Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the center of this intricate fable that sizzles with sex and Brown’s signature blend of fact and fi ction, are men and women who dare to examine the deepest chambers of the heart and psyche. There is strong-willed, 29-year-old Soneyah; the feisty Sylvia; Shevaughn, whose love and devotion to her husband did not spare her 10-year marriage from the pain of infi delity; Asia, a 24-year old single mother of two and Rosemary, whose adolescence marred by sexual abuse makes it almost impossible for her trust men. These women are uniquely different but they are bound to one another by their negative experiences with men and their determination to give their male counterparts a taste of their own medicine. On another layer of the story are four men, Rayman, Luke, Knuckles and Hives, who will not let anything get in the way of their faithlessness and womanizing- even their own partners. The end of their odyssey of discovery will reveal to each character unexpected destinies and a stunning truth about themselves and those they love. Witty, sharp and thoroughly engaging, Double Standards is a searing story of life peopled by broken yet real souls on the road to discovering redemption and what it truly means to love.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, we have seen massive fines and penalties dished out to almost every major bank in the world for breaking the law. Yet these banks are considered ‘too big to indict’ in today’s world, due to the threat of destabilizing the financial system... Double Standards travels 25 years back to explore the story of a bank, with roots in the Middle East, that rose to prominence and became the fastest-growing bank in the world. It was called the Bank of Credit & Commerce International, known as BCCI, and became the 4th largest bank in the world by 1991. It became the bridge between the Third World and the West and at its height was bailing out governments in developing countries, like the IMF or World Bank. It was also a favourite port of call for some more notorious clientele, like the CIA, who used the bank to facilitate its covert operations overseas. The Bank of England and US authorities shut the BCCI down amidst allegations of fraud in July 1991, making over 14,000 employees redundant and leaving over 1 million customers out of pocket. Double Standards revisits the actions taken by the Bank of England and the regulatory authorities with regards to BCCI and carries out an academic analysis to compare its treatment with the major banking scandals following the global financial meltdown in 2008. The malpractice that BCCI was accused of was on par with a parking violation compared to the actions of the bigger banks of today, yet the fines and penalties to these banks are not as severe as the punishment meted out to BCCI. Why was the bank shut and, more importantly, who benefitted from its closure? This informative analysis of BCCI’s rise and fall will appeal to those with an interest in finance and banking law.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book finds that Al-Jazeera’s coverage of Bahrain and Syria has conformed with Qatar’s foreign policy, throughout the last decade (2011-2021). Al-Jazeera Arabic adopted Qatar’s “double standards” policy in both countries in the beginning of the Arab Spring, framing Bahrain’s protests as a “sectarian movement,” while depicting the Syrian armed conflict as a legitimate “revolution” (2011-2013). The book observes that when ties between Qatar and Bahrain worsened during the 2017 Gulf crisis, Al-Jazeera Arabic has shifted its coverage from being “pro-Bahraini regime” to “pro-protesters,” focusing on violations and giving voice to activists (2014-2021). The book concludes that the lack of “Peace Journalism” framing in Al-Jazeera’s coverage of Bahrain’s uprising and Syria’s chemical weapons attacks has represented “claims” as “facts,” and justified military action against Syria. It also reveals distinctive differences between Al-Jazeera Arabic and English, with the former lacking “objective reporting standards,” and using more sectarian language than the latter.

Book excerpt: Double Standards in Isaiah examines from a reader-orientated perspective the ethical teaching of the largest and most important of the prophetic books, and addresses the most crucial ethical issue in biblical studies: how can Yahweh justly demand such high standards of conduct for his people when he fails to live by them himself? The author considers the role of this dilemma throughout Isaiah, concluding that the 'double standards' in operation are, for Isaiah, the inevitable by-product of the prophet's vision of Yahweh's exalted status and moral superiority. This provocative book offers a unique and creative approach to the difficulty of representing the character and conduct of God, and will be essential reading for students of Isaiah and anyone with an interest in the many ethical problems of the Hebrew Bible.

This book was released on 2009-07-31 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Double standards are nothing new. Women deal with them every day. Take the common truism that women who sleep around are sluts while men are studs. Why is it that men grow distinguished and sexily gray as they age while women just get saggy and haggard? Have you ever wondered how a young woman is supposed to both virginal and provocatively enticing at the same time? Isn't it unfair that working moms are labeled "bad" for focusing on their careers while we shake our heads in disbelief when we hear about the occasional stay-at-home dad? In 50 Double Standards Every Woman Should Know, Jessica Valenti, author of Full Frontal Feminism, calls out the double standards that affect every woman. Whether Jessica is pointing out the wage earning discrepancies between men and women or revealing all of the places that women still aren't equal to their male counterparts-be it in the workplace, courtroom, bedroom, or home-she maintains her signature wittily sarcastic tone. With sass, humor, and in-your-face facts, this book informs and equips women with the tools they need to combat sexist comments, topple ridiculous stereotypes (girls aren't good at math?), and end the promotion of lame double standards.

Book excerpt: Reason and Ethics defends the theoretical claim that all values are subjective and the practical claim that human affairs can be conducted fruitfully in full awareness of this. Joel Marks goes beyond his previous work defending moral skepticism to question the existence of all objective values. This leads him to suggest a novel answer to the Companions in Guilt argument that the denial of morality would mean relinquishing rationality as well. Marks disarms the argument by conceding the irreality of both morality and logic, but is still able to rescue rationality while dispensing with morality on pragmatic grounds. He then offers a positive account of how life may be lived productively without recourse to attributions and assertions of right and wrong, good and bad, and even truth and falsity. Written in an accessible and engaging style, Reason and Ethics will be of interest to scholars and students working in metaethics as well as to the generally intellectually curious.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fundamental to understanding human sexual expression is reliable and valid measurement and assessment. Many instruments have been developed to measure a myriad of sexuality-related states, traits, behaviors, and outcomes. Few are easily accessible and the information is limited concerning appropriate use and psychometric properties. In Handbook of Sexuality-Related Measures, more than 200 instruments are reproduced, accompanied by the necessary information for their use in research, as well as educational and clinical settings. Measures relating to more than 50 topics are included. Examples are abortion, aging, arousal, general and specific attitudes and behavior, contraception, dysfunctions, education, experience, gender identity, homosexuality, ideology, jealousy, knowledge, masturbation, orgasm, rape, and sexually transmitted diseases. Each chapter describes the development and appropriate use of each instrument, giving information on timing, scoring, and interpretation. Reliability and validity data are, summarized and completely referenced. Nearly all articles include the entire instrument; others provide illustrative content from the instrument and give all necessary information to obtain the instrument.

Book excerpt: Learn to identify—and combat—Systemic Shame, the feeling of self-hatred and disempowerment that comes from living in a society that blames individuals for systemic problems, with this invaluable resource from the social psychologist and author of Unmasking Autism. “Stop doomscrolling and read this book. You’ll feel better, I promise.”—Celeste Headlee, journalist and bestselling author Systemic Shame is the socially engineered self-loathing that says we are solely to blame for our circumstances. It tells us that poverty is remedied by hard-working people pulling themselves up by their bootstraps, that marginalized people are personally responsible for solving the problem of their own oppression, and that massive global crises like climate change can be solved with individual action. Feeling overwhelmed? That’s your problem, too. The more we try and ultimately fail to live up to impossible societal standards of moral goodness, the more shame we feel—and the more we retreat into isolation and despair. Social psychologist Dr. Devon Price knows firsthand the destructive effects of Systemic Shame; he experienced shame and self-hatred as he grappled with his transgender identity, feeling as if his suffering was caused by his own actions rather than systems like cissexism. And it doesn’t just end with internal feelings of anguish. It causes us to judge other people the same way we fear being judged, which blocks us from seeking out the acceptance and support we need and discourages us from trying to improve our communities and our relationships. In Unlearning Shame, Dr. Price explores how we can deal with those hard emotions more effectively, tackling the societal shame we’ve absorbed and directed at ourselves. He introduces the antidote to Systemic Shame: expansive recognition, an awareness of one’s position in the larger social world and the knowledge that our battles are only won when they are shared. He provides a suite of exercises and resources designed to combat Systemic Shame on a personal, interpersonal, and global level through rebuilding trust in yourself, in others, and in our shared future. By offering a roadmap to healing and a toolkit of actionable items, Unlearning Shame helps us reject hopelessness and achieve sustainable change and personal growth.
