Book excerpt: Diver Mind Mania is a philosophical treatise covering various areas such as metaphysics, theology, political philosophy, and sport as a unique social institution. The text is highly existentialist in nature and uses a discursive format to convey the mania inside the mind of a former champion springboard diver. The author is African-American and juxtaposes these cultural experiences with elitist motifs that few people outside of the majority ever encounter. His collection of poetry and short stories objectively correlates a glimpse inside of a Yale University student's mind.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It all started when I was about fifteen years old. I was playing for the Amateur Softball Association, or Junior Olympic Softball. I was a standout pitcher, throwing the ball about sixty-five miles an hour. I loved softball; it was my sport, and it was my passion. But something was taking over my body, my brain, and my soul. I wasnt in control anymore. I used to throw no-hitters, strike batters out, and be proud of myself. But a switch went off in my brain. I was hearing voices; they were telling me to do certain things. I was paranoid, and it affected my pitching. My dad could no longer sit anywhere near where I was pitching because I could see his eyeballs. Those eyeballs were following me and distracting me, so he had to sit behind the outfield fence. I could hear what the batters were thinking, and I could hear what everyone in the stands where thinking. It ruined my career. The sad part about it was that nobody helped me. How could they have helped me? I never told anybody because I was so afraid. Was this normal? I sometimes think it started even earlier, maybe even as young as six years old. The voices and paranoia were so intense; sometimes I just wanted to end my life. Why did my parents not notice this? Why didnt anybody notice this? I kept it all to myself and dealt with it myself.

Book excerpt: "There are galaxies within the human mind, and madness wants to risk everything for the daring flight, reckless and beautiful and crazed. Everyone knows Icarus fell. But I love him for the fact that he dared to fly. Mania unfurls the invitation to fly too high, too near the sun..." Tristimania is a stark and lyrical account of the psyche in crisis. It tells the story of a devastating year–long episode of manic depression, culminating in a long solo pilgrimage across Spain. The book is rare in recording the experience of mania and shows how the condition is at once terrifying and also profoundly creative, both tricking and treating the psyche. In exploring its literary influence, Griffiths looks at Shakespeare's work, and examines the Trickster role, tracing its mercuriality through the character of Mercury. An intimate, raw journey, the book illuminates something of the universal human spirit.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diving technique is frequently discussed in merely physical terms; it is as if when we enter the water, we leave our mental faculties behind on terra firma. A diving instructor of many years standing, Monika Rahimi concentrates on the natural breathing technique required and how to overcome being afflicted by the anxieties around diving. Yet she expands upon them with the understanding that our mental activity feeds directly into our physical behaviour - and often vice versa - which can be intensified when under water, an environment that never fails to assault and surprise our senses. Ultimately, this guide will be as valuable to the novice who has never swum deeper than the bottom of their local pool as it will be to a fearless diver of teaching standard, for in helping the latter recall the fears and worries of the newcomer, they will be all the better equipped to help them overcome such things - both mentally and physically. Monika Rahimi started diving in 1975. In 1977 she took part in an assistant diving instructor course in Spain (Costa Brava). She became a diving instructor in 1979. Since then she has worked as an instructor and base leader in Sudan, the Maldives, the Philippines, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Bali and Tonga. She has also organised special diving trips in North, Central and South America and Indonesia. She now has over 14,000 dives under her belt.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book seeks to underscore the need for scientific approaches to first understanding and then managing tourist interactions with marine wildlife. It draws upon the work of leading natural and social scientists whose work serves the interests of sustainable wildlife-based marine tourism. Thus from within the natural science disciplines of marine biology, environmental science, behavioural ecology, conservation biology, and wildlife management come chapters that provide insights into the effects of human disturbance on marine wildlife, the impacts that tourists may have upon wild animals, and the management approaches to mitigating impacts that may in the long term be biologically significant. Equally from the social science disciplines of geography, sociology, management and social anthropology are drawn chapters that explore demand for marine wildlife experiences, the benefits that visitors derive from their experiences, ethical and legislative contexts, and management issues that arise when tourists interact with populations of wild animals in coastal and marine environments.

He experienced 17 years of severe sporadic manic episodes even with medications. With his conflicting physical exercises, he carefully and briefly extends his mind to emotional limits to release trauma energy from the brain. His facial meditation practices reduce mental energy and calms the mind and body. Briefly extending the brain and mind to limits heals the brain and mind and maintains control at expanded emotional limits. He has healed his disorder with conflicting physical exercises at mental limits. The subconscious mind learns to heal itself when briefly experiencing mental limits. Athletes extend minds and bodies to limits to be all they can be. He has practiced conflicting psychiatric exercises for 28 years with medications – One Bipolar Cure! Bipolar disorder is caused by stress beyond ability to cope with feelings of no way out. Normal everyday interactions and coping skills are overridden by high-energy emotional survival thinking. Survival thoughts override reasoning with others. The manic mind goes out of control. In the author’s first manic episode, he had a need to learn of God’s origin. His imaginary manic model explains God’s origin. While working on his first healing book, he received a traumatic inner voice: “Don’t Leave God Out.” His writing became spiritual. Jesus and God are important in his healing and beliefs

Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • A deeply powerful memoir about bipolar illness that has both transformed and saved lives—with a new preface by the author. Dr. Jamison is one of the foremost authorities on manic-depressive (bipolar) illness; she has also experienced it firsthand. For even while she was pursuing her career in academic medicine, Jamison found herself succumbing to the same exhilarating highs and catastrophic depressions that afflicted many of her patients, as her disorder launched her into ruinous spending sprees, episodes of violence, and an attempted suicide. Here Jamison examines bipolar illness from the dual perspectives of the healer and the healed, revealing both its terrors and the cruel allure that at times prompted her to resist taking medication.

Book excerpt: As seen on "CBS This Morning" Worldwide, depression will be the single biggest cause of disability in the next twenty years. But treatment for it has not changed much in the last three decades. In the world of psychiatry, time has apparently stood still...until now with Edward Bullmore's The Inflamed Mind: A Radical New Approach to Depression. A Sunday Times (London) Top Ten Bestseller In this game-changing book, University of Cambridge professor of psychiatry Edward Bullmore reveals the breakthrough new science on the link between depression and inflammation of the body and brain. He explains how and why we now know that mental disorders can have their root cause in the immune system, and outlines a future revolution in which treatments could be specifically targeted to break the vicious cycles of stress, inflammation, and depression. The Inflamed Mind goes far beyond the clinic and the lab, representing a whole new way of looking at how mind, brain, and body all work together in a sometimes misguided effort to help us survive in a hostile world. It offers insights into how we could start getting to grips with depression and other mental disorders much more effectively in the future.
