But Rose, although favourite with all the guests and loved by her parents, feels very ordinary: she is clumsy and no matter how hard she tries, she can never improve her horse-riding skills, despite her great love for horses. And she always fails to impress Ben, a fifteen year old prodigy athlete, who comes every year with his family for summer holidays. But strange things begin to happen on the day Rose turns thirteen. Her birthday party is disturbed by the arrival of the mysterious Mr Vingo, a pianist and composer whose unusual music causes Rose to travel in time where she is summoned as the emissary for the magical Great Gray Horse, whose mission is to protect innocent people from evil. But the messenger's mission is full of challenges and dangers; will Rose be brave enough to carry it out? The Messenger is the first book in the four-part fantasy adventure series about Rose and the magical Great Grey Horse. This charming and entertaining series is written with Monica Dickens' typical sensitivity and insight into the hearts of young readers.
Book Synopsis Butterfly in the Well by : Robert Ewing
Download or read book Butterfly in the Well written by Robert Ewing and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2019-05-01 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Churchill had one ear for history and the other for politics, and certainly listened to Chamberlain, who said long before he said it: “we will never surrender” (March 1939). “Long before Munich he [Chamberlain] had shocked substantial sections of opinion by his frank and completely realist assessment of the strength and weakness of the League of Nations. When it was clear that members of the League, for good reasons or bad, were not prepared to involve themselves in war over questions in which they themselves had no direct interest, it was obviously idle to pretend that there was any such thing as ‘collective security’ on which nations could confidently rely for their own protection.” “There was at this date no ‘League of Nations’, ...and if ever there was a phrase without meaning it was ‘collective security’ as opposed to national security under the conditions of the later thirties.” With numerous historical facts and insights in current affairs, Irish author, artist, and historian, Robert Ewing explores Anglo-Irish affairs and Irish life, and thereby challenges a number of international myths and State cultures as involving media posture between State and People control of one another. He particularly focuses on the actions of Neville Chamberlain, Winston Churchill, and others leading up to and during World War II, identifying the generally somewhat confused repercussions of their fame. Weaving in autobiography, quotation and even poetry, this historical and political reality-check was written to be read several times and, like art, to generally inspire objective and intelligent thought and awareness. Life is a passing entity for each of us, and inspiration is our means to understand it. Colour edition
Book Synopsis The Fox-Hunting Controversy, 1781–2004 by : Allyson N. May
Download or read book The Fox-Hunting Controversy, 1781–2004 written by Allyson N. May and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-16 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: August 1781 saw the publication of a manual on fox hunting that would become a classic of its genre. Hugely popular in its own day, Peter Beckford's Thoughts on Hunting is often cited as marking the birth of modern hunting and continues to be quoted from affectionately today by the hunting fraternity. Less stressed is the fact that its subject was immediately controversial, and that a hostile review which appeared on the heels of the manual's publication raised two criticisms of fox hunting that would be repeated over the next two centuries: fox hunting was a cruel sport and a feudal, anachronistic one at that. This study explores the attacks made on fox hunting from 1781 to the legal ban achieved in 2004, as well as assessing the reasons for its continued appeal and post-ban survival. Chapters cover debates in the areas of: class and hunting; concerns over cruelty and animal welfare; party politics; the hunt in literature; and nostalgia. By adopting a thematic approach, the author is able to draw out the wider social and cultural implications of the debates, and to explore what they tell us about national identity, social mores and social relations in modern Britain.
