all chapters is an inquiry into why certain industries have developed in one country and not in the other, including: the role that state innovation policy and/or IP policy played in such development; the nature of the state innovation policy/IP policy; and whether such policy has been causal, facilitating, crippling, co-relational, or simply irrelevant. The book asks what India and China can learn from each other, and whether there is any possibility of synergy. The book provides a real-life understanding of how IP laws interact with innovation and economic development in the six selected economic sectors in China and India. The reader can also draw lessons from the success or failure of these sectors.

The authors contend that the current understanding of lead markets does not sufficiently explain the business practices that are born out of the intensified globalization of innovation. Lead markets are considered crucial for the global diffusion of new products and this book investigates whether sustainable lead markets can also emerge in developing economies, and if so, under which conditions. The authors question the conventional wisdom and propose updates and extensions to the lead market theory to better reflect the changing ground realities on ground.

Book excerpt: Emerging global markets like China and India have been experiencing rapid growth by reaping the fruits of high foreign direct investment (FDI) by Trans National Corporations (TNC's) in their domestic economy. This book analyses and explores various factors that attract FDI into the Indian automobile industry. To illustrate theses key driving forces, the study discusses a)Indian political regulatory environment as it directly affects the inflow of investment, b)Availability of real capabilities for extracting rents by investors, c)Changing demography: rise of the middle class and d)Cost factors: availability of cheap labor and well established industries for auto components which makes the Indian automobile industry a popular destination for new foreign investments. The study finds that even though these factors have been crucial in changing the global attractiveness of Indian auto industry, they alone may not be able to sustain investments over the long run. Changes in institutional factors like level of corruption, political stability and infrastructural enhancement are necessary so that India continues to remain a prime destination for new foreign investment

Book excerpt: The author captures the evolution of Indian industrial capitalism by extending the 'models of capitalism' and 'regulation framework'. Using principally the auto industry and anchoring the analysis to the expansion of markets, he demonstrates that the Indian state and businesses have been important institutions for creating markets. He acknowledges significant market growth, but also underscores several contradictions arising from such capitalist development. There is a wealth of data, which scholars, policymakers, and businesses will find very useful.
