Book excerpt: There is a great legend of the guardian angel who traveled across time and space for the human girl he loved, slaying those who would threaten her with a gleaming sword made of heavenly light. This is not that story.Jerome Hancock is Heidi Devine's guardian angel. Sort of. He's more of an angel trainee, in heaven's soul-rehabilitation program for wayward teens. And he's just about to get kicked out for having too many absences and for violating too many of the Ten Commandments for the Dead.Heidi, meanwhile, is a high school junior who dreams of being an artist, but has been drafted onto her basketball team because she's taller than many a grown man. For as long as she can remember, she's heard a voice in her head - one that sings Lynyrd Skynyrd, offers up bad advice, and yet is company during those hours she feels most alone. When the unthinkable happens, these two lost souls must figure out where they went wrong and whether they can make things right before Heidi's time is up and her soul is lost forever.Martha Brockenbrough's debut novel is hilarious, heartbreaking, and hopeful, with a sense of humor that's wicked as hell, and writing that's just heavenly.

An exegesis which takes the final canonical text seriously undertakes to understand the structure and theological intention of this unity. The papers collected here attempt to reveal significant structures which overarch the individual components. Particular emphasis is placed on the reconstruction of thematic threads which are created when individual prophets take up topics from their predecessors (e.g. Jehovah's Day, conversion, role of the peoples) and intensify them. The papers were written between 1999 and 2002 under the aegis of the Society of Biblical Literature's Working Group on The Formation of the Book of the Twelve.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1758, a Quaker tailor and sometime shopkeeper and school teacher stood up in a Quaker meeting and declared that the time had come for Friends to reject the practice of slavery. That man was John Woolman, and that moment was a significant step, among many, toward the abolition of slavery in the United States. Woolman's antislavery position was only one essential piece of his comprehensive theological vision for colonial American society. Drawing on Woolman's entire body of writing, Jon R. Kershner reveals that the theological and spiritual underpinnings of Woolman's alternative vision for the British Atlantic world were nothing less than a direct, spiritual christocracy on earth, what Woolman referred to as "the Government of Christ." Kershner argues that Woolman's theology is best understood as apocalyptic-centered on a supernatural revelation of Christ's immediate presence governing all aspects of human affairs, and envisaging the impending victory of God's reign over apostasy. John Woolman and the Government of Christ explores the theological reasoning behind Woolman's critique of the burgeoning trans-Atlantic economy, slavery, and British imperial conflicts, and fundamentally reinterprets 18th-century Quakerism by demonstrating the continuing influence of early Quaker apocalypticism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the book of Acts divine involvement is everywhere. From the beginning God is responsible for promised action, including the geographic expansion--"in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth" (1:7)--referenced in Jesus' response to the disciples, clearly related to Luke's purpose in writing the book. Geographic expansion, however, is only the second part of Jesus' reply. Is it possible that the first half of Jesus' reply--"It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority"--has even greater bearing on the actions that follow and on Luke's purpose? Is the Father setting times and seasons related to the kingdom's establishment? Does this phrase explain the conspicuous divine involvement throughout the plot? In Restoring the Kingdom, Michael Salmeier answers these questions in the affirmative by exploring Luke's characterization of God in three strands: God as the King who establishes and restores Israel's king, who establishes his people, and who directs events. This unfolds Luke's purpose in assuring the reader concerning the events that have taken place, helping to more fully illuminate Luke's theology concerning God and his kingdom.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A pioneering examination of the impact of new communications technologies and media practices on the religious life of American Jewry Engaging media has been an ongoing issue for American Jews, as it has been for other religious communities in the United States, for several generations. Shandler’s examples range from early recordings of cantorial music to Hasidic outreach on the Internet. In between he explores mid-twentieth-century ecumenical radio and television broadcasting, video documentation of life cycle rituals, museum displays and tourist practices as means for engaging the Holocaust as a moral touchstone, and the role of mass-produced material culture in Jews’ responses to the American celebration of Christmas. Shandler argues that the impact of these and other media on American Judaism is varied and extensive: they have challenged the role of clergy and transformed the nature of ritual; facilitated innovations in religious practice and scholarship, as well as efforts to maintain traditional observance and teachings; created venues for outreach, both to enhance relationships with non-Jewish neighbors and to promote greater religiosity among Jews; even redefined the notion of what might constitute a Jewish religious community or spiritual experience. As Jews, God, and Videotape demonstrates, American Jews’ experiences are emblematic of how religious communities’ engagements with new media have become central to defining religiosity in the modern age.

It seems that our church is bent upon living up to H. Richard Niebuhr's caricature of liberal Protestantism: "A God without wrath brought men without sin into a kingdom without judgment through the ministrations of a Christ without a cross." The book is meant to remedy this silence regarding God's judgment. It demonstrates the pervasiveness of the judgment of God in both Old and New Testaments. Not only do we find the act of judgment in every era, but judgment is a necessary stage in God's saving work. Moreover, the illuminating power of the concept is confirmed by common human experience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few concepts evoke the twentieth century’s record of war, genocide, repression, and extremism more powerfully than the idea of totalitarianism. Today, studies of the subject are usually confined to discussions of Europe’s collapse in World War II or to comparisons between the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany. In Race and the Totalitarian Century, Vaughn Rasberry parts ways with both proponents and detractors of these normative conceptions in order to tell the strikingly different story of how black American writers manipulated the geopolitical rhetoric of their time. During World War II and the Cold War, the United States government conscripted African Americans into the fight against Nazism and Stalinism. An array of black writers, however, deflected the appeals of liberalism and its antitotalitarian propaganda in the service of decolonization. Richard Wright, W. E. B. Du Bois, Shirley Graham, C. L. R. James, John A. Williams, and others remained skeptical that totalitarian servitude and democratic liberty stood in stark opposition. Their skepticism allowed them to formulate an independent perspective that reimagined the antifascist, anticommunist narrative through the lens of racial injustice, with the United States as a tyrannical force in the Third World but also as an ironic agent of Asian and African independence. Bringing a new interpretation to events such as the Bandung Conference of 1955 and the Suez Canal Crisis of 1956, Rasberry’s bird’s-eye view of black culture and politics offers an alternative history of the totalitarian century.

Book excerpt: The central theme of this book is that it's not enough to invoke omnipotence and omniscience as answers to the questions of God’s ability to create and causally affect the world (i.e., perform miracles) and human beings (i.e., to cause mystical experiences) and, conversely, God’s ability to perceive, or otherwise know about the world. Rather, it is incumbent upon theists to explain just how a personal, immaterial being such as God could cause mundane events, could institute (and sometimes circumvent) laws of nature, could be causally affected by the world (as in perception), and the like. That requires examining current thinking (which is diverse) about the very nature of causation, laws of nature, and agency, all of which Fales endeavors to do in this study.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the beginning, you will discover where one's soul simply returns to its original spiritual self, laid to rest in a dormant state within our Father's spiritual world since the beginning of mankind, simply in wait for Judgment Day. Where once no one was found worthy of eternal life with the father and the basis behind the creation of his only begotten son, Emanuel. For those waiting on what many believe to be that one clear sign, for many shall come in my name and shall deceive even the elect if possible, will find their neighbors themselves may very well fit the bill. For false prophets have been around since denominations themselves. I believe you will find where mankind not only helped in their creation but through their own blind ignorance continuously support the same which will lead them all to hell's fiery damnation. All will as well find that God does not lie, play games with lives, change with times simply because mankind would so will, nor as so science would have all believe, procrastinate. Does not the Father himself so state through scripture, "Will make short order of the earth," as we understand it to be? You will as well discover, all prayers are not heard. Those in particular with innocent blood on their hands will not be heard. There can be no innocents greater than those the unborn. You will as well find prayer without works, sincerity, and in more cases than not, repentance itself may very well be a requirement before one can be heard. Since Eve herself, women have played no greater role in the outcome of mankind than she has since World War Two. You will find in revelations where mankind will be tried and tested for ten days. Adam and Eve's lives themselves along with scripture dictates the time comparison given by the Father will give all knowledge and understanding concerning such. Even to the point of understanding, the first seven days as well the age of this world. Read how weather-related events bring about such worldwide disaster that purified water and food become more valuable than gold itself. With cannibalism becoming the norm in many areas of the world. With immorality running rampant throughout the Great Babylon, should it really come as a surprise who she really is? One who would make Sodom and Gomorrah look more like a godsend than evil. If the only knowledge one received from these readings is the fact that it is not Satan one need worry about but the heavenly Father himself. For only God has the ability to destroy body and soul, then my goal here has been accomplished. MAY GOD FORGIVE ALL. Amen.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A gentle guide for helping readers “over a certain age” discover their best life by finding the right-sized home in the best location. Moving is no fun. Neither is getting rid of stuff. And both jobs get harder as we get older. So, when those over a certain age — say, in the last third of life — are looking to downsize and move all at the same time, many will conclude, “I’ll just stay put, thank you very much.” It’s not just the acquired possessions holding them back, but also the intangibles. Their memories, their family history, their identities are all in jeopardy, they think. And yet, that reluctance to lighten up, let go, and move on is commonly all that stands between them and a better life. Rightsize Today to Create Your Best Life Tomorrow will help this group of root-bound home dwellers cross the bridge between stuck in the past and a lighter, better future. It will encourage them to embrace the fact that now, when they’re no longer tethered to a school system or to a job they need to be near, is their chance to live where they want to live. Every section contains checklists: some soul-searching (should you or shouldn’t you move?), some practical (what every kitchen must have), and some logistical (where’s your happy place?), to help readers on their journey. Included are enlightening profiles of those who proactively changed their housing in the last third of their life. Whether they moved to a smaller place, remodeled their existing home, or even moved to a larger home, which one third do; whether they moved to a new city, to a senior community, or to a new home in the same neighborhood, they all reimagined their lives, re-evaluated their belongings and made a move toward a better and possibly their best life yet. To live your best life now requires an honest appraisal of who you are and who you’re becoming, where you are in your life and where you’re going or want to go. This book is designed to help those who are stuck explore what’s holding them back, and provide them with the insights, experiences, and courage to move forward.

Uniquely different from other books on the subject, this work not only captures the harrowing event as it happened, but also reveals an unforgettable documentation of pain, defeat, triumph and redemption as it chronicles not only her own recovery process, but that of a community as well - through the eyes of an actual witness.

Book excerpt: This collection brings together top scholars to discuss the significance of violence from a global perspective and the intersections between the global structures of violence and more localized and intimate forms of violence. Activists and academics consider questions such as; are there situations in which violence should be politically supported? Are non-violent or anti-war movements in the US able to effectively respond to violence? Do we need to rethink our understanding of both 'religion' and 'secularism' in light of the current world situation? Have new paradigms been developed in response to violence? The essays in this collection offer inclusive analysis of particular situations and creative alternatives to the omnipresence of violence.

Book excerpt: The Omnidoxy is the founding treatise of the Astronist religion and was solely authored by the philosopher and religious founder, Cometan. Partitioned into twelve disquisitions, each of which are further divided into hundreds of discourses, which are themselves titled by those which are known as rubrals, The Omnidoxy has been codified according to a unique writing structure known as insentence. The Omnidoxy not only forms the foundations of Astronism, but it remains the primary modern contributor and the book that ignited the establishment of the Astronic tradition of religion which encompasses the philosophy of Astronism. Introducing brand new philosophical concepts such as cosmocentricity, reascensionism, transcensionism, and sentientism amongst many others, The Omnidoxy remains the principal signifier of a new era in philosophy. The Omnidoxy births hundreds of new belief orientations, schools of thought, neologisms, disciplines of study, theories, and concepts which, when combined and considered collectively, have formed the basis of Astronism. The authorship of The Omnidoxy rests with the single individual philosopher, Cometan who began writing The Omnidoxy at the age of seventeen driven by what he terms as personal inspiration. The historical origination of The Omnidoxy rests in its authorship by Brandon Taylorian during early 21st century England, specifically in the northern county of Lancashire. Like in all textual criticism, the timing and location of the codification of The Omnidoxy is integral to understanding why and how it was written, especially by considering the influential factors impacting Taylorian during his construction of the text, particularly the cultural, political, religious, and social contexts of Taylorian's personal life and of wider society at the time. This forms an important branch of study within omnidoxicology known as omnidoxical criticism, or omnidoxical exegesis in which scholars study and investigate The Omnidoxy in order to discern conclusive judgements inspired by how, where, why, by whom, for whom, and in what circumstances The Omnidoxy was written.

Book excerpt: In this life-changing book, Dr. Francis Myles introduces the reader to one of the most powerful spiritual technologies in all of creation. God instituted this technology to govern the spiritual, social and nancial heirs of Kingdom citizens during their pilgrimage here on earth. At the heart of all informed spiritual or scientific research is a body of questions that fuel the whole investigation. In the spirit of informed investigation, this book will seek to answer the following questions... Why are questions of regret so universal and common to the human experience? Is there a diabolical and calculated conspiracy behind many of the tears of regret that are common to the human experience? If God is good and all-powerful, why does He allow the evil and the pain of regret to be visited upon innocent people? Why do most people blame God for the pain in their lives that is a direct consequence of their actions? Why are these stories of disaster and regret concentrated in the Marketplace? Why do Kingdom entrepreneurs lose millions of dollars in bad business deals? Is there a "fail-proof" technology for "intercepting" much of the evil that is visited upon humans before it actually happens? This book also contains cases studies from the Bible and present day people that are designed to illustrate the dire need for a "fail-proof spiritual technology" for "intercepting" demonically engineered diabolical plans and ploys to inject suffering, loss and injury in the human experience; especially in the Marketplace.
