Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nikolaus Dumba, was a most inspired and enthusiastic Viennese who became Maecenas of the Arts and national benefactor for Austria and Greece. He was most prominent in Vienna’s cultural life in the 2nd half of the 19th century and was acclaimed as a ‘genius of the Muses’, although he also distinguished himself in other fields, such as those of politics and finance. He had a leading role in the shaping of New Vienna. «...without Dumba many of the Vienna monuments would have never been created, neither of Schubert, Schiller, Beethoven or Grillparzer, nor that of Motzart and Makart»(Neue Freie Presse 25.03.1900). His personal friends Johannes Brahms and Johann Strauss extolled the legendary role he played in music and the arts and in the ‘expansion and embellishment’ of the city of Vienna by dedicating the choral waltz Neu Wien (New Vienna) to him. The ‘immortal’ Donauwalzer (Blue Danube Waltz), may have not existed without his personal intervention as President then of the ‘Vienna Men’s Choral Society’. He is best known as «founder of the Musikverein in its present form...» in the Dumba Strasse. He donated the ‘Dumba-Schubert collection’, the largest in the world, to the Vienna Library. Nikolaus Dumba made a distinct political career as Member of the Austrian Parliament for 30 years (1870-1900) and served as personal adviser to the emperor Franz Josef. His name was registered in the Golden Book of Vienna’s Honorary Citizens and his tomb is included among those of the great composers in the Vienna’s Central Cemetery.

Book excerpt: Whether the canvases of Gustav Klimt (1862 – 1918) celebrated the exquisite landscapes of Austria’s Attersee region or caressed the cheek of a lovely young laundress, his appreciation of his subjects was sensitive, sensual and strong. No other painter in Vienna at the close of the 19th century was as revered—and often reviled—as this outrageous artist wearing only a knowing expression and a long blue smock. One of the women who found her way onto his canvas and into his bed was Mizzi Zimmermann (the subject of this book, Dirty Linen), whom he would cherish, in his way, until his death. Mizzi, and the subjects of Book One—Vienna Patterns (Emilie Flöge) and Book Two—Diamonds and Sand (Adele Bloch-Bauer) enjoy everlasting admiration, thanks to Klimt’s brush—A Brush with Passion.

Book Synopsis African Immigrants in South Africa by : Godfrey Mwakikagile
Download or read book African Immigrants in South Africa written by Godfrey Mwakikagile and published by New Africa Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work looks at the fate of black African immigrants in South Africa and the xenophobic attacks against them which have taken place in many parts of the country through the years since the end of apartheid. The xenophobic violence has been perpetrated by black South Africans, prompting some people to describe this phenomenon as the new apartheid - by blacks against other blacks - after the end of white minority rule. Besides the violence directed against them, black African immigrants also face hostility in general from a significant number of South Africans including educated ones and members of the middle class as well as some leaders who "encourage" them to "go home." In 2008, black African immigrants were attacked in different parts of the country in the worst form of violence since the end of apartheid. Tens of thousands were left homeless and just as many were forced to flee South Africa and return to their home countries. The author looks at the factors behind the violence and why many Africans are forced to flee their home countries in search of greener pastures elsewhere. Bad African leadership is one of the main factors. He also argues that South Africa can not solve the problems of other African countries, including unemployment, and should not be expected to. The attacks against the immigrants have resulted in many deaths and destruction of property through the years. And their plight is inextricably linked with the transformation the country has been undergoing since the end of apartheid, the author contends. This work also looks at prospects for transformation and the challenges South Africa faces in its quest for social justice across the spectrum in a society still dominated by whites in terms of economic power. Millions of blacks are still trapped in poverty with no relief in sight, a factor which explains some of the violence that has been directed against foreigners, mostly black African immigrants who are accused of taking jobs away from black South Africans, especially those living in poverty in the townships which were also the scene of the worst form of violence perpetrated against the immigrants since the end of white minority rule.

Book Synopsis Economic and Political Reform in Africa by : Peter D. Little
Download or read book Economic and Political Reform in Africa written by Peter D. Little and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2013-11-20 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are the local effects of major economic and political reforms in Africa? How have globalized pro-market and pro-democracy reforms impacted local economics and communities? Examining case studies from The Gambia, Ghana, Mozambique, Kenya, Ethiopia, and Somalia, Peter D. Little shows how rural farmers and others respond to complex agendas of governments, development agencies, and non-governmental organizations. The book explores the contradictions between what policy reforms were supposed to do and what actually happened in local communities. Little's bold vision of development challenges common narratives of African poverty, dependency, and environmental degradation and suggests that sustainable development in Africa can best be achieved by strengthening local livelihoods, markets, and institutions.
