Book excerpt: The dragons that have been kept in sanctuaries want their freedom—and their revenge—and the world’s only hope is the reformation of the ancient order of Dragonwatch in this New York Times bestselling first novel of a new sequel series to Fablehaven from author Brandon Mull. In the hidden dragon sanctuary of Wyrmroost, Celebrant the Just, King of the Dragons, plots his revenge. He has long seen the sanctuaries as prisons, and he wants nothing more than to overthrow his captors and return the world to the Age of Dragons, when he and his kind ruled and reigned without borders. The time has come to break free and reclaim his power. No one person is capable of stopping Celebrant and his dragon horde. It will take the ancient order of Dragonwatch to gather again if there is any chance of saving the world from destruction. In ancient times, Dragonwatch was a group of wizards, enchantresses, dragon slayers, and others who originally confined the majority of dragons into sanctuaries. But nearly all of the original Dragonwatch members are gone, and so the wizard Agad reaches out to Grandpa Sorenson for help. As Kendra and Seth confront this new danger, they must draw upon all their skills, talents, and knowledge as only they have the ability to function together as a powerful dragon tamer. Together they must battle against forces with superior supernatural powers and breathtaking magical abilities. How will the epic dragon showdown end? Will dragons overthrow humans and change the world as we know it?
Book Synopsis Dragonslayers by : Joseph A. McCullough
Download or read book Dragonslayers written by Joseph A. McCullough and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2013-03-20 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With its fiery breath, scaly armour, and baleful, malevolent stare, the dragon became the ultimate symbol of evil and corruption in European folklore and mythology. Often serving as a stand-in for Satan, or the power of evil gods, dragons spread death and hopelessness throughout the land. Only heroes of uncommon valour, courageousness, and purity could hope to battle these monsters and emerge victorious. Those that did became legends. They became dragonslayers. The list of dragonslayers is small, but it is filled with great and legendary names. Hercules, Beowulf, Sigfried, and Saint George all battled to the death with dragons. Other heroes such as Cadmus, founder of the city of Thebes, Dieudonné de Gozon, the Knight of Rhodes, and the Russian warrior Dobrynya Nikitch might be less well known to western readers, but also fought and defeated dragons. This book retells the greatest legends of this select group of warriors, while examining the myth of the dragonslayer in a historical, mythological, and even theological context.

Book excerpt: Listen! For I sing of Owen Thorskard: valiant of heart, hopeless at algebra, last in a long line of legendary dragon slayers. Though he had few years and was not built for football, he stood between the town of Trondheim and creatures that threatened its survival. There have always been dragons. As far back as history is told, men and women have fought them, loyally defending their villages. Dragon slaying was a proud tradition. But dragons and humans have one thing in common: an insatiable appetite for fossil fuels. From the moment Henry Ford hired his first dragon slayer, no small town was safe. Dragon slayers flocked to cities, leaving more remote areas unprotected. Such was Trondheim's fate until Owen Thorskard arrived. At sixteen, with dragons advancing and his grades plummeting, Owen faced impossible odds—armed only with a sword, his legacy, and the classmate who agreed to be his bard. Listen! I am Siobhan McQuaid. I alone know the story of Owen, the story that changes everything. Listen!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A factory worker is kidnapped to help an elf reforge a broken spear, in this trilogy opener by the bestselling author of the Legend of Drizzt series. Gary Leger is desperate for adventure. Daydreaming is all that keeps him from going nuts while working a dead-end job in a plastics factory. The next best thing is burying himself in a good fantasy novel, and he spends much of his free time reading in the woods behind his house. That’s when adventure finds him. Or rather, that’s when he’s hit with a tranquilizer arrow . . . When Gary comes to, he’s still in the woods—but in a world inhabited by creatures from his favorite novels, like a pixie and a leprechaun. There’s also an elf on a dangerous life-quest who requires Gary’s assistance. As soon as Gary finishes helping him, he can go home. He simply needs to complete the task . . . while surviving encounters with trolls, an ice-hag, a dragon, and a sorceress bent on stopping them at all costs. This first novel in the Spearwielder’s Tale trilogy is a great choice for fans of Alan Dean Foster’s Spellsinger books and Terry Brooks’s Shannara series. Praise for The Woods Out Back “Written as a light-hearted adventure, the book works because the reader sees the world of Faerie through Gary’s eyes and Faerie is just as new to him as it is to the reader. . . . The book’s fast-paced, good-humored nature draws the reader in and makes the world of Faerie a fine place to visit—good thing there are two more installments!” —SF Site

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dragons are rising... and behind the beasts is a sinister group, led by the will of their ancestors, waiting for centuries, until the time to rise. The four Dragon Lords lurk in shadow and mystery, guiding events to bring about their rise to power and the domination of the known world. Their power grows with each passing day. The terror of their vicious beasts fills every land with fear and darkness. But behind the scenes, carefully hidden, an unlikely group of brave souls rises as well. Their aim: to destroy the Dragon Lords and their fearsome beasts before every land is subjected to their evil. Led by a young man haunted by a childhood encounter with a great red dragon, each of them is destined to discover that danger not only rises from the Dragon Masters, but also from their own sordid pasts. They know the danger. But they also know what will happen to their families and the land they love if the evil of the Dragon Lords is not stopped. FROM THE AUTHOR: These books come from stories I told to my older three kids when they were small. Bedtime, road trips, and many other times I remember hearing kids ask, "Dad, can you tell us a Hon story?" I did... and they finally convinced me to put them into book form, although these stories are much more than they heard in our bedtime tales. I'm a retired pastor, turned author and internet entrepreneur. I love my Lord, my family, and my life. I'd love to get to know you, too. Download or read book Dragonslayer written by Jay Lockenour and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2021-04-15 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this fascinating biography of the infamous ideologue Erich Ludendorff, Jay Lockenour complicates the classic depiction of this German World War I hero. Erich Ludendorff created for himself a persona that secured his place as one of the most prominent (and despicable) Germans of the twentieth century. With boundless energy and an obsession with detail, Ludendorff ascended to power and solidified a stable, public position among Germany's most influential. Between 1914 and his death in 1937, he was a war hero, a dictator, a right-wing activist, a failed putschist, a presidential candidate, a publisher, and a would-be prophet. He guided Germany's effort in the Great War between 1916 and 1918 and, importantly, set the tone for a politics of victimhood and revenge in the postwar era. Dragonslayer explores Ludendorff's life after 1918, arguing that the strange or unhinged personal traits most historians attribute to mental collapse were, in fact, integral to Ludendorff's political strategy. Lockenour asserts that Ludendorff patterned himself, sometimes consciously and sometimes unconsciously, on the dragonslayer of Germanic mythology, Siegfried—hero of the epic poem The Niebelungenlied and much admired by German nationalists. The symbolic power of this myth allowed Ludendorff to embody many Germans' fantasies of revenge after their defeat in 1918, keeping him relevant to political discourse despite his failure to hold high office or cultivate a mass following after World War I. Lockenour reveals the influence that Ludendorff's postwar career had on Germany's political culture and radical right during this tumultuous era. Dragonslayer is a tale as fabulist as fiction.

Book Synopsis Dragons and Dragonslayers by : Tim Chester
Download or read book Dragons and Dragonslayers written by Tim Chester and published by . This book was released on 2020-01-07 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This imaginatively illustrated book includes eight dragon myths from China, Greece, Japan, England, Iceland, and even America--and explains why we are telling these kinds of stories. This collection tells story after exciting story about dragons. You have probably heard some of them, but some of them will surprise and excite you. We don't just hear the stories of St. George, Perseus, and Thor. We also learn the story of John Lambtown, a man who goes fishing, catches a tiny dragon that quickly grows to epic proportions, and can only be defeated with a bizarre suit of armor. We laugh at the story of the tiny storm god Susannoo who outwits a dragon the size of eight hills with rice wine. We shudder as we hear about the fight of the red and white dragons of Wales and the king that cleverly trapped them. We even get to hear about a dragon that terrorized Indians in Illinois. Each of these stories resonates with us because of something deep in the human imagination that loves to hear about fighting fierce dragons. In the Garden of Eden, it was a dragon that tricked our first parents, and at the end of the Bible, the book of Revelation, the dragon is identified as Satan. Pastor and author Tim Chester explains what these stories mean, and how we should live in the world as a result. Canonball Books is the children's imprint of Canon Press. At Canonball, we believe stories are soul food, so you can expect excitement, danger, loyalty, virtue, and family in your Canonball books. Feed your kids the right books!
