Download or read book A Time of Sifting written by Paul Peucker and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2015-06-19 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the end of the 1740s, the Moravians, a young and rapidly expanding radical-Pietist movement, experienced a crisis soon labeled the Sifting Time. As Moravian leaders attempted to lead the church away from the abuses of the crisis, they also tried to erase the memory of this controversial and embarrassing period. Archival records were systematically destroyed, and official histories of the church only dealt with this period in general terms. It is not surprising that the Sifting Time became both a taboo and an enigma in Moravian historiography. In A Time of Sifting, Paul Peucker provides the first book-length, in-depth look at the Sifting Time and argues that it did not consist of an extreme form of blood-and-wounds devotion, as is often assumed. Rather, the Sifting Time occurred when Moravians began to believe that the union with Christ could be experienced not only during marital intercourse but during extramarital sex as well. Peucker shows how these events were the logical consequence of Moravian teachings from previous years. As the nature of the crisis became evident, church leaders urged the members to revert to their earlier devotion of the blood and wounds of Christ. By returning to this earlier phase, the Moravians lost their dynamic character and became more conservative. It was at this moment that the radical-Pietist Moravians of the first half of the eighteenth century reinvented themselves as a noncontroversial evangelical denomination.

This book was released on 2018-05-15 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Handbook of Denominations in the United States has long been the gold standard for reference works about religious bodies in America. The purpose of this Handbook is to provide accurate and objective information about the most significant Christian traditions and denominations in the United States today. It contains descriptions of over 200 distinct Christian denominations as well as overviews of the several major Christian traditions to which they belong—based on shared historical and theological roots and commitments. The information for each denomination has been provided by the religious organizations themselves and focuses on the denominations' doctrines, statistics, and histories. The 14th edition is completely updated with current statistics, new denominations, and recent trends. The book has been made more useful and manageable by moving very small groups into broader articles while giving more detail and description to the large and influential denominations.
Book Synopsis Blood on the Border by : Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz
Download or read book Blood on the Border written by Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz and published by South End Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With Blood on the Border: A Memoir of the Contra War, Dunbar-Ortiz presents the third volume in her critically acclaimed memoir. In this long-awaited book, she vividly recounts on-the-ground memories of the contra war in Nicaragua, chronicling the US-sponsored terror inflicted on the people of Nicaragua following their 1981 election of the socialist Sandinistas, ousting Reagan darling and vicious dictator Somoza. The war's opening salvo was the bombing of a Nicaraguan plane in Mexico City by US-backed contras, the plane Dunbar-Ortiz would have been on were it not for a delay. This disarming closeness to the fraught history of the US/Nicaraguan relationship shapes Dunbar-Ortiz's narrative, bringing uncomfortably present the decade-long dirty war that the Reagan administration pursued in Nicaragua against civilian and soldier alike. As with her first two memoirs, in Blood on the Border, Dunbar-Ortiz seamlessly connects the dots not only between the personal and the political, but between recent history and our present moment. Unlike the many commentators who view the September 11, 2001, attacks as the start of the so-called "war on terror," Dunbar-Ortiz offers firsthand testimony on battles waged much earlier. While her rich political analysis of this history bears the mark of a trained historian, she also writes from her perspective as an intrepid activist who spent months at a time throughout the 1980s in the war-torn country, especially in the remote Mosquitia region, where the indigenous Miskitu people were viciously assailed and nearly wiped out by CIA-trained contra mercenaries. She makes painfully clear the connections between what many US Americans only remember vaguely as the Iran-Contra "affair" and current US aggression in the Americas, the Middle East, and around the world. Clearly, this will be a book valuable not only for students of Latin American history, but also for anyone who is interested in better understanding the violent turmoil of our world today.

Book Synopsis A History of the Moravian Church by : J. E. Hutton
Download or read book A History of the Moravian Church written by J. E. Hutton and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2023-12-01 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A History of the Moravian Church" written by J. E. (John Edwin) Hutton is a definitive and scholarly exploration of the Moravian Church's rich and fascinating history. This work demonstrates Hutton's commitment to the study of religious movements and their impact on society. Hutton's book provides a complete history of the Moravian Church, officially known as the Unitas Fratrum, from its beginnings in the 15th century to its ongoing influence in the twentieth. The Moravian Church has a distinct history that may be traced back to Jan Hus, a reformer who challenged religious customs of his day. In "A History of the Moravian Church," Hutton methodically researches and tells the tale of this extraordinary Christian denomination's development, beliefs, and customs. He investigates their concentration on missionary work, their particular community life, and their substantial contributions to the history of Protestantism in general. One of Hutton's enduring qualities is his ability to make difficult historical and theological issues understandable to readers. He offers insightful insights into the Moravian Church's theology, spirituality, and impact on the larger Christian world.
