Book excerpt: Read Sid Jaconson's posts on the Penguin Blog Two legends of the comic book industry bring to life the story of gore and lust that inspired Dracula. Vlad the man had a devilish streak-a vicious temper, a passion for women, and a thirst for revenge. Vlad the ruler was a true devil-a relentless torturer, a brutal murderer, and a paranoid leader whose megalomania would be his own undoing. Responsible for the merciless deaths of thousands, this savage 15th century ruler earned himself the moniker Vlad the Impaler. His bloody reign struck terror into the hearts of his disciples and inspired generations of vampire myths-most famously Bram Stoker's ghoulish protagonist, Dracula. However that beloved bloodsucker doesn't hold a candle to the real-life fiend whose brutal treachery has made him immortal.

Book excerpt: In 1456 the young Vlad Dracula, "The Impaler" ascends for the second time to the throne and sets out to consolidate his power through a series of gruesome retaliations against his internal and external enemies. Some of his actions reach such levels of cruelty that they will become the basis of the vampire legend. His personal physician and advisor, Yakov of Bruges, is a witness and a confessor of sorts. Yakov seeks occasionally the advice of his friend Johannes van Wesel. The discussions between Yakov and Dracula and Johannes' comments offer an intimate insight into the real Dracula's mind and soul. While visiting Romania, American psychologist, Alex Stevenson, stumbles accidentally upon evidence of the correspondence between Yakov and Johannes and helped by his guide, Tudor, starts searching for the letters. In doing so he unwittingly alerts other parties: a shadowy nationalist group known as "the Guardians" and powerful moneyed interests involved in building a Dracula theme park. Neither group is above using violence to get what they want. The letters are priceless advertising for the backers of the theme park and the nationalists want them for their own political purposes. In addition, there is also a hint of hidden treasure, so the chase is on. The letters are the link between the two storylines, and the narrative alternates between them. The story of Dracula and Yakov, based on a thorough research of the historical record, follows the Impaler's second and third reign through battles, palace plots, conspiracies, assassination attempts and political intrigue. Dracula's main rivals are the Turkish Sultan Mehmed and his scheming bisexual lover, Radu the Handsome, who is Dracula's brother. His somewhat unreliable allies are King Mathias of Hungary and his cousin, Stephen the Great, Prince of neighboring Moldavia. Dracula succeeds in defeating Mehmed's huge army using guerilla warfare, a scorched earth strategy and the discouraging macabre spectacle of the "forest of the impaled" but he loses the throne to Radu. After 12 years of exile and intrigue he succeeds in becoming ruler once more but he is assassinated shortly afterwards. Yakov takes his body to the final resting place; and his last letter reveals the location of Dracula's graveDracula comes through as a complex character, a modern man in the Middle Ages, an ambivalent and in some ways tragic figure rather than a monster. He is a great warrior and politician, who can be inspiring but is also devious, paranoid, ruthless and devoid of guilt, as well as an unhappy human being, lonely and unable of intimacy. Yakov has great compassion for him but is also aware of his dark side.Alex' search for the letters takes him to the city of Brasov, were he meets the Keeper, curator of a museum and an expert in old documents. By now he and Tudor are aware that they are followed but are not successful in shaking off their pursuers. Guided by Keeper, the trail takes them to Leuven, Belgium and then to Padua, Italy. They acquire new allies and together overcome several attempts to intimidate, harm or compromise them. After they finally find the letters, they return to Romania to uncover Dracula's grave, an important site to both of the groups that have followed them. The others are expecting them and they clash at the grave site, leading to the explosive climax.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vlad the Impaler The character Count Dracula is well-known throughout the world. He is a dark, seductive, pale man wearing a cape. His gaze is quite literally captivating, and he has the strength of ten men. The story, written by Bram Stoker in 1897, has been retold hundreds of times, but is there a historical figure upon whom the character is based? Is there really a Dracula? Many scholars argue that Vlad III Dracula, also known as Vlad the Impaler, is the real Dracula. He was known in western Europe for his cruelty, most especially his penchant for impaling his victims. He is said to have killed somewhere between 40,000 and 100,000 people during his crusade to stop the Ottoman Empire from expanding into eastern Europe. He was equally harsh on the people he ruled and is said to have taken great pleasure in torturing his victims. Inside you will read about... - Vlad's early life and family - Rise to power: Vlad's first reign - War with the Ottomans, Vlad's main reign - Vlad's imprisonment, third reign, and death - Vlad Dracula's legacy - Vlad the Impaler in fiction: Count Dracula His story, however, is much more complicated than the oft-reported details of his atrocities would imply. He lived in a time of conflict where many were equally as cruel, and he is viewed as a hero in Romania where he is remembered as a protector of his people. This eBook tells the story of his life and times, and discusses his connection to the fictional Count Dracula, in a succinct, compelling manner, which makes for an entertaining read that is packed with historical information.

Book excerpt: In October of 1448, Vlad is a month shy of his seventeenth birthday when he leads a cavalry two thousand strong to the wooden walls of Tirgoviste. They are the last obstacle preventing him from reclaiming the throne held by his father. Determined to be his father's son in every way possible, Vlad finally walks through the open gates where, in due course, he plans to free himself of the Turks and declare himself "Son of the Dragon"--Dracula. At last, he is prince. Dracula presides over Wallachia, a principality caught between two voracious predators: the kingdom of Hungary and the Ottoman, better known as the Turks. Bitter at God and left wondering if He even exists, Dracula faithfully follows his life's purpose to free Wallachia, battling criminals and factions who attempt to break him with overwhelming force and terror. But as a sultan watches the feud from a distance and gloats, Dracula eventually turns his enemies' tactics against them, finds love, is taken prisoner, and stands at a crossroads where he is faced with an agonizing choice: renounce his past, or embrace his fate. In this historical novel, a fifteenth-century warlord cursed by his church and torn between his code of ethics and his humanity evolves into a legend who soon proves that he is neither a man nor a prince, but something beyond both.

Book excerpt: Transylvanian mystique and legendary hauntedness surround the most infamous Bram Stoker’s protagonists, forming a legacy that allows the myth to continue into modern times, maintaining a cultish following, yet broadening to a general fascination. Intrigued by evil and gore, Stoker developed a literary presence that was effortlessly translated to screen by the likes of Murnau, Bela Lugosi, Christopher Lee and Francis Ford Coppola. Dracula became such an obsession as it embodied a taboo subject matter: the desire for blood and sex. Filled with extraordinary pictures of the Count, his literary companions, and the movie idols, this is a treasure only to be read by daylight!
