Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doubling on Woodwinds was envisioned as a work plan for woodwind players that allows for a more efficient daily practice of their doublings. Whether your primary instrument is flute, clarinet or saxophone, this book will help you improve your skills with each instrument. Woodwind players are expected to be proficient with multiple instruments in the family, and the process of getting acquainted with them is often more tedious and cumbersome than it need be. This book is not intended to replace traditional method books for each of the instruments, but rather to complement them. My intention is to integrate the practice of several instruments and turn that into the learning process of one larger subject: the woodwind family. We will address only the most commonly used doublings in the woodwind family; flute, saxophone, and clarinet, but the concepts can be easily translated to any instrument. The basic premise is quite simple. Instead of practicing different exercises on each instrument, we will play the same phrase on all instruments, working in all keys, through the entire range of each instrument. This way of practicing makes proficiency on all instruments more accessible and less stressful. It is an efficient and organized method, which saves time and provides tangible progress.

By performing well on several instruments, doublers become more complete musicians, regardless of the instrument being played at any given moment. Taking up a secondary instrument will introduce you to new composers, repertoire, and ideas that will enhance your musicianship. Doubling necessitates more thoughtful playing and leads to more thoughtful teaching; your resulting instruction becomes more effective on every instrument you teach. Playing more instruments will also increase your earning potential! The Low Brass Player's Guide to Doubling includes chapters devoted to: tenor trombonists doubling on bass trombone; bass trombonists doubling on tenor trombone; trombonists doubling on euphonium; trombonists doubling on tuba; tuba players doubling on euphonium; euphonium and tuba players doubling on trombone; alto trombone; contrabass trombone; bass trumpet; and cimbasso. Also included are fingering charts, overtone series charts and targeted fundamentals for each instrument. The targeted fundamentals are designed to help players learn the new instrument efficiently by extracting fundamental skills unique to the new instrument.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Woodwinds: Perform, Understand, Teach provides comprehensive coverage about the woodwind family of musical instruments for prospective instrumental music teachers. What sets this book apart is its focus on how to teach the instruments. Preparing students in the how of teaching is the ultimate goal of the woodwind class and the ultimate goal of this book, which organizes information by its use in teaching beginning instrumentalists. In developing performance and understanding, pre-service teachers are positioned to learn to teach through performance—contrasted with an "old-school" belief that one must first spend much time tediously trying to understand how things work before playing the instruments. The book is organized in three parts: Preliminaries, Teaching the Instruments, and Foundations. Chapters in Teaching the Instruments are organized by instrument (flute, clarinet, saxophone, oboe, bassoon) and, within each instrument, according to how an effective teacher might organize experiences for novice learners. Basic embouchure and air stream are covered first, followed by instrument assembly, then hands and holding. Embouchure coverage returns in greater depth, then articulation, and finally "the mechanism," which includes sections on the instruments of the family, transposition, range, special fingerings, tuning and intonation, and reeds. In Foundations, topics are situated in big picture contexts, calling attention to the broad applicability of information across instruments.

This book is a thesaurus of orchestral combinations, a lexicon of the science and art of fusing timbre and sonority in symphonic scoring. Few standard manuals devote such attention to this fascinating subject as it directly relates to the imaginative deployment of orchestral instruments."--Résumé de l'éditeur.
