Book excerpt: The main purpose of this paper is to investigate the impact of foreign direct investment (FDI) on economic growth in Vietnam over the five-year post-crisis period of 2010-2014. In addition, it also provides a comparative analysis with the pre-crisis period to yield greater insight into how the FDI-growth nexus evolved over time and under different economic conditions. Our empirical work is based on a panel data set containing 63 provinces in Vietnam. We start our analytical section by examining the FDI-growth relationship using two simple ordinary-least-square (OLS) models, where FDI and economic growth are the dependent variables and are regressed on a number of other factors that seemingly influence FDI and growth. With an awareness of the possible endogeneity bias, we re-estimate our model using the simultaneous equation approach, employing the two-step system generalized method of moment (GMM) estimator. We complement our study by re-estimating the model on the pre-crisis sample during the period 1999-2006. Then, we re-run our regressions on the full-sample setting and take into account the possible effect of the 2007/2008 crisis by incorporating the crisis dummy variables (D2007 and D2008) to shed more light on the impact of the crisis on FDI and economic growth. Overall, we find some evidence of the simultaneous relationship: increased inward FDI promotes economic growth, while at the same time, greater growth could help the country to attract additional FDI capital. However, this bi-directional relationship only existed in the post-crisis period, and not in the pre-crisis time. During the pre-crisis period, growth does not exhibit a significant impact on FDI, while FDI is found to be an important driver of growth. In our full-sample setting, we find a robust positive significant influence of FDI on economic growth. However, economic growth, again, does not exhibit a significant positive impact on FDI. Some other factors, including domestic investment, market size, exports, level of trade openness and infrastructure development, either promote economic growth or inward investment. We also find some evidence suggesting that Vietnam should invest more in human capital to obtain a sufficient absorptive capability in order to benefit from advanced technologies and knowledge transfers that accompany inward FDI. In the end, our empirical findings suggest that the country should implement a more 'open door' policy to exploit further benefits from additional FDI inflows.

Book excerpt: By employing the difference Generalized Moment of Method (GMM) and the Pooled Mean Group (PMG) methods, the paper analyzes the role of foreign direct investment (FDI) and other factors in economic growth in Vietnam in the period 2000-2015. Besides, the paper clarifies the spillover effects of FDI to other variables in the model through Granger causality test. The research collects the most balance updated data from 43 provinces or cities to run regressions. For the first time, the recurrent expenditure variable is put into the model. The fact of encoding geography control variable instead of dummy one as previous studies is another novelty of the paper. The results indicate that FDI has a positive and significant impact on Vietnamese economic growth in the long-term. Moreover, it also affirms the two-way causal relationship between FDI and other independent variables as private investment, labor force, tax revenues, infrastructure, trade openness and technology gap. This will serve as a basis for mapping out policies over FDI to boost economic growth in the coming time.

Book excerpt: As Vietnam's economy moves further along the path of development, this book presents urgent lessons for policymakers from the country's first decade of experience of FDI. A mere decade after the start of its reforms towards a market-oriented economy, a World Bank report named Vietnam the second largest recipient of foreign direct investment (FDI). Drawing on a wealth of hitherto unpublished data and qualitative analysis, this work critically examines the overall impact of FDI on Vietnams economy, as well as the performance of individual projects. A major finding is that government policy and intervention have been important in channelling foreign investment flows towards national and regional development goals. This book is also a significant addition to the debates on FDI-induced effects such as technology transfer and employment creation in developing countries. It will be of great interest to all those researching or involved in policymaking in transitional economies in particular.

Book excerpt: During the 1990s, Vietnam experienced high economic growth, significant reduction in poverty and remarkable inflows of foreign direct investment. The book aims at examining impacts of foreign direct investment on economic growth and poverty reduction in Vietnam during 1986-2001 analytically and empirically. The triangulation methodology is used. Conclusions are that foreign direct investment contributed significantly to Vietnam's growth and this worked mainly through capital accumulation and intra-industry spillover. Economic growth in turn reduced poverty. Direct impact of foreign direct investment on poverty was insignificant at the national level but significant in three localities where most foreign investors located. Foreign direct investment thus helped reduce poverty in Vietnam.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis analyses the determinants of Foreign Direct Investment in Vietnam from 1988-2009. It examines the nature, motivation and impact of FDI upon the Vietnam economy and its contribution to the subsequent leap forward in economic growth. The focus is on developing Dunning's eclectic theory through case study analysis of Honda-Vietnam Motorbike Company and ANZ-Vietnam Bank. The prominent theories on FDI generally used in the thesis focus on Vernon's Product Life Cycle (PLC) model, the Market Imperfection Theory (MIT), the Transaction Cost (TC) or internalisation approach and Dunning's Eclectic Theory. Dunning is the clearest methodology for understanding the Vietnamese case as its method is to take account of a countries particular FDI characteristics and their impact on economic growth. The addition of an emphasis on the impact of culture upon the development of FDI in Vietnam provides this thesis with evidence of its originality and legitimacy to the claim of filling a gap in the literature on FDI in developing countries and the advancement of economic theory. The main focus in the case studies is demonstrating how foreign invested enterprises altered production, management, service and marketing processes to adapt their traditional, organisational and locational advantages to suit the local environment, and give them both foreign and domestic comparative advantages, ensuring the maximum possible capital return on their investments.

Book excerpt: The impact of foreign investment (FDI)on economic growth has been a controversial topic of debate among economic researchers. FDI is expected to bring many benefit to recipient countries, however there are also many potential disadvantages from a development point of view (Thirlwall, 2011). This paper will estimate the empirical impact of FDI on GDP growth of Vietnam during the period 1990-2013 and compare the impact between two divided periods: post and after the WTO accession of Vietnam in 2007. Firstly, the result shows that for the whole period, FDI has statistically and economically contribute to the growth of GDP in Vietnam. Secondly, the estimated result provides an evidence that FDI might have crowding out effect on domestic investment. Finally, it is shown that before joining the WTO, domestic source of investment has larger impact than FDI on GDP growth. But after the WTO accession there is weak statistical evidence to support the expectation that the impact of FDI on Vietnam's economic GDP growth has increased.

Book excerpt: The thesis starts with an in-depth review of economic growth and foreign direct investment theories. These theories are used to critically evaluate policies that are used Vietnamese government to attract FDI in different regions of Vietnam. This discussion paves the way for the development of methodology and empirical work presented in the thesis. The thesis utilises panel data on 61 provinces of Vietnam. Panel data analysis allows one to take into account the impact of unobservable factors and hence yield more reliable results. The thesis mainly utilises the Generalised Method of Moments (GMM) estimation technique. This technique is considered to be most appropriate because it avoids the potential endogeneity and related complications.

The country has invested heavily in education, health, and development infrastructure across the country. Progress in recent decades has been strong and Vietnam has attracted significant relocation and outsourcing of production from OECD countries. In recent years much of the withdrawn foreign direct investment from China is channeled to Vietnam. The state’s development policy has created optimal conditions for further expansion of production, supply chain, education and finances. Investment in education, health, infrastructure, administration, and regulations is facilitating investment inflows, technology transfer and spillover to the growing national companies. The educated young population and disciplined labor force have provided a strong basis for the growth in the economy. The high level of productivity, improved quality of products, low and competitive cost of production, and more than 100 million people provide a strong base for a continued economic growth. This edited volume is written by the professional, young, educated, and active entrepreneurial generation with good insights into the features of the economy and its development potential. They provide an up-to-date view and empirical research-based picture of the recent trends in Vietnam's economic development. Book excerpt: The United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were set with a target date of 2030, and they represent our collective endeavors for a more sustainable future. However, seven years since their introduction, international business scholars have yet to fully comprehend their potential to lead these goals. This critical gap raises a pressing question: why has the academic community not fully harnessed its power to advance the SDGs? Amid an abundance of scholarly publications on ethics and responsible governance, corporate social responsibility (CSR), sustainable development, and environmental concerns, the spotlight has dimmed on the pivotal role that international business can play in this transformative agenda. Smart Strategies and Societal Solutions for Sustainable International Business solves this issue with chapters developed specifically for academic scholars. This book serves as a comprehensive guide to unleash the untapped potential of international business in promoting the SDGs. Covering a wide range of disciplines, from information sciences to sociology and environmental studies, it equips scholars with the knowledge and tools they need to push sustainable international business to the forefront of the global agenda. With a meticulous exploration of crucial topics such as corporate governance, digital transformation, environmental sustainability, social responsibility, and more, this book offers a blueprint for academic scholars to spearhead the charge toward a more sustainable and equitable world.
