Book excerpt: As I sit and observe the way the young, the middle age and yes some of the elderly women dress for church, God has inspired me to write about how we the Christian Woman should dress. Yes, we should feel free to wear whatever our hearts so desire, but there is a way that we should enter before the presence of the Lord. The Bible lets us know that we are of Royal Priesthood and that we are children of the King. There is a way we the Christian Women should present ourselves before the King. There are certain guide-lines that we must follow. We dont just go before the King in any ole thing and we must worship in the beauty of holiness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Beauty of Holiness: The Caroline Divines and Their Writings offers an expansive and detailed portrait of the continued maturation of Anglican theology and devotion in the central half of the seventeenth century. The Caroline Divines have long been hailed as the patrons of an Anglican ‘golden age’. Their emphasis upon liturgical renewal and development, like their emphases upon learning and piety, have had a pervasive influence on the Anglican ethos that extends down to our own day. The Beauty of Holiness includes selections from key figures such as Lancelot Andrewes, John Cosin, and Jeremy Taylor, but also expands the canon of Caroline divinity to include lay writings, some of which were published posthumously. Traditional topics such as sacramental theology and private devotion are complimented by readings on poetry as a spiritual discipline, natural theology, and the importance of family prayers. Chapters survey diverse facets of Anglican orthodoxy such as liturgical practice, the cult of King Charles the Martyr, and defenses of the celebration of Christmas, while an introductory essay sets these developments within the historical context. The Beauty of Holiness thus functions as both an introduction to the Anglican past and a catechism for the Anglican present.
Book Synopsis Beauty and Holiness by : James Alfred Martin, Jr.
Download or read book Beauty and Holiness written by James Alfred Martin, Jr. and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this broad historical and critical overview based on a lifetime of scholarship, James Alfred Martin, Jr., examines the development of the concepts of beauty and holiness as employed in theories of aesthetics and of religion. The injunction in the Book of Psalms to "worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness" addressed a tradition that has comprehended holiness primarily in terms of ethical righteousness--a conception that has strongly influenced Western understandings of religion. As the author points out, however, the Greek forbears of Western thought, as well as many Eastern traditions, were and are more broadly concerned with the pursuit of beauty, truth, and goodness as ideals of human excellence, that is, with the "holiness of beauty." In this work Martin describes a philosophical stance that should prove to be most productive for the dialogue between aesthetics and religion. Beginning with the treatment of beauty and holiness in Hebrew, Greek, and classical Christian thought, the author traces the emergence of modern theories of aesthetics and religion in the Enlightenment. He then outlines the role of aesthetics in the theories of religion proposed by Otto, Eliade, van der Leeuw, and Tillich, in the cultural anthropology of Geertz, and in the thought of Santayana, Dewey, Whitehead, Heidegger, and Wittgenstein. In a global context Martin explores the relation of aesthetic theory to religious thought in the traditions of India, China, and Japan and concludes with reflections on the viability of modern aesthetic and religious theory in the light of contemporary cultural and methodological pluralism. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Marys: Or, the Beauty of Female Holiness This "Closet Manual" has a twofold peculiarity. It is addressed exclusively to Females; because the author believes that general appeals on the subject of Sin and Holiness are not well adapted to the conscience of the sex, nor so faithful as they seem. Its style, too, is occasionally peculiar; because he thinks that Parable and Allegory are legitimate weapons in "the defence of the Gospel." He has, therefore, attempted to give Oriental forms to old truths, whenever he found it difficult to say, in ordinary language, all that he wished to suggest to the female mind. He has also given that prominence to "the beauty of holiness," which it has in Scripture, in common with the nature and necessity of holiness. This plan and purpose will be adhered to in the succeeding volumes of The Lady's Closet Library. The Author's appeal is to the Mothers and Daughters in British "Israel: " they must be both his patrons and judges, if this well-meant experiment succeed.
