Book excerpt: This research examined disturbance processes and forest dynamics in two old-growth Fagus sylvatica - Abies alba forests in the Dinaric mountains. To do this, a combination of method was used, including direct observations of recent windthrow events, sampling of tree fall gaps, and historical reconstruction of disturbancies using dendroecological tehniques. In the Peckaforest reserve in Slovenia, two recent windstorm events caused substantial damage to the canopy, resulting in mortality, and created gaps upto 1500 m2. Furthermore, dendroecological evidence in the same reserve suggests that periodic storms damaged the forest in the past. The pattern of canopy damage in these events was also found to have an important influence on regeneration patterns. In the Perucica forest reserve in Bosnia and Herzegovina, large canopy gaps up to 6000 m2 in size with numerous windthrown gap makers also indicate the occurence of intermediate severity windstorm disturbance. Thus, the results suggest that both small-scale gaps as well as periodic formation of larger openings from wind disturbance play an important role in the dynamics of these forests. These findings challenge the traditional view of central European forest dynamics, which suggests that continuous, endogenous tree mortality processes, causing small canopy gaps, drive forest dynamics.

Book excerpt: This study was conducted in Dinaric mixed mountain old-growth (OG) forests Janj and Lom and adjacent managed stands on the same site (Piceo-Abieti-Fagetum illyricum), which were managed with a selection (plenter) system for more than a century. The following attributes were examined: light climate, ground vegetation, regeneration, tree density, dbh distribution shapes, tree species composition, mean diameter, basal area (BA), growing stock (GS) and coarse woody debris (CWD). As expected, taller and larger trees, higher BA, higher share of senescent phase and more CWD were found in OG forests. Regeneration process in OG forests was characterized by lower levels and variability of light, lover ground vegetation coverage and vascular plant diversity, and the species composition was more dominated by beech. Beech seedling density indicated positive relation to beech BA, while all regeneration stages of fir showed negative relation with fir BA. Beech was significantly more represented in OG forests also in the middlestory. Dbh distributions in both managed and OG forests had shapes that indicate a demographic equilibrium, despite high values of GS. Most frequent species specific shapes indicated demographic stability or even progression of beech, and imbalance or regression of conifers. Despite significant shares of spruce and fir in the upperstory, their regeneration and small trees were given low chances to replace mature trees in OG forests in the near future. Similarly to the natural disturbance pattern in OG forests Janj and Lom, single tree selection in managed forests performed only slightly better regarding recruitment of spruce and maple into the stand middlestory. The long-term comparison of OG forest structure indicated decline of conifers (especially spruce). However, comparison of recent data in managed and OG forests indicated that silvicultural activities may hold back long-term conifer decline since managed forests exhibited greater compositional stability.

Book excerpt: Understanding the patterns of past disturbance allows further insight into the composition, structure, and function of today’s forests. Disturbance history may also influence how forests will react to future stresses and disturbances. The disturbance histories of the mixed-oak forests at the Coweeta Hydrologic Laboratory (a 2,185 ha long-term research site with some history of harvesting) and the Joyce Kilmer Wilderness (a 6,805 ha old-growth forest with no known harvesting) located in southwestern North Carolina were studied using dendroecology. Dendroecology uses increment cores to determine tree ages and patterns of radial growth. In addition to evaluating the history of these two areas to better understand disturbance dynamic in the southern Appalachians, we compared the radial growth patterns of old-growth trees at Joyce Kilmer to remnant old-growth trees at Coweeta to determine if the trees have similar responses to disturbances throughout time. We found average decadal disturbance rates (calculated as percent of plot area affected per decade back to the mid-1700s) at Coweeta and Joyce Kilmer (8.7% to 18.3%) were similar to rates common in eastern temperate forests (5% to 20%). The general disturbance history is one of low, but fluctuating, rates, indicating the importance of small canopy gaps in these forests. Among the typically low rates of disturbance present in all stands are occasional, and noticeably higher, peaks of disturbance. The dominating peak in disturbance occurred across all stands in the 1920s and 1930s, likely attributable to American chestnut (Castanea dentata (Marshall) Borkh.) mortality due to the chestnut blight. Logging created pulses of disturbance in the 1900s, 1910s, and 1920s. Natural disturbances, such as windthrow from hurricanes, drought, insect outbreaks, and ice storms likely contributed to both the peaks in disturbance across the stands (1840s and 1960s) as well as localized pulses unique to single stands. Disturbance rates and patterns over time were not random with respect to species composition. The more closely related stands were in species composition, the more similar they were in disturbance history. This is likely due to some of the disturbances being specific to one or a few species. However, despite stands similar in species composition also being similar in elevation and slope, disturbance patterns were not influenced by elevation or slope. The early harvests at Coweeta were most likely selective, favoring some trees over others on the basis of species, size, or form. Thus, the remaining trees from that era were biased, making it unclear as to whether their growth patterns were representative of the pre-harvest disturbance history. Thus, we compared old remnant trees at Coweeta to old-growth trees at Joyce Kilmer, asking if radial growth patterns from old trees surviving harvesting were comparable to those of trees growing in the same time period but free from harvesting. We found similar patterns in radial growth as well as similar disturbance histories, indicating that using remnant trees left behind after harvesting to determine disturbance histories is plausible, at least in these stands

Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was to quantify forest disturbance processes and evaluate the influence of these processes on secondary hardwood forest communities on a section of the Cumberland Plateau in Tennessee. The specific objectives of this study were to: (1) reconstruct the disturbance history of a secondary hardwood forest using species composition, stand structure, tree-ring data, and soil charcoal analyses, (2) quantify canopy gap formation mechanisms, (3) document canopy gap characteristics, and (4) determine the forest response to small-scale disturbance events. This information is useful to understand the importance of localized disturbances on stand development and forest successional patterns. With the exception of one stand-wide disturbance in the early 1980s, the disturbance regime of the forest was characterized by localized, asynchronous events that occurred at variable spatial and temporal scales. Gap-scale disturbance events became frequent after about 40 years of forest development. The presence of soil charcoal indicated that fire had occurred in the Pogue Creek Natural Area in the past, but species composition and a lack of fire-scarred trees indicated that fire had not occurred during the development of the current stand. The majority of canopy gaps were caused by treefall (either windthrow or basal-shear) and half of all gaps were caused by the death of a Quercus individual. Gap ages ranged from 1 to 17 years with a mean of 7 years. Seasonality of death could be accurately determined for 17 gap makers and all but one of these trees died during the growing season. Strong wind associated with convective storms is the most probable disturbance agent in the forest. The fraction of land area in expanded gaps and true canopy gaps was 15% and 6%, respectively. The amount of land area in canopy gaps was highest for younger gaps and generally decreased with increased gap age. Most expanded and true canopy gaps had elliptical shapes and the majority of gaps were oriented perpendicular to slope contours. Significant positive relationships were documented between expanded gap size and the density of saplings, trees, and total stems. Only weak relationships existed between stem diversity and expanded gap size. Most of the canopy gaps documented were projected to close by lateral crown expansion rather than height growth of subcanopy individuals, but gaps still provided a means for understory trees to recruit to larger size classes. Over half of all trees located in true canopy gaps with intermediate crown classifications were Acer saccharum, A. rubrum, or Liriodendron tulipifera. Because the gaps documented were relatively small and close by lateral branch growth of perimeter trees, the most shade-tolerant A. saccharum has the greatest probability of becoming dominant in the canopy under the current disturbance regime. This study indicated that gap-scale disturbance processes have an influence on stand development and successional patterns of secondary hardwood forests in the absence of large-scale events.

Coarse woody debris (CWD, tree remains greater than or equal to 20cm in diameter), which makes up 20% of the aboveground forest biomass, can be an important indicator of historical forest disturbance events and is an important variable for establishing carbon storage baselines. Eighty plots (0.04 ha) located in old-growth temperate deciduous forest within Lilley Cornett Woods Ecological Research Station (LCW), southeastern KY, USA, were used to assess spatial and temporal dynamics in CWD. These plots were sampled for CWD three times (1989, 1999, and 2012) using identical methods and all samples were identified to species, assigned to a decomposition class, and measured in length and width to estimate volume and sample biomass. We found an increasing trend in CWD biomass that was both evenly-distributed across species and exhibited a distinct spatial pattern. The increasing deposition and spatial relationship were explained by recent disturbance events, as well as environmental variables. Because less than 1% of northeastern forests are old growth and climate change alters forest carbon balance, this study satisfies a current need for ongoing documentation of old-growth forests.

It explores how these concepts can be applied in various forest biomes of the world with their different ecological, economic and social settings, and history. Individual chapters stress different elements of these concepts based on the specific setting and expertise of the authors. Regions and authors have been selected to cover a diversity of viewpoints and emphases, from silviculture and natural forests to forest restoration, and from boreal to tropical forests. The chapters show that there is no single generally applicable approach to forest management that applies to all settings. The first set of chapters provides a global overview of how complexity, CAS and resilience theory can benefit researchers who study forest ecosystems. A second set of chapters provides guidance for managers in understanding how these concepts can help them to facilitate forest ecosystem change and renewal (adapt or self-organize) in the face of global change while still delivering the goods and services desired by humans. The book takes a broad approach by covering a variety of forest biomes and the full range of management goals from timber production to forest restoration to promote the maintenance of biodiversity, quality of water, or carbon storage.
