Book Synopsis Love on the Racks by : Michelle Nolan
Download or read book Love on the Racks written by Michelle Nolan and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-03-21 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the better part of three decades romance comics were an American institution. Nearly 6000 titles were published between 1947 and 1977, and for a time one in five comics sold in the U.S. was a romance comic. This first full-length study examines the several types of romance comics, their creators and publishing history. The author explores significant periods in the development of the genre, including the origins of Archie Comics and other teen publications, the romance comic "boom and bust" of the 1950s, and their sudden disappearance when fantasy and superhero comics began to dominate in the late 1970s.
Book Synopsis Unsung Hollywood Musicals of the Golden Era by : Edwin M. Bradley
Download or read book Unsung Hollywood Musicals of the Golden Era written by Edwin M. Bradley and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2016-02-29 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most memorable Hollywood musicals of 1930s showcased the talents of stars like Fred Astaire, Jeanette MacDonald, Bing Crosby and Alice Faye. The less memorable ones didn't. This book takes a look at the unsung songfests of the '30s--secondary or forgotten features with short-lived or unlikely stars from major studios and Poverty Row. Through analysis of films such as Lord Byron of Broadway (1930), Shoot the Works (1934), Bottoms Up (1934), Moonlight and Pretzels (1933) and The Music Goes 'Round (1936), the author profiles such performers as Dorothy Dell, Lee Dixon, Peggy Fears, Lawrence Gray, Joe Morrison and the mother-daughter team of Myrt and Marge. Behind-the-scenes figures are discussed, like the infamously profligate producer Lou Brock, whose flops Down to Their Last Yacht (1934) and Top of the Town (1937) cost him his career. Filmographies and production information are included, with background on key participants.

Book Synopsis P.G. Wodehouse and Hollywood by : Brian Taves
Download or read book P.G. Wodehouse and Hollywood written by Brian Taves and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-01-24 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beloved British humorist P.G. Wodehouse produced a wealth of literature in his lengthy career, contributing novels, short stories, plays, lyrics and essays to the canon of comic writing. His work in film and television included two stints as a screenwriter in Hollywood in the 1930s, and his stories have been the basis for more than 150 film and television productions. He also wrote 20 stories and essays about Hollywood, satirizing the city and its entertainment magnates. This book studies P.G. Wodehouse's extensive, but often overlooked relationship with Tinsel Town. The book is arranged chronologically, covering Wodehouse's Hollywood career from his early efforts in silent film, to his later contributions in television, to his work adapted posthumously for the screen. Radio is covered as well, including a discussion of his internment in occupied France and his brief appearances on German radio. Reflecting Wodehouse's international appeal, the book covers Wodehouse films and television in England, Germany, Sweden, and India. Also included are a comprehensive, detailed list of Wodehouse's stories and articles about Hollywood, and a complete filmography of motion picture and television works to which he contributed or which were based on his stories.

Book Synopsis Archie's Rivals in Teen Comics, 1940s-1970s by : Michelle Nolan
Download or read book Archie's Rivals in Teen Comics, 1940s-1970s written by Michelle Nolan and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2020-05-22 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to comprehensively examine the multitude of non-Archie teen humor comic books, including girls and boys such as Patsy Walker, Hedy Wolfe, Buzz Baxter and Wendy Parker from Marvel; Judy Foster, Buzzy, Binky and Scribbly from DC; Candy from Quality Comics; and Hap Hazard from Ace Comics. It covers, often for the first time, the history of the characters, who drew them, why (or why not) they succeeded as rivals for the Archie Series, highlights of both unusual and typical stories and much more. The author provides major plotlines and a history of the development of each series. Much has been written about the Archie characters, but until now very little has been told about most of their many comic book competitors.
Download or read book The Mary Daly Reader written by Mary Daly and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2017-01-24 with total page 477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Makes key excerpts from Daly's work accessible to readers who are seeking to access the essence of her thought in a single volume. Outrageous, humorous, inflammatory, Amazonian, intellectual, provocative, controversial, and a discoverer of Feminist word-magic, Mary Daly’s influence on Second Wave feminism was enormous. She burst through constraints to articulate new ways of being female and alive. This comprehensive reader offers a vital introduction to the core of Daly’s work and the complexities secreted away in the pages of her books. Her major theories—Bio-philia, Be-ing as Verb, and the life force within words—and major controversies—relating to race, transgender identity, and separatism—are all covered, and the editors have provided introductions to each selection for context. The text has been crafted to be accessible to a broad readership, without diluting Daly’s witty but complicated vocabulary. Begun in collaboration with Daly while she was still alive, and completed after her death in 2010, the chapters in this book will surprise even those who thought they knew her work. They contain highlights from Mary Daly’s published works over a forty-year span, including her major books Beyond God the Father, Gyn/Ecology, and Pure Lust, as well as smaller articles and excerpts, with additional contributions from Robin Morgan and Mary E. Hunt. Perfect for those seeking an introduction to this path-breaking feminist thinker, The Mary Daly Reader makes key excerpts from her work accessible to new readers as well as those already familiar with her work who are seeking to access the essence of her thought in a single volume.
Download or read book Mac written by Virginia Freytag MacGeorge and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-08-20 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To tell this story I have to start somewhere. These letters (and there are almost 300 of them) have been in three boxes, all tied together with a double wrap of cord. They have been tied up in those boxes for over fi fty years; a few of the early letters are fi fty-nine years old. One box was a four-pound, heart shaped Fanny Farmer candy box. One of the white gift shirt boxes contained a white satin night gown, a blue print rayon dress which I had made, and a small knitted, very dainty looking blue baby sweater, which I also had made. Once I tied them together I never looked at them again until now, and I really regret that I did not do it sooner. There are so many questions I would ask, but now it is too late.
