The book is designed not just for use by diplomats, officials and scholars but also by other researchers, writers, journalists, teachers and students. The year 1994 was a remarkably eventful one for the United Nations and in the conduct of international relations. This volume of the Yearbook details the activities of the United Nations, its many organs, agencies and programmes, working together to rekindle a new form of multilateral cooperation for a better world. It records the diverse and globe-encompassing activities of the United Nations and its enduring efforts to deal with the world's pressing concerns, particularly matters of international peace and security, disarmament, human rights, the settlement of regional conflicts, economic and social development, the preservation of the environment, control of drugs and narcotic substance abuse, crime prevention, adequate shelter, youth and the ageing and humanitarian assistance for refugees as well as disaster relief.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than a decade, The State of the World's Children report from UNICEF has become the best-known and most widely used of all United Nations publications. Published in forty languages, it is distributed to media in all countries at the year's end, and has become both a record and a catalyst for the movement to promote the kind of development that benefits today's children--and tomorrow's world. This 1995 report chronicles the advances made in child health over the last four years. It is predicted that because of changes in governmental policy and practices throughout the world, approximately two million less children will die in 1995 than in 1990, one half million fewer children will be disabled, blinded, crippled, or mentally retarded, and tens of millions will be spared the insidious sabotage wrought on their mental and physical development by malnutrition.

Illuminating the limits and possibilities of preventive diplomacy, Abiodun Williams traces the course of UN peacekeeping in Macedonia-the vital link in the stability of the southern Balkans-from 1992 to 1999. As he shows, the Macedonia case has important lessons for using preventive action to forestall other threats to international peace and security.

Book excerpt: As a contribution to the World Summit for Social Development, this UNICEF report argues that protecting and investing in children must be seen as integral to economic and social development and discusses the progress made to that end following the 1990 World Summit for Children. Chapter 1 discusses the effect of continued economic and social marginalization of the poorest nations and communities on the normal development of millions of children. Chapter 2 looks at the practical progress made by the international community in achieving the goals set at the 1990 World Summit for Children, and finds that a majority of the goals are likely to be met by a majority of the developing nations. The third chapter proposes that the task facing the World Summit for Social Development is to break down the broader challenges of today's development consensus into do-able propositions and to begin mobilizing the necessary support for their achievement. Chapter 4 recognizes the need to bring about more fundamental changes to implement the development consensus and discusses the obstacles posed by economic and political vested interests. The last chapter identifies the unfinished business of the 20th century to be the restructuring of societies in the interests of the many rather than the few, and calls upon the involvement of large numbers of people for fundamental change. A section of all-country statistical tables for basic indicators, nutrition, health, education, demographic indicators, economic indicators, women, basic indicators on less populous countries, the rate of progress, and regional summaries, concludes the report. Listings of country groupings, definitions and main sources are included. (BAC)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book in English to examine local government and authority in Vietnam since the country's reunification in 1975. Six chapters emphasize particular villages and districts in different parts of the country, one examines a ward in Hanoi, another focuses on Ho Chi Minh City, and one compares leaders in several provinces. To contextualize conditions today, two chapters analyse local government in Vietnam's long history. The opening chapter synthesizes the findings in this book with those in other studies by researchers inside and outside Vietnam.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did the EU, US, and Canada decide and implement their electoral assistance in the Palestinian Territories (PT)? Why did the EU, the US, and Canada embark on assisting the elections in the PT, and what factors influenced their electoral assistance? What lessons can be learned for other countries approaching elections after a long period of conflict? This book answers these questions and charts the process of electoral assistance with an in-depth analysis of each transatlantic actor's electoral assistance in the PT. It shows that, despite the many institutional and operational differences between the EU, the US, and Canada, the three actors do share common interests and influencing factors which often unify their response. The book also reveals the limitations facing electoral assistance and the implications of this on the sustainability, clarity, consistency, and responsiveness of the policy. In this systematic, comparative analysis of European, American and Canadian efforts to assist elections and transform governance in conflict zones Rouba Al-Fattal greatly advances the empirical knowledge of electoral assistance and provides the first steps needed to reform electoral assistance policy to cope with the challenges of the twenty-first century.

Book excerpt: This popular text mixes classic theory and research on urban politics with the most recent developments and data in urban and metropolitan affairs. Its balanced and realistic approach helps students understand the nature of urban politics and the difficulty of finding effective "solutions" in a suburban and global age. The ninth edition has been thoroughly rewritten and updated with a continued focus on economic development and race, plus renewed attention to globalization, gentrification, and changing demographics. Boxed case studies of prominent recent and current urban development efforts provide material for class discussion, and concluding material demonstrates the tradeoff between more "ideal" and more "pragmatic" urban politics. Key changes in this edition include: Every chapter has been thoroughly updated and rewritten. The Ninth Edition reflects the most current census data and the newest trends in such areas as the "new immigration," suburbanization, gentrification, and big-city revivals; There is coverage of the big-city pension crisis and politics in Stockton, Detroit, and other cities facing possible bankruptcy; A brand-new opening chapter introduces the concepts of the Global City, the Entertainment City, and the Bankrupt City; New photos and boxes appear throughout the book; Increased coverage of policies for sustainable urban development.
