Book excerpt: The depletion of natural resources as a byproduct of widespread, global economic growth has urged several entrepreneurs to think about the environment when starting or conducting business. However, several entrepreneurs and smaller-sized firms struggle with implementing environmentally conscious business practices, especially Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), which represent more than 95% of all private sector firms, and are, thus, worth studying in the context of environmental impacts. This research uses survey methods to assess and better comprehend the key drivers and barriers of green business practices by SMEs in the State of Ohio specifically. Results from this study show that a majority of the respondents reported that they have implemented green practices within their business. The two main drivers for engaging in those practices are internal motivations and the opportunity to obtain a better public image. However, respondents also mentioned a lack of capital as the central barrier to implementing green business practices. These results can be used by government and business actors, especially in Ohio, as a benchmark to consider better strategies for implementing green business techniques. Overall, this work helps to better discern best practices and ways to develop more prosperous SMEs without undermining the quality of the environment.

Book excerpt: Private enterprises in advanced economies have been learning to use information and communication technology (ICT) to innovate and transform their processes, products, services and business models, significantly improving productivity and competitiveness. Moreover, the ICT industry itself has become a major source of job creation and a contributor to economic growth and business transformation. A key question today is whether and how developing countries can learn to benefit from the ICT revolution, and what roles the government and private sector can play. Already, a number of developing countries have been inspired by the example of India and China, and are now seeking to jump on the outsourcing bandwagon. Nevertheless, with few exceptions in the developing world, little attention has been paid by policymakers and practitioners to invest systematically and proactively in ICT-enabled growth, poverty reduction and grassroots innovation. Most communities and small and medium-sized enterprises in developing countries, for example, face multiple constraints to adopting and leveraging this general purpose technology, and lack the capabilities for maximizing its potential. In "Enabling Enterprise Transformation", Nagy Hanna draws on his rich experience of over 35 years at the World Bank and other aid agencies as a development strategist and ICT policy expert, the most current research, and best practices from around the world to provide practical tools for promoting economic and social transformation through ICT. He assesses various initiatives to develop and diffuse ICT, such as innovation funds, incubators, parks, public-private partnerships, and comprehensive promotion programs. He argues for the strategic options now open for developing countries to participate in ICT production, to deploy ICT to transform industries and services, and to leverage ICT as a new national infrastructure for improving the business environment and enhancing the competitiveness of the whole economy. The challenge for leaders in developing countries is to create such social and institutional dynamics for learning about ICT use and adaptation at many levels. HGFs bezeichnen dabei Unternehmen, die in mindestens drei aufeinanderfolgenden Jahren mindestens 20% Umsatzwachstum aufweisen können. Das Phänomen des schnellen Wachstums ist dabei auch aus Unternehmenssicht von großem Interesse. Beispielsweise haben solche Unternehmen einen vereinfachten Zugang zu Finanzierungsquellen und potentiellen Mitarbeitern. Dennoch wurde die unternehmerische Perspektive auf HGFs weitestgehend vernachlässigt. Die Literatur gibt bisher kaum Antworten darauf, welche Faktoren schnelles Wachstum treiben oder hemmen und mit welchen Praktiken schnell-wachsende Unternehmen diese Faktoren nutzen oder überkommen. Dabei fehlte es bisher insbesondere an Erhebungen, die sich der spezifischen Gruppe kleiner und mittelgroßer Technologieunternehmen in Deutschland widmet. Die Masterarbeit widmet sich daher der Frage, welche Faktoren schnelles Unternehmenswachstum treiben oder bremsen. Die Arbeit wendet eine Kombination aus induktiver und deduktiver Herangehensweise an. Dazu leitet die Arbeit zunächst deduktiv Treiber und Hemmnisse aus einer umfangreichen Literaturanalyse von 120 wissenschaftlichen Artikeln und Büchern ab. Um neuartige Erkenntnisse für die Gruppe deutscher Technologieunternehmen zu erheben, wurden Interviews mit Gründern und CEOs von 21 schnell wachsenden Unternehmen durchgeführt und mittels Software-gestützter Inhaltsanalyse ausgewertet. Die Arbeit trägt in mehrfacher Hinsicht zur bestehenden Forschung bei. Erstens generiert sie eine umfassende Klassifizierung der bestehenden Literatur hinsichtlich der Faktoren und Praktiken schnellen Unternehmenswachstums. Zweitens, generiert die Arbeit generiert aufschlussreiche empirische Daten und entwickelt ein Wachstumsmodell für schnell-wachsende Technologieunternehmen. Weiterhin ordnet sie den identifizierten Wachstumsphasen die entsprechenden Treiber, Hemmnisse und Unternehmenspraktiken zu. Zuletzt generiert die Arbeit ein Set an Propositionen zur weiteren Untersuchung und entwickelt ein Instrument, welches es Managern erlaubt, das Wachstumspotential ihres Unternehmens zu planen und mit konkreten Maßnahmen zu planen.
