Download or read book Down the Creek written by Janet Hamilton and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Down the Creek is a memoir. The stories that have been in my mind since childhood. The first pages, written on yellow-lined legal pads, were first penned more than tirty years ago. Through the years I graduated from handwriting to a portable Smith Corona typewriter and finally arrived a few years ago into the modern world of technology and began using the computer. How I ever managed to handwrite or use a typewriter is now beyond my imagination. My story is based on my maternal grandmothers life and that of her nine children. I was always fascinated by the stories I heard through the years. Some of the later ones I personally witnessed. I always felt that one day I must write it all down. This book is fiction based on true stories. Names of people and many of the geographic areas have been changed. Dates and events have been moved at the writers discretion to make the story more readable. However, the skeleton of the story is very accurate. Many small details are simply from the writers imagination, written the way I thought those actual events would have or should have occurred.

Download or read book Down on Mahans Creek written by Benjamin G. Rader and published by University of Arkansas Press. This book was released on 2017-02-15 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Down on Mahans Creek, Benjamin Rader provides a fascinating look at a neighborhood in the Missouri Ozarks from the early nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century. He explores the many ways in which Mahans Creek, though remote, was never completely isolated or self-sufficient. The residents were deeply affected by the Civil War, and the arrival of the railroad and the timber boom in the 1890s propelled the community into modern times, creating a more fast-paced and consumer-oriented way of life and a new moral sensibility. During the Great Depression the creek’s residents returned to some of the older values for survival. After World War II, modern technology changed their lives again, causing a movement away from the countryside and to the nearby small towns. Down on Mahans Creek tells the dynamic story of this distinctive neighborhood navigating the push and pull of the old and new ways of life.

There's a beautiful old inn for sale along the Little River that will do perfectly. Of course, Grace's family is scandalized. After all, she's a middle-aged widow! And as a career homemaker, she's always been available for babysitting, chauffeuring, and generally being the peacemaker among her grown children. Has Grace lost her mind? She begins to wonder the same thing once she finds herself attracted to the local ladies' man. But the surprises don't stop there. . . To further complicate her move, Grace's daughter, Margaret, has grudgingly come to live with her. Having just graduated from college, remote Townsend is not where she envisions her future. Yet the handsome young minister next door is convinced he and Margaret are meant for each other. As life choices abound, soon both women will discover that the biggest decisions require confidence, a sense of humor--and a deep, abiding faith. It describes the old traditional method dog hunters of the South used to supply food for their families. It is more than just a true hunting account. It speaks about the character and love of a traditional Southern family moved from the land they loved by eminent domain to serve the nation in a time of war. It speaks about values long lost in a modern selfish and indulgent society. It speaks about the powerful influence a man of character can have for his children and his grandchildren. The book introduces this family and its setting for a memorial in the appendix.
