Student affairs assessment plays a significant role in shaping the overall college experience. As higher education transforms, there is an even greater demand for student affairs assessment that informs practice, illuminates equity gaps, and improves student learning. This second edition builds upon the concepts of the first edition while adding essential topics that address the changing dynamics of leading assessment in a department or division in student affairs such as how to use and select assessment technology, meaningful ways to collaborate with institutional research, as well as creating equity-centered assessment practices. By utilizing the strategies in this book, student affairs divisions can create evidence-based practices that contribute to a more inclusive and supportive campus environment, foster student engagement, and ultimately enhance the educational journey for students. This updated and revised edition has been written with new and seasoned assessment practitioners in mind. It’s an ideal resource for graduate students and other student affairs practitioners who seek to find practical information to guide their own assessment practice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The routine jobs of yesterday are being replaced by technology and/or shipped off-shore. In their place, job categories that require knowledge management, abstract reasoning, and personal services seem to be growing. The modern workplace requires workers to have broad cognitive and affective skills. Often referred to as "21st century skills," these skills include being able to solve complex problems, to think critically about tasks, to effectively communicate with people from a variety of different cultures and using a variety of different techniques, to work in collaboration with others, to adapt to rapidly changing environments and conditions for performing tasks, to effectively manage one's work, and to acquire new skills and information on one's own. The National Research Council (NRC) has convened two prior workshops on the topic of 21st century skills. The first, held in 2007, was designed to examine research on the skills required for the 21st century workplace and the extent to which they are meaningfully different from earlier eras and require corresponding changes in educational experiences. The second workshop, held in 2009, was designed to explore demand for these types of skills, consider intersections between science education reform goals and 21st century skills, examine models of high-quality science instruction that may develop the skills, and consider science teacher readiness for 21st century skills. The third workshop was intended to delve more deeply into the topic of assessment. The goal for this workshop was to capitalize on the prior efforts and explore strategies for assessing the five skills identified earlier. The Committee on the Assessment of 21st Century Skills was asked to organize a workshop that reviewed the assessments and related research for each of the five skills identified at the previous workshops, with special attention to recent developments in technology-enabled assessment of critical thinking and problem-solving skills. In designing the workshop, the committee collapsed the five skills into three broad clusters as shown below: Cognitive skills: nonroutine problem solving, critical thinking, systems thinking Interpersonal skills: complex communication, social skills, team-work, cultural sensitivity, dealing with diversity Intrapersonal skills: self-management, time management, self-development, self-regulation, adaptability, executive functioning Assessing 21st Century Skills provides an integrated summary of the presentations and discussions from both parts of the third workshop.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designed to assist practitioners in developing interview procedures for their organizations, this work shows how competence-based human resource management techniques can be applied to employment interviews. Research has shown that the traditional interview does not predict employment success as well as the structured interview, while the structured interview is also the method of choice to ensure a fair and nondiscriminatory hiring process. Leading the practitioner through the three-step interview process—preparation, interviewing techniques, and evaluation of applicants—this guide provides sample questions, a case study, and forms to help the reader conduct successful structured interviews. Also included is a chapter on issues related to equal opportunity employment and a comprehensive review of the literature on structured interviewing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Assessment on college campuses has a sordid history, and it is fairly simple to find someone with a traumatic tale to tell. It is wise to respect that that reputation is deserved.” “How do you modify the inner workings and culture of a massive institution with minimal resources and even less authority (other than GE course approvals), and thousands and thousands of talented people busy doing other things?”“The road to departmental assessment can seem both dramatic and apocalyptic, especially if one’s departmental ‘centre cannot hold,’ and purpose falls apart. The Department of English and Linguistics is presently on this journey, slouching towards its own revelations of mission and fulfillment of purpose.” “I have become more optimistic about the potential value of the process, even if some of my initial skepticism remains. This skepticism, however, has been valuable, forcing me to think in more concrete ways about what I do in the classroom.”As these excerpts show, this is no conventional book about assessment. It presents the unvarnished first-person accounts of fourteen faculty and administrators about how they grappled, and engaged, with assessment and how – despite misgivings and an often-contentious process – they were able to gain the collaboration of their peers as the benefits for student learning became evident. This is a book for skeptical faculty, for those who have been tasked to spearhead their institution’s call to create a culture of assessment; and, on campuses where assessment has been widely accepted and implemented, for those who now need to ensure this commitment will endure. For all these audiences, this book offers valuable advice, strategies, models and ideas.

Book excerpt: This book introduces a new speculative design process for inclusive new product development (NPD). The authors offer Vision Enabled Design Thinking (VEDT), a human-centered technological design framework incorporating the use of Design Lens and Vision Concepting, as a way for the designer to ideate and reflect on product development concepts within a deeper sociocultural context. The authors incorporate project management concepts into the overall design process through the development of a new design process, "4-D Algorithm for New Product Development". Inclusion by Design: Future Thinking Approaches to New Product Development formalizes the use of speculative design as a means for more inclusive NPD and promotes management of the design process as a needed skill for future engineers and designers. It provides a novel design methodology of VEDT for engaging vision concepting, through the use of Design Lenses in engaging speculative design practices and offers an implementation framework to support the sustainable adoption and use of future design methods. The 4-D Algorithm for New Product Development promotes inclusivity in design while addressing practical aspects of managing the design process in today’s corporate business environment. Those involved with interactive product and technology design, new product development, design researchers and managers, engineers, as well as professionals and graduate students will find this book useful.
