Book Synopsis Representations of Islam in United States Comics, 1880-1922 by : Maryanne A. Rhett
Download or read book Representations of Islam in United States Comics, 1880-1922 written by Maryanne A. Rhett and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-09-19 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Representations of Islam in United States Comics, 1880-1922 examines the depiction of Islam, Muslims, and the Islamic world in U.S. popular culture, particularly comics and related artifacts, between 1880 and 1922. Through cartoons, comics, editorial cartoons, serialized advertisements and other materials the book unfolds a narrative about how the Islamic world and its people were understood by the American government and its people. This “knowledge,” garnered from popular culture of the day, produced a lens through which domestic and international relationships were created and maintained. Representing a wide swath of U.S. popular culture and discourse, the reflections these artifacts offer are united in their depiction of the “Oriental” in an era that is largely assumed to have been marked by American un-interest in the region, peoples and religion. An exciting contribution to a growing field, this book resituates the U.S. within the Islamic world, using the everyday medium of comics to provide a fresh perspective on the subject.

Book Synopsis The Charlie Hebdo Affair and Comparative Journalistic Cultures by : Lyombe Eko
Download or read book The Charlie Hebdo Affair and Comparative Journalistic Cultures written by Lyombe Eko and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-14 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Charlie Hebdo terrorist attack of January 7, 2015 shook French journalism to the core and reverberated around the world, triggering a cascade of responses from journalists, media outlets, cartoonists and caricaturists from diverse geographies of freedom of expression and journalistic cultures. This book is a multifaceted case study that describes and explains sameness and difference in diverse journalistic conceptualizations of the Charlie Hebdo affair from a comparative, international perspective. It explores how different journalistic traditions, cultures, worldviews and styles conceptualized and reacted to the clash between freedom of expression and respect for religious sentiments in the context of terrorism, where those sentiments are imposed on the media and secular societies through intimidation, coercion and violence. The book analyzes the political and cultural clashes between the core human right of freedom of expression, and rite of respect for religious sentiments, which is situated on the outer periphery of the human right of freedom of religion. It also examines how media outlets, editors, and cartoonists from different politico-cultural contexts and journalistic cultures in Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and North and South America, addressed the delicate issue of Mohammed cartoons in general, and the problem of (re)publication of the controversial Charlie Hebdo Je Suis Charlie Mohammed cartoon, in particular.
Book Synopsis CARTOON CONTROVERSY AND RIGHT TO FREEDOM OF SPEECH AND EXPRESSION by : Dr. Prashant Kumar Srivastava
Download or read book CARTOON CONTROVERSY AND RIGHT TO FREEDOM OF SPEECH AND EXPRESSION written by Dr. Prashant Kumar Srivastava and published by KVR Book Central. This book was released on with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Purpose of the study becomes relevant and assumes importance by fact that freedom of expression is most important human rights of the democracy, besides which the society will be monochromatic, but this freedom can’t be unrestricted. One can enjoy/ entertain its freedom up to that extent only until it doesn’t violate others freedom. A cartoonist expresses his attitude towards the various figures, characters and situations depicted in his figures, and thus represent the interests of a society, which are not always in harmony in the government. A cartoonist not only has to be creative, but he also has to attempt to be educational. For the latter purpose the cartoonist should conform to moral norms, which might potentially be in contradiction with his style of expression. The authority struggles differently with cartoonists. In some countries cartoonists are beaten, thrown in prison and even killed. In countries where authorities are unable to discreetly dispose of resenting cartoonists in such ways, other subtly coercive methods are applied.

Gaines, Paul Gravett, Diana Green, Karen Green, Doug Harvey, Charles Hatfield, M. Thomas Inge, Leslie Jones, Jonah Kinigstein, Denis Kitchen, John A. Lent, Dwayne McDuffie, Andrei Molotiu, Alvaro de Moya, Kim A. Munson, Cullen Murphy, Gary Panter, Trina Robbins, Rob Salkowitz, Antoine Sausverd, Art Spiegelman, Scott Timberg, Carol Tyler, Brian Walker, Alexi Worth, Joe Wos, and Craig Yoe Through essays and interviews, Kim A. Munson’s anthology tells the story of the over-thirty-year history of the artists, art critics, collectors, curators, journalists, and academics who championed the serious study of comics, the trends and controversies that produced institutional interest in comics, and the wax and wane and then return of comic art in museums. Audiences have enjoyed displays of comic art in museums as early as 1930. In the mid-1960s, after a period when most representational and commercial art was shunned, comic art began a gradual return to art museums as curators responded to the appropriation of comics characters and iconography by such famous pop artists as Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. From the first-known exhibit to show comics in art historical context in 1942 to the evolution of manga exhibitions in Japan, this volume regards exhibitions both in the United States and internationally. With over eighty images and thoughtful essays by Denis Kitchen, Brian Walker, Andrei Molotiu, Paul Gravett, Art Spiegelman, Trina Robbins, and Charles Hatfield, among others, this anthology shows how exhibitions expanded the public dialogue about comic art and our expectation of “good art”—displaying how dedicated artists, collectors, fans, and curators advanced comics from a frequently censored low-art medium to a respected art form celebrated worldwide.
