Book excerpt: Adi Shankara's works deal with logically establishing the doctrine of Advaita Vedanta as he saw it in the Upanishads. He formulates the doctrine of Advaita Vedanta by validating his arguments on the basis of quotations from the Vedas and other Hindu scriptures. He gives a high priority to swanubhava ("personal experience") of the student. His works are largely polemical in nature. He directs his polemics mostly against the Sankhya, Buddha, Jaina, Vaisheshika and other non-vedantic Hindu philosophies. Traditionally, his works are classified under Bhasya ("commentary"), Prakarana grantha ("philosophical treatise") and Stotra ("devotional hymn"). The commentaries serve to provide a consistent interpretation of the scriptural texts from the perspective of Advaita Vedanta. The philosophical treatises provide various methodologies to the student to understand the doctrine. The devotional hymns are rich in poetry and piety, serving to highlight the relationship between the devotee and the deity. Adi Shankara wrote Bhashyas on the ten major Upanishads, the Brahma Sutras and the Bhagavad Gita. In his works, he quotes from Shveshvatara, Kaushitakai, Mahanarayana and Jabala Upanishads, among others. Bhashyas on Kaushitaki, Nrisimhatapani and Shveshvatara Upanishads are extant but the authenticity is doubtful.[53] Adi Shankara's is the earliest extant commentary on the Brahma Sutras. However, he mentions older commentaries like those of Dravida, Bhartrprapancha and others.

Book excerpt: ""To the sacred literature of the Brahmans, in the strict sense of the term, i.e. to the Veda, there belongs a certain number of complementary works without whose assistance the student is, according to Hindu notions, unable to do more than commit the sacred texts to memory. In the first place all Vedic texts must, in order to be understood, be read together with running commentaries such as Sâyana's commentaries on the Samhitâs and Brâhmanas, and the Bhâshyas ascribed to Sankara on the chief Upanishads. But these commentaries do not by themselves conduce to a full comprehension of the contents of the sacred texts, since they confine themselves to explaining the meaning of each detached passage without investigating its relation to other passages, and the whole of which they form part; considerations of the latter kind are at any rate introduced occasionally only. The task of taking a comprehensive view of the contents of the Vedic writings as a whole, of systematising what they present in an unsystematical form, of showing the mutual co-ordination or subordination of single passages and sections, and of reconciling contradictions-which, according to the view of the orthodox commentators, can be apparent only-is allotted to a separate sâstra or body of doctrine which is termed Mîmâmsâ, i.e. the investigation or enquiry, viz. the enquiry into the connected meaning of the sacred texts. Of this Mîmâmsâ two branches have to be distinguished, the so-called earlier (pûrva) Mîmâmsâ, and the later (uttara) Mîmâmsâ. The former undertakes to systematise the karmakânda, i.e. that entire portion of the Veda which is concerned with action, pre-eminently sacrificial action, and which comprises the Samhitâs and the Brâhmanas exclusive of the Âranyaka portions; the latter performs the same service with regard to the so-called jñânakanda, i.e. that part of the Vedic writings which includes the Âranyaka portions of the Brâhmanas, and a number of detached treatises called Upanishads. Its subject is not action but knowledge, viz. the knowledge of Brahman."" Vedanta Sutras offers this knowledge to its readers. First, the Upanishads, and especially the ten greater and older Upanishads, which go back far into India's past, and which have come down to us associated with the four collections of Vedic hymns. ... The second element of the Vedanta store is the Bhagavad Gita, to which, perhaps, certain other texts in the Mahabharata may be added, such as the Anugita. The Bhagavad Gita gives a warm, personal coloring to the older wisdom, by putting it into the form of a dialogue between the divine teacher, Krishna, and his pupil, Arjuna. ... The third element of the Vedanta is the book of almost cryptic sentences known as the Vedanta Sutras, and attributed by tradition to the sage Badarayana. He did not merely view him as a religious reformer, but as a high philosopher, as one who studied and revealed the science of Mind, to a degree, perhaps, as no other has done before or after. For Johnston, Sankara represents the mind and soul of Vedanta-the culmination of a work of centuries, through the efforts of countless sages. In his own words: "By the Vedanta, we mean, I think, the sum of the rivers of wisdom which rise in the Upanishads, and flow through books like the Bhagavad Gita into the reservoir of the Brahma Sutras, made level and water-tight by the Commentary of Sankaracharya." Of the value and importance of Sankara's works, Johnston has much to say throughout his commentaries and in the articles included in this volume. To him, the texts translated here teach "quite plainly and lucidly, the first steps on the path of wisdom." They offer us not only a high intellectual understanding of the Vedanta philosophy, but a high moral foundation as well. The works translated and commented upon in this volume are drawn from several sources, and passed through more than one rendition each. Johnston first began his translation of these works in 1894 on behalf of the Oriental Department of the Theosophical Society. Therein he completed a translation of the Atma Bodha, Tattva Bodha, Vakya Sudha, Siddhanta-Tattva-Vindu and the famous Crest-Jewel of Wisdom (Vivekachudamani). These translations were later compiled and published by the same society as The Crest-Jewel of Wisdom and other Writings of Sankaracharya (Theosophical University Press, First Edition, 1946). These, however, are not the same translations that appear in the present volume. Several years after his work for the Oriental Department, Johnston revisited his translations of each of these works, with the exception of the Siddhanta-Tattva-Vindu, revising and refining his terminology, greatly enhancing his clarity and, in our opinion, improving upon the poetry of each translation. These later translations appeared in a small periodical magazine call the Theosophical Quarterly, between the years 1913 and 1925. It is these, with their accompanying commentaries, that appear in this volume. Several articles are also included in the work, both to introduce and to supplement the translations. These are are drawn from several sources, and provide many details of Johnston's approach to Vedanta not covered in his commentaries. A second appendix provides a translation of the Atmanatma-Viveka by the theosophist Mohini Chatterji, along with an article by the same author. Johnston's Vedanta is, we feel, a faithful representation of Sankara's thought and intent, translated not only from one language to another, but from one culture to another. He makes Sankara's works accessible to the western mind, giving us a foothold into the nature of eastern wisdom in a way few others have done.
