It is not a compendium Of statistics. Neither is it a record Of the actual performance Of specific dredges Of all kinds and under all conditions; nor yet a compilation Of dredging cost data. Such information is already minutely available in the Annual Reports of the Chief of Engineers, U. S. Army, and in the records Of the various departments of commonwealths and municipalities controlling dredging operations in their respective localities. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Engineering Practice and Education Taking up next the ports and the waterways, we find that, their boats being small, the works that they needed, and that they therefore executed, would not look large from our modern point of view; but, considering the times, some of them were magnificent pieces of engineering. As to ports, when they could they built them in a river, erecting quays of stone or wood. They took advantage of the shelter afforded by natural features, and built protect ing breakwaters when they needed them. When they could reach dry land to build upon they always did So, but when not, they sunk large stones, or cradles filled with masonry, locating them by means of divers, or else they built dikes, and ran in liquid concrete, which, on solidifying, formed, as it were, a solid rock. They had a great many ports all along the Mediterranean. They had, however, no efficient system of dredging, and their ports were always silting up. Of course, their navigable rivers formed the natural com. Mercial highways, as indeed they did everywhere before the introduction of railroads; hence, they carried out such improvements as they could, and such as were needed at thetime, by removing obstructions from the river beds and by building sea walls. It has been the author's intention first to describe the principal types of dredge in such manner as to impart a fundamental working knowledge of their construction and operation, and then to consider, in concise form, the usual problems confronting the engineer in the conception and accomplishment of dredging projects. Because of the fact that most literature upon the subject, having been presented in the form of papers and articles in the technical periodicals, is not only not readily available, but incomplete, in that each as a rule treats only of one particular phase of the subject, it is thought that a need exists for a comprehensive treatise, which should be helpful alike to the student and engineer. To fill this want has been the author's objective. The importance of the subject, while not always apparent to the layman, is obviously paramount, involving the expenditure of many millions of dollars annually for the necessities of commercial life. Book excerpt: Without proper hydraulic fill and suitable specialised equipment, many major infrastructure projects such as ports, airports, roads, industrial or housing projects could not be realised. Yet comprehensive information about hydraulic fill is difficult to find. This thoroughly researched book, written by noted experts, takes the reader step-by-step through the complex development of a hydraulic fill project. Up-to-date and in-depth, this manual will enable the client and his consultant to understand and properly plan a reclamation project. It provides adequate guidelines for design and quality control and allows the contractor to work within known and generally accepted guidelines and reasonable specifications. The ultimate goal is to create better-designed, more adequately specified and less costly hydraulic fill projects. The Hydraulic Fill Manual covers a range of topics such as: • The development cycle of a hydraulic fill project • How technical data are acquired and applied • The construction methods applicable to a wide variety of equipment and soil conditions, the capabilities of dredging equipment and the techniques of soil improvement • How to assess the potentials of a borrow pit • Essential environment assessment issues • The design of the hydraulic fill mass, including the boundary conditions for the design, effects of the design on its surroundings, the strength and stiffness of the fill mass, density, sensitivity to liquefaction, design considerations for special fill material such as silts, clays and carbonate sands, problematic subsoils and natural hazards • Quality control and monitoring of the fill mass and its behaviour after construction. This manual is of particular interest to clients, consultants, planning and consenting authorities, environmental advisors, contractors and civil, geotechnical, hydraulic and coastal engineers involved in dredging and land reclamation projects.

Book excerpt: In this groundbreaking book, Adrian Bejan takes the recurring patterns in nature—trees, tributaries, air passages, neural networks, and lightning bolts—and reveals how a single principle of physics, the constructal law, accounts for the evolution of these and many other designs in our world. Everything—from biological life to inanimate systems—generates shape and structure and evolves in a sequence of ever-improving designs in order to facilitate flow. River basins, cardiovascular systems, and bolts of lightning are very efficient flow systems to move a current—of water, blood, or electricity. Likewise, the more complex architecture of animals evolve to cover greater distance per unit of useful energy, or increase their flow across the land. Such designs also appear in human organizations, like the hierarchical “flowcharts” or reporting structures in corporations and political bodies. All are governed by the same principle, known as the constructal law, and configure and reconfigure themselves over time to flow more efficiently. Written in an easy style that achieves clarity without sacrificing complexity, Design in Nature is a paradigm-shifting book that will fundamentally transform our understanding of the world around us.
